STEALS OF THE MONTH

Palma Carola ‘Spinsanti’ Malbec Reserva 2014

Luyan de Cuyo, Argentina

Cash Price $9.99

Spinsanti is a label that offers value wine by Pulenta Estates and Paul Hobbs.  The wine is firm, fruity and approachable.  Plum, spice, black cherry show into medium acids and tannins. Succelent! James Score: 89 Points

Liberation de Paris Rose 2015

Vin de Pays, France

Cash Price $9.99

I just had lunch with Jean Francois Bonnete, owner of this label, and was really pleased with this dry Rose.  Fifth generation Burgundy growers.  Zesty wild berries, cherry and strawberry with medium acids and  refreshing finish.  James Score: 89 Points

Ken Forrester ‘Petit’ Chenin Blanc 2015

Western Cape, South Africa

Cash Price $9.99

This wine is one of my favorite white wines under $10 period.  Un-oaked and deliciously refreshing, this wine offers medium acidity with pears, melon drop, dew that sinks into lychee and just a whiff of grapefruit.  Yummy!  James Score: 90 Points

Thank You,

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF APRIL 2017 AND BORDEAUX 101 CLASS

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

What a beautiful month March turned out to be.  I hope we have more wonderful weather to follow in April.  I have picked a medley of wines for you to chose from that will ease your Easter family meal pairing anxiety as well as some rocking picks that I have had the joy to partake of.  Please join me for my next Wine Tasting and Pairing: Bordeaux 101, hosted at Pallotta’s Italian Grill in the Woodlands.  Please see the previous blog for instructions.  RSVP to jamesbarlow25@hotmail.com.  Enjoy!

Kapcsandy ‘Endre’ Red Blend 2009

Napa Valley, California

Usually Cash Price $74.99  but on sale for a limited time

Cash Price $54.97 (only 1 case left!)

I recently re-tasted after I had bought this vintage heavily.  I was giddy to find it drinking to its maximum potential right now.  I was wowed by the complexity of this Bordeaux style blend.  Every vintage has beautiful integrity with subtle, intricate differences that showed the stylistic growing seasons of the wines.  Endre is a Cabernet, Merlot blend that is built to please, but will become even more gorgeous with cellar aging.  This wine exudes brilliance of meticulous wine making by Lou Kapcsandy with the help of Denis Malbec of 1st Growth Chateau Latour fame.  Flavors of black currant and black cherry lay in a bed of red flowers that slowly melds into dark mocha and milk chocolate.  Divine notes of rustic earth and terrior slither gracefully through dried leather and tobacco with a core of toasted vanilla and spices that place perfectly on the palate for an immensely long time.  The acids are booming with amazingly integrated tannins that lick the outer palate and give a focused precision to the wine.  This wine is an absolutely stellar wine which shows that California is capable of producing age-worthy Bordeaux style wines.  James Score: 95 Points

Vincent Latour ‘Clos Des Magny’ Chardonnay 2014

Meursault, France

Cash Price $49.99

I just re-tasted Magny this weekend and gave it a higher score than last tasted.  Vincent Latour is new to our portfolio, focusing on high quality Chardonnay from one of the more iconic regions on Earth to produce the grape.  The wine is 100% Chardonnay from the area of Clos Des Magny, nestled at the foot of the town of Meursault.  Latour is aged on its lees for 12 months.  This gorgeous Chardonnay exudes flavors of lime, honeysuckle and green apples.  The mid palate is rich and complex with subtle hints of vanilla, cedar, and hazelnuts with medium plus acidity.  The finish is chalked full of minerality, fresh white flowers, and peach.  This is a Chardonnay lover delight!  James Score: 96 Points

Chateau Daugay Red Blend 2014

St. Emilion, France

Cash Price $28.39

I visited the quaint little Chateau named Daugay last year while touring through Bordeaux.  We had just passed the famed Chateau Angelus, some of the most prized vineyards in all of Bordeaux, and stopped on a hill overlooking the vines of Angelus.  Lo and behold, we were in the vineyards of Daugay.  It turns out that Angelus is a part owner of this old 14 acre estate that is dedicated to producing exemplary Merlot based wines.  This wine is 70% Merlot & 30% Cabernet.  Flavors of ripe wild red berries and cherry envelope the palate with integrated licks of vanilla bean, cream, and currant.  The mid palate shows off polished tannins and elegant acids that give this wine a great age ability. The finish offers hints of cedar, cinnamon, and blooming roses.  Beautiful wine.  James Score: 93 Points

