JAMES BARLOW’S TOP PICKS OF 2023

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is that time of the year where I pour through my notes to find my favorite wines of 2023. I traveled to Italy, Oregon, Washington State, and California multiple times this year, so I’ve had a lot of opportunities to enjoy amazing wines this year. I taste several thousand wines a year, so these gems really stuck out to me in 2023. As the Domestic Fine Wine Buyer for Spec’s, this list will have more domestic wines than others most likely. I have really fallen in love with Washington State wines this year as you’ll find 3 wines from there in my Top Picks. I spent over two weeks this year really digging into the versatility and brilliance of the wines in Washington State. My Top Pick however goes back to my True Love and Passion in the wine world….Bourgogne. Make sure you pick up these wines when you can, They are all truly Amazing wines. Cheers and Happy Holidays!!! My TOP PICK OF THE YEAR is at the bottom of the list!

#2. Reynvaan ‘In The Rocks” Syrah 2019

The Rocks of Milton-Freewater, Washington State

Cash Price $99.99

I tried the Reynvaan portfolio about a decade ago and was immediately smitten. They produce some of the most interesting, quality driven Syrah in the United States and have been farming organically since their inception. I have become increasingly interested in building our Washington State portfolio as the wines continually show some of the highest quality in America. The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater has baseball sized rocks throughout the AVA and is specifically designated because of the rocky soils. The ‘In the Rocks’ vineyard is a dried up river bed formed by the Walla Walla river more than 15,000 years ago and is reminiscent of the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape. This winery has quietly become one of my absolute favorite in the United States. The wines all have a sense of place and a varietal purity that is second to none. In the Rocks is 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier and shows thick, brooding characteristics. The bouquet offers white and red flowers with dark fruit and a medley of spices. The palate offers dark blackberry encompassed by a rich, thick note of bacon fat and salted ham. The mid palate offers notes of black raspberry tea with cracked peppercorn, whiffs of blue fruit, and star anise. The finish is ridiculously long with excellently structured tannins and smidgeons of mocha, crushed stones and olive tampenade. Hints of sweet tobacco spice wrap up this stunner in a nice bow. TOTAL WOW! BARLOW SCORE: 97 POINTS

#3. Quintessa Red Blend 2020

Rutherford, California

Cash Price $237.49

Quintessa continues to impress even in vintages that were challenging. They practice biodynamic and organic farming, which makes it even harder in years that are trying. Quintessa sits on the eastern edge of Rutherford at the foot of the Vaca Mountain range. The vineyards are a mosaic of soils and micro-climates that allow the winery to offer a true kaleidoscope of complexity from the Rutherford AVA. The wine is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon with other Bordeaux varietals and was aged for 22 months in 60% new French oak. The wine shows medium plus intensity with a deliciously floral, dark bouquet. Thick, rich flavors of raspberry compote, black cherry pie and currant flow into a creamy mid palate. A super plush mouth feel envelops the palate with an insanely long finish that offers notes of vanilla, dusted cedar, savory herbs, and toasted graham crackers wrapped in melted mocha. TLC~Textured, Layered, Complex. BARLOW SCORE: 98 POINTS

#4. Dumol Wester Reach Pinot Noir 2021

Russian River Valley, California

Cash Price $79.79

Dumol continues to consistently produce some of the most classic wines in the Russian River Valley with Andy Smith leading the way as the viticulturist and wine maker for over 20 years. Dumol was started in 1996 with a focus on finding highly nuanced, cool site specific vineyards to craft wines of unique characteristics and terroir. As I tasted this wine with their National Sales Manager, I immediately knew that this would be one of my Top Picks of the year. I rarely give away what I truly think of the wine in a tasting, but I really couldn’t stop the smile that kept creeping onto my face as I tasted through these wines. The 2021 vintage may be the best vintage they have produced from the Wester Reach Vineyards (a blend of three sub districts on the furthest western stretches of the Russian River Valley AVA). The wine is 100% Pinot Noir with a medley of clones (Calera, Swan, Pommard, Dijon) and was aged for 15 months in 20% new French oak. Wester Reach offers a delightfully bright nose with amazing floral notes. Classic flavors of dark cherry and framboise flow into sleek, brilliant tannins and zesty acids. The mid palate gives hints of blueberry and cola that lead into whiffs of earthy minerality and button mushroom. The finish is vivacious with notes of clove, exotic spices, and just a tinge of tea leaf and cedar. JUST WOW! BARLOW SCORE: 96 POINTS