Ulrich Langguth ‘GG’ Dry Riesling 2015

Mosel, Germany

Cash Price $26.29

Dry Riesling done well can be absolutely haunting.  These grapes were grown on the very slate strewn, deep soils of Goldtropfchen, which is considered some of the finest vineyard sites in all of Germany.  Most wines from this area are slightly sweet, but this wine is deliciously dry.  Amazing flavors of crisp green apple and pear tickle into medium plus acidity.  The mid palate offers notes of beeswax and a stony minerality that sinks into the core.  The finish is flush with wild meadow and white flowers that waft sensuously throughout the palate.  The ‘GG’ wines of the region are considered of the utmost quality and some of the finest in all the land.  It is rare to get this quality at such a great price point.  James Score: 94 Points

Pascal Lachoux Pinot Noir 2012

Bourgogne, France

Cash Price $26.59

The winery was formerly called Arnoux-Lachaux, but owner Pascal Lachaux, who has been producing the wine for twenty years, recently decided to put his final stamp on the wine with the transition to his name.  I have had this wine several times over the past couple of years and have been consistently impressed with its vibrancy and elegance in the glass.  He calls this wine Pinot Fin instead of Pinot Noir because this strain of Pinot Noir is of particularly high quality, so he wants to make sure the consumer understands its purity of character.  Flavors of dark cherry and raspberry pop into the palate with medium plus acids and soft, plush tannins.  The mid palate offers light earthy tones with hints of rhubarb and pepper.  The finish is flavorful, yet elegant with just enough curves to give the body character.  James Score: 90 Points

Catena ‘La Consulta’ Malbec 2014

Mendoza, Argentina

Cash Price $24.89

I recently hosted a Chile vs. Argentina tasting.  I poured this wine and although Argentina lost the overall war, they completely won a battle with La Consutla.  Everyone was amazed at the silky complexity in the glass.  Catena is one of the highest quality producers in all of Mendoza.  They are known for making Malbec from higher elevation and having making wine in Mendoza since 1902.  Laura Catena is now at the helm of the winery and has continued the tradition of quality wines with wine maker Alejandro Vigil.  This wine is 100% Malbec produced at an elevation of 3,600 feet. The elevation gives the wine a concentration that can be lost at lower elevations.  Flavors of dark raspberry and black cherry bounce playfully through medium tannins and acids.  Notes of black pepper and pot pourri spices are noticed on the mid palate through the thickly concentrated blueberry and plum.  The finish offers hints of toasted nuts, caramel and vanilla bean with 12 months of French oak aging.  James Score: 92 Points

Bricco di Guazzi Gavi di Gavi 2015

Gavi, Italy

Cash Price $19.59

Bricco di Guazzi lies in the hills of Monferrato in the region of Piedmont.  Nebbiolo is king here for red wines, but the king of white is the grape, Cortese, used in the wines of Gavi.  Often overlooked, this style of wine shows more interesting flavors than most Pinot Grigios.  This 100% Cortese offers deliciously refreshing flavors of lemon lime citrus with zero oak.  Notes of melon and tinges of grapefruit zing through medium plus acidity and just a touch of wet stone.  The finish is clean and tantalizingly pure.  James Score: 89 Points

Le Monde Cabernet Franc 2013

Friuli Grave, Italy

Cash Price $17.89

The region of Friuli Grave offers some of the more terroir driven wines in all of Italy.  I have been consistently happy with the white wines offered from this winery, but had never tried the reds.  Most of you know that I am enamored with Cabernet Franc, so when this was offered I immediately went into wine geek mode.  It did not disappoint!  Light and elegant, yet with structure to hold, this wine is a great red to enjoy during the hot days of summer.  The wine offers flavors of bright strawberry and raspberry that waft into a core of medium plus acidity and a medley of curiously enticing spices.  Le Monde’s tannins never over step their boundaries, but in fact, enhance the acids and overall structure of the wine.  The finish offers whiffs of red roses and herbs without being encumbered by the heaviness of oak.  James Score: 90 Points

Ca’Momi Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $18.99

Ca’Momi is one Spec’s gem Cabernet’s for under $20.  This American winery with Italian roots produces excellent value wines across the board.  This 100% Cabernet is wonderfully complex with flavors of ripe plum and bing cherry.  The wine has been aged for 18 months in oak and it shows on the palate with a creamy vanilla core.  Notes of spice integrate through the balanced tannins and acids.  The finish offers plush hints of currant, cassis and toasted oak.  Chocolate mocha sits on the palate for a good long time.  James Score: 90 Points

Beppe Blue Prosecco N/V

Veneto, Italy

Cash Price $14.99

Beppe Blue has thrown down the gauntlet for deliciously refreshing every day bubbles for days that end with ‘Y’.  This wine is Glera based and meant to be fun and fresh.  Flavors of citrus and pear bounce gleefully through the palate with tinges of white flowers.  The finish offers just a tickle of tropical and stone fruits that leaves a pleasurably flavorful end to the party in your mouth.  James Score: 87 Points

Cantine di Ora ‘Amicone’ Red Blend 2013

Veneto, Italy

Cash Price $15.89

Have you ever tried Amarone?  If so, then you know how pricey those wines can get!  This little gem uses the same base grape, Corvina, but instead of being hung from the rafters like Amarone, these grapes are allowed to dry and ripen for longer amounts of time on the vine.  The wine is then fermented and aged in French oak for eight months.  The ensuing wine offers intensely ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and stewed plums that are enveloped by jammy hints of fig and dates.  The mid palate offers medium tannins and acids that give complexity to the delightful fruit bomb in the glass.  The finish shows hints of brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla.  James Score: 89 Points

Mourgues du Gres Red Blend 2012

Costieres de Nimes, France

Cash Price $13.99

The Rhone Valley is one of the best ‘value’ wine regions on earth. This Syrah/Grenache red blend is rock solid at a killer price point.  Located on the galet soils deposited by the Rhone River this wine shows excellent fruit, structure and minerality.  The wine is un-oaked and aged in concrete tanks for a year to offer maximum fruit and approachability.  Flavors of blackberry and bramble lead into sweet red berries.  The mid palate offers touches of garrigue and black pepper with medium tannins and acids.  The finish is lush and flavorful with silky fruit and hints of spice that lingers quite nicely.  James Score: 88 Points

Yalumba ‘Y series’ Viognier 2016

South Australia

Cash Price $9.99

This white is consistently one of my ‘go to’ inexpensive wines as the days begin to heat up.  The wine is a veritable fruit cocktail in the mouth.  Flavors of citrus are rounded out by guava and melon.  Hints of honeysuckle and fresh meadow flowers are layered with medium acids.  The wine sees no oak and explodes on the palate from start to finish.  James Score: 88 Points

Thank You,

James C. Barlow, CWE

STEALS OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH 2017

Vieux Manoir Red Blend 2015

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $9.99

The 2015’s are slowly starting to arrive from across the pond.  This vintage is one of the finest I have ever tasted.  A Merlot/Cabernet blend, Manoir is the perfect wine for days that end with ‘Y’.  Supple red fruits combine with medium body and a smooth, creamy finish.  James Score: 90 Points

Aquilo Chardonnay 2014

California

Cash Price $8.99

Soft and plush, this California Chardonnay offers tropical notes of pineapple and melon with easy acids and cream.  The finish offers touches of honey and buttered peaches.  James Score: 88 Points

Mia Tempranillo by Freixenet N/V

Spain

Cash Price $8.49

This 100% Tempranillo is fresh and fruity from start to finish.  Flavors of plum and red berries seep through soft tannins and acids.  Mia is perfectly suited for rodeo weather!  James Score: 87 Points

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF MARCH 2017

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Can you believe it is March already?!?  It seems like 2017 is blowing by.  I have had the pleasure of trying some rather eclectic wines lately that I will offer to you all.  I have had some interesting Chardonnay’s lately, so I thought I would pick three countries to write up and show you the unique differences in flavor profile from the same variety, but different terroir.  So, pick up all three and find which style you love the most.  I have also written up two Bichot Pinot Noir’s in the same price point, but from different regions in Burgundy the last two blogs to show you the unique differences in the wines from the same producer but different area.  Enjoy!

Kane ‘Moonset’ Red Blend 2014

Sonoma, California

Cash Price $29.99

John Kane is the founder and winemaker at JCK Wine Company.  He has spent over twenty years  learning, producing, and making wine with brilliant minds such as Kent Rosenblum and Jeff Cohn.  He has a certain penchant for making extremely flavorful Zinfandel.  He produces three wines, all based on America’s darling variety.  This 80% Zinfandel blend offers booming flavors of blueberry and black currant with medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate is quite lively with notes of black cherry, cola and silky vanilla.  The finish is plush and inviting with whiffs of spice with lavender and cinnamon.  James Score: 93 Points

Anthonij Rupert ‘Protea’ Reserve Red Blend 2009

Coastal Region, South Africa

Cash Price $26.99

I love the age ability of South African wines.  I recently re-tasted this wine and it is peaking right now!  The wine is a 50% Shiraz/46% Mataro/ 4% Viognier red blend that is rocking from start to finish.  Protea offers flavors of plum and fig that sink into integrated tannins and acids that have really given way to the dried fruits.  Notes of brown sugar and nutmeg waft easily through the mid palate with smidgeons of black pepper.  The finish is rich and textured with hints of vanilla bean, licorice, and cedar.  Get this one while it lasts!  James Score: 91 Points

Bellefleur de Haute Serre Sparkling Rose N/V

Vin de France

Cash Price $26.39

Ever had a sparkling Malbec? NO? Me neither till recently.  This fun and approachable bubbly has a fanciful nature, without being to pretentious.  The wine is produced by famed Cahors producer, Georges Vigouroux.  Deliciously clean and tight bubbles offer flavors of ripe bing cherries and wild strawberries with medium acidity.  The mid palate is extremely fresh with touches of red apples and freshly picked roses.  The finish is clean and tantalizing with hints of toasted biscuits and brioche.  James Score: 90 Points

Vincent Latour Chardonnay 2014

Bourgogne, France

Cash Price $19.94

The best expressions of Chardonnay, in my humble opinion, come from the tiny sliver region of Burgundy in eastern France. This is a relatively new producer to this market, but I must say that I am quite pleased with the entire portfolio. Granted, this producer does have Chardonnay that is priced $100 and more. This is their entry level Chardonnay….The gateway drug! Flavors of green apples and citrus blossom sing melodically into kisses of honeysuckle and pear. The mid palate offers whiffs of melon, mango, and roasted nuts with medium acidity. The finish offers touches of oak with a richness that balances the wine throughout. Pair this food with oysters, crawfish, of light fowl.  James Score: 90 Points

Block 227 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Paso Robles, California

Cash Price $19.94

I usually am pretty darn happy with Paso Robles Cabernets.  The climate gives them plenty of ripe fruit while the cost per ton of grapes hasn’t skyrocketed like it has in Napa Valley.  I think the best $20 and under Cabernet’s being produced in California are usually coming from this area.  The Block Series doesn’t swing and miss with their selections.  This wine is rock solid.  Block 227 is bursting with vibrant energy and fruit.  Flavors of blackberry and black cherry flow seamlessly through medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate is plush and silky with notes of currant and tobacco with whiffs of black pepper.  The finish is deliciously smooth with touches of vanilla, dark chocolate, and cream.  James Score: 90 Points.

Chateau D’Or Rose 2015

Cotes de Provence, France

Cash Price $19.94

In my honest opinion, Rose season is year round in Texas.  That said, I typically refrain from writing them up until March.  Well…its March 1st and I’m chomping at the bit to tell you about this Spectacularly Dry Rose.  The wine is a 50% Grenache/30% Syrah/20% Cinsault blend that is youthful and energetic from start to finish.  Flavors of wild strawberries and cranberry bounce into every crevice of your palate with medium plus acidity and light tannins.  Notes of apple skin and kisses of watermelon sink into the mid palate.  The finish is pure, clean and refreshing with cherry and wild flowers wafting throughout.  James Score: 90 Points

Albert Bichot Pinot Noir 2014

Savigny Les Beaune, France

Cash Price $24.99

Savigny Les Beaune is located north of Mercurey (last month’s write up) in the famed Cote D’Or region of Burgundy.  Beaune is famous for producing some of the finest Chardonnay on earth, but I have consistently found screamingly delicious Pinot Noir that often fly under the radar.  This 100% Pinot Noir offers freshly picked red cherries and pomegranate that lace into medium plus acidity and medium minus tannins.  The mid palate gives way to black raspberries and touches of cream.  The finish is light and flavorful with touches of subtle spice and wild berries.  James Score: 89 Points

Marchesi Biscardo ‘Ripasso’ Red Blend 2013

Valpolicella, Veneto

Cash Price $19.94

Biscardo’s baby Amarone is exquisite.  Biscardo is a 4th generation winemaker with a passion for wines from the Veneto.  The wine is 60% Corvina and passed over the lees of racked Amarone.  The ensuing wine offers flavors of Amarone, but without the high price tag because of its less labor intensive production.  Complex flavors of dark black plums and black cherry sinew through sleek tannins and acids with licks of black licorice, vanilla bean, and roasted figs.  James Score: 91 Points

Le Monde Chardonnay 2015

Friuli, Italy

Cash Price $16.39

Le Monde is located on some of the best soils for growing white varieties in all of Italy in the DOC region of Friuli Grave.  The area is known for the multitude of rocks that take in the heat during the day and slowly release it at night to allow the vines and grapes to continue their pursuit of ripeness.  This 100% Chardonnay is completely un-oaked and produced with the intention of being expressive without the lipstick of oak.  The wine was aged on its lees for six months, but completely done in stainless steel.  The ensuing wine offers ripe flavors of fleshy pears and tropical fruits that weave easily through medium acidity.  The mid palate offers touches of green apple and papaya with licks of lilac and honeydew.  The finish is lip-smacking with just a kiss of vanilla.  James Score: 90 Points

Malmont Red Blend 2015

Cotes du Rhone, France

Cash Price $18.99

Malmont (bad mountain) is a single vineyard located in the highly acclaimed region of Seguret.  Nicolas Haeni is the brain child behind the powerful wines from this label.  I often say that some of the world’s best priced wines come from the encompassing Cotes du Rhone AOC and this wine is exactly why I consistently say that.  Malmont is a 55% Grenache/45% Syrah blend that offers concentrated flavors of blackberries and garrigue flow smoothly into medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate offers a medley of spices with pepper being prevalent.  The finish is silky and long lasting with hints of violets and lavender flowing through tinges of stewed fruits.  James Score: 89 Points

Chateau Tours de Marchesseau Merlot 2013

Lalande de Pomerol, France

Cash Price $15.69

Marchesseau is a 80% Merlot/20% Cabernet Franc wine from one of the finest places on earth for producing quality Merlot.  This wine comes from the famous Jean-Louis Trocard stable.  I  am happy to see Merlot making a resurgence in the American market.  The movie ‘Sideways’ really hurt the sales of this noble variety.  This wine offers flavors plum and red cherries through integrated acids and tannins.  The mid palate shows hints of minerality with whiffs of iron and red clay infused with licks of subtle vanillin and cedar.  The finish is harmoniously balanced with smidgeons of creamy milk chocolate, leather and toasted oak.  James Score: 88 Points

Lockwood Chardonnay 2014

Monterey, California

Cash Price $10.99

I have really been impressed with the changes that the Boisset family made when they purchased Lockwood vineyards a couple of years ago.  They decided to give the wines a terroir driven flavor profile, which is unique in California. This wine is completely un oaked and aged in stainless steel tanks with lees aging.  Flavors of crisp green apple and citrus sinew easily into the palate with touches of pineapple and melon.  The mid palate displays medium acids with notes of hazelnuts.  The finish is clean and flavorful with hints of lemon cream pie and honeysuckle.  James Score: 87 Points

Laya Red Blend 2015

Almansa, Spain

Cash Price $9.49

Spanish Garnacha and red blends are RED HOT in the market right now!  The consumers have figured out that one can typically get astounding quality under $10 from Spain.  This 70% Garnacha/30% Monastrell blend is ready to drink from the first ‘pop’ of the cork.  Dark and inviting from the first sup, Laya offers blackberry and black cherry that lead into medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate offers a nice dollop of alcohol that is encompassed by blueberry, vanilla and cream.    The finish gives hints of licorice and espresso that begins to show jamminess the longer it is opened.  James Score: 91 Points

Thank You,

James C. Barlow, CWE

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF FEBRUARY 2017

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

February will be an interesting time this year with the Super Bowl headed to Houston.  I am also noticing that our economy is taking a turn for the better.  That said, I realize that tax season is right around the corner.  So, I have put together a medley of wines…..some for celebrating, a little for commiserating, and a few for the penny pinchers.  Enjoy!

DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR MY UPCOMING ‘BEST VALUE UNDER $25’ WINE TASTING AND PAIRING AT PALLOTTA’S ITALIAN GRILL ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND!

RSVP TO JAMESBARLOW25@HOTMAIL.COM

Chateau du Bligny Blanc de Blanc N/V

Champagne, France

Cash Price $49.99

Chateau Bligny is located in the Cote de Bars in the southern portion of Champagne.  The chateau has become known for producing all of the legal grapes of Champagne.  This Blanc de Blanc is 100% Chardonnay and bottled on the estate.  Crisp and linear, this wine shows elegant citrus flavors and pear with medium plus acidity.  The finish has a subtle richness with whiffs of brioche, white flowers and toasted nuts.  James Score: 92 Points

Block 1029 ‘Connor Lee Vineyard’ Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Columbia Valley, Washington

Cash Price $34.99

The Block Series has really hit its stride in the past couple of years.  I have been truly impressed with just about anything being released.  This is the 1st foray into Washington State for the Block Estates.  I am pleased to report that I like this wine every bit as much as some of the better California releases, if not more!  Rich flavors of blueberry and blackberry flow seamlessly through medium acids and medium plus tannins.  The mid palate offers touches of tobacco, graphite, and cigar box.  The finish is quite pleasing with hints of mocha and vanilla bean that is layered through cedar. Full-bodied and balanced.  Do Not Miss Out On This Limited Release!  James Score: 93 Points

Albert Bichot Pinot Noir 2014

Mercurey, France

Cash Price $24.99

100% Pinot Noir from Burgundy can turn into a rather pricey endeavor.  The region of Cote Chalonnaise is located in Burgundy, but just south of the Cote d’Or (where all the Grand Cru’s are).  Here one can find excellent value for spectacular expression of the purest area in the world to produce Pinot Noir.  The producers of this wine implement sustainable practices when producing this gem.  Bright flavors of freshly picked red cherries burst into the palate with tinges of wild red berries and minerality.  The mid palate offers medium plus acidity that hews gracefully into notes of plum and rose petals. The finish is full of candied red fruits that lay on velvety tannins. The wine is beautifully balanced and a true delight on the palate.  James Score: 90 Points

Shannon Ridge ‘Two Bud Block’ Zinfandel 2013

Lake County, California

Cash Price $19.94

I think some of the best priced wines in California are from this up and coming wine region.  Located North of Napa, the prices of grapes have not sky rocketed like they have in Napa Valley.  Shannon Ridge is one of my favorite price point wineries in California.  The 2013 vintage was spectacular in California with weather that allowed growers to push the envelope on ripeness which makes for jammy and juicy Zinfandels!  Flavors of roasted plums and figs explode on the palate with a healthy dollop of alcohol.  Notes of blackberry jam and stewed currants flow into a medley of spices.  The finish offers French and American oak aging flavors of vanilla, cinnamon and dark chocolate with whiffs of cedar.  James Score: 90 Points

Domaine du Courteillac 2010

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $18.29

The 2010’s are drinking wonderfully right now.  I am tickled every time I come across an inexpensive 2010 right now because I just know they are going to be OUTSTANDING!  This vintage has gone down as one of the best of the century.  Prices exploded, so it became hard to find value.  That said, you had to be a really bad grower to produce bad wine.  Anything under $20 is drinking exceedingly well….like this wine for instance!  Flavors of silky red currant and plum sink into eloquent acids and tannins.  Kisses of French oak weave melodically through the mid palate with smidgeons of hazelnuts and vanilla.  The finish is soft, yet firm with hints of spice.  Only 3 cases available!  James Score: 90 Points

Chenin de Mercues Blanc 2014

Cotes du Lot, France

Cash Price $16.99

This wine comes from the famed Cahors producer Georges Vigouroux.  Only red wines based on Malbec are allowed to be labeled Cahors, but he has produced an amazing Chenin Blanc under the Cotes du Lot IGP label.  As most of you know, I LOVE Chenin Blanc!  This wine offers delicious fruits of citrus and pear with whiffs of white flowers and beeswax.  The mid palate shows a pure intensity with medium plus acidity that is encompassed by licks of honeyed jasmine and ripe green apples.  The finish is beautifully integrated with hints of toasted nuts and crushed rocks.  James Score: 89 Points

Domaine de Montcy Red Blend 2015

Cheverny, France

Cash Price $16.99

I poured this wine at a tasting during the holidays and everyone was absolutely in love with this light and refreshing thriller.  Located in a fairly unknown area in the Loire Valley, this winery focuses on high quality whites and reds on soils of clay and limestone.  The wine is a blend of 50% Gamay, 45% Pinot Noir, and 5% Malbec.  I know….not typically grapes you see used in blends, but boy o boy this wine is delicious!  Bursting red fruit flavors of freshly picked bing cherries and raspberries sing into medium plus acidity and minimal tannins.  The wine is completely unoaked, instead choosing to focus on pinpoint red fruits with hints of spice.  The finish is silky and mouth watering with touches of white pepper, cranberry and violets.  James Score: 91 Points

Raphael Sallet Chardonnay 2014

Macon-Uchizy, France

Cash Price $13.99

I find some of the best value Chardonnays produced in the world come from the Macon.  The wines are typically unoaked and ready for enjoyment from the first pop of the cork.  This wine is bursting with fresh tropical fruits and white flowers. The mouth feel is refreshingly vibrant with medium acids and fresh lemon lime zest on the mid palate.  The finish is pure and focused with notes of wet stones. James Score: 89 Points

Hunter Chaps Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

California

Cash Price $13.99

This Cabernet is a newer addition to our portfolio, but has screamed into the upper echelon of sales very quickly.  It is smooth and extremely approachable on the palate.  Silky flavors of blackberry and cassis reach deftly into a creamy core of plush tannins and acids.  Touches of candied plum and crushed wild berries are prevalent on the finish. James Score: 88 Points

Bliss ‘Blissful’ Red Blend N/V

Mendocino, California

Cash Price $11.89

Bliss winery has been producing some of our top selling value wines in our entire portfolio.  This wine recently changed names (Schoolhouse Red) but the quality in the bottle has not.  This wine is a perennial ‘pizza wine on Thursday night’ wine.  The wine is a hodgepodge blend of Zinfandel and Sangiovese with Barbera, Merlot, Cab, and Syrah for additional structure. Ripe flavors of candied cherries, plums, and clove sinew smoothly through the palate with a rich mouth feel bursting with bright raspberries and cinnamon notes. This wine finishes with integrated tannins and good acidity to make it the perfect food match.  James Score: 88 Points

Indomita Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Maipo Valley, Chile

Cash Price $11.99

I traveled to Chile last year for about a week.  During my travels, I found extremely high quality Cabernet Sauvignon coming out of Maipo Valley.  Even better, the prices were quite affordable for the quality in the bottle.  I think this winery is the epitome of that thought process. Indomita offers flavors of sweet cassis and smoky, dark fruit. There are hints of tobacco and green spice on the palate, bolstered by mature red fruits with medium plus tannins and medium acids.  The finish offers touches of vanilla and cedar in a long lasting finish.  James Score: 90 Points

Domaine de Cabasse ‘Les Deux Anges’ Red Blend 2014

Cotes du Rhone, France

Cash Price $11.99

Domaine Cabasse is a true representation of the high quality coming from the Rhone Valley.  The Cabasse name has Italian roots that goes back to the time when the Pope resided in Avignon in the 14th century.  Avignon is the center for the famed wines of Chateauneuf du Pape.  This Grenache and Syrah based red blend is extraordinary.  Flavors of red cherries and raspberry blossom in the mouth with hints of rich cream.  The wine has medium tannins and acids that never over power, but in fact enhance the flavor profile.  Notes of garrigue and spices play through the mid palate with hints of black pepper and sage.  The finish is soft and eloquent with smidgeons of wild red berries and strawberry cream.  James Score: 89 Points

Pigmentum Malbec 2015

Cahors, France

Cash Price $9.99

This wine is also from the highly acclaimed house of Georges Vigouroux.  He produces the best priced Malbec in the world in my opinion.  With Bertrand-Gabriel Vigouroux at the helm, the quality continues to exceed the price.  This 100% Malbec that has been ranked in the Wine Spectator Top 100 is balanced and food friendly.  The ‘Black Grape of Cahors’ offers flavors of blackberry and dark currant with medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate exudes ripe raspberries with wild berries that soften into a long, lingering finish.   James Score: 90 Points