#5. Keenan Mernet Red Blend 2018

Spring Mountain District, California

Cash Price $118.74

Over the last several years of in-depth diving into California wines, I have found that I really enjoy the wines of Spring Mountain District. The wines are taught, balanced, and terroir driven. They shy away from bombastic, over ripe fruit in lieu of age worthy, structure driven styles. Robert Keenan bought 180 acres on Spring Mnt. in 1974. He handed over the reigns to his son, Michael, in 1998. Spring Mountain offers unique soils like basalt, loam, and igneous rocks. The vines can dig deep into the soils to give low vigor and high concentration in the grapes. The Mernet 2018 (pronounced Mare-nay) is comprised of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘Big K vineyard’ and 50% Merlot from their signature ‘Mailbox Vineyard’. This magnificent wine offers flavors of raspberry compote and neon vibrant fruit. Notes of juicy pomegranate flow into medium intensity with a seamless richness and integrated tannins. The finish offers sweet mocha and exotic spices that are encompassed by a whiff of pipe tobacco and cedar. Absolutely Delicious! BARLOW SCORE: 98 POINTS

#6. TOR Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Oakville, California

Cash Price $119.99

Tor Kenward founded TOR winery with the intention of only sourcing fruit from the best blocks in the greatest vineyard sites in Napa Valley. TOR focuses on single vineyard wines that are handmade and bottled in very small quantities. Jeff Ames is the wine maker. He learned under mentors such as Thomas Rivers Brown and Ehren Jordan. The grapes for this wine are sourced from Tierra Roja and Skellenger Vineyards. Tierra Roja is adjacent to icons such as Screaming Eagle, Backus, Maya, and Rudd. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 20 months in new French oak. This wine is an amazingly vibrant and textured wine. It offers an aromatic bouquet of dark fruit and exotic spice. The palate is densely textured with loads of blackberry, currant, and black cherry. The mid palate is sleek and inviting with notes of rhubarb, milk chocolate, and sweet pipe tobacco. The finish is integrated and balanced with hints of dried cigar box, sage, and whiffs of licorice with kisses of toasted vanilla oak. BARLOW SCORE: 97 POINTS

#7. Brooks ‘Bois Joli’ Riesling 2021

Eola-Amity, Oregon

Cash Price $22.99

I spent a week up in the town of Amity in the Iconic Willamette Valley with Brooks winery earlier this year. Brooks has had quite a year for accolades. They recently were named #28 World’s Best Vineyards and were also named a TOP 100 Winery in the World by Wine & Spirits magazine. Janie Brooks Hueck is the guiding light of the winery as she continues to feed the flame in Jimi Brooks (Brooks Winery Founder) memory. The wines are crafted by Chris Williams who has been with the winery for over 20 years. He makes wines of purity and finesse that have an Old World feel with New World panache. The winery is also driven to make the world a better place by being part of 1% for the Earth and Certified B Corp. I was truly surprised by this vintage as I’ve always enjoyed the wine, but this particular vintage is absolutely stunning! This wine comes from the Bois Joli vineyard in Eola-Amity. The wine actually has 29 g/l of residual sugar, but the wine really does not taste sweet on the palate as the beautifully high acidity really brings the sugars into balance. Bright, fleshy flavors of apricot, quince, and melon pop into the palate with neon acidity and kisses of sweetness licking the outer palate. The mid palate shows delicious notes of wet rocks, jasmine, and salinity. The finish is racy with hints of ginger, lemon, and honeysuckle. TLC~Textured, Layered, Complex. BARLOW SCORE: 96 POINTS

#8. Ridge Lytton Springs Red Blend 2020

Dry Creek Valley, California

Cash Price $51.29

I had the pleasure of tasting through Ridge’s entire line up earlier this year and it’s always a joy to taste through a portfolio of wines where everything tasted was of outstanding quality. The 2020 vintage reputation has been marred by the fires throughout California, but Ridge was mostly unaffected. The Lytton Springs 2020 is a blend of 79% Zinfandel/11% Petite Sirah/10% Carignan and was aged in air dried 1-5 year old (15% New) American oak for 13 months. Ridge has been producing wine from this vineyard since 1972. Lytton Springs vineyard was planted in the 1870’s, so the vines produce small yielding, but very high quality fruit. John Olney makes this wine for Ridge and has become extremely adept at showing true terroir from this vineyard. Dark, brooding flavors of smokey roasted meat show immediately on the palate with a beautiful salinity throughout the core of the wine. Ripe flavors of black cherry, currant, and wild berries pop in the palate with delightfully fine, chalky tannins. The finish offers hints of blueberry pie and earthy tobacco. BARLOW SCORE: 95 POINTS

#9. Lucie Bacigalupi Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Russian River Valley, California

Cash Price $49.99

Klaus and Kyle Janzen have truly created something special with their Bacio Divino wines. Legendary wine maker Kirk Venge is at the helm of wine making here. They have been able to procure fruit from one of the highest renowned vineyards in the Russian River Valley in Bacigalupi Vineyard, which has been around for well over a century. This wine is named ‘Lucie’ after Klaus’s wife and is deliciously pure from start to finish. Lucie is 100% Chardonnay that was aged in one year Taransaud French oak for 10 months. The nose offers a plethora of white flowers and apple blossoms. The palate is wonderfully gracious with flavors of Granny Smith apples, melon, and creme brulee that sinew into a medium intensity. Beautifully balanced, the wine gives hints of pie crust while encompassing the palate with smidgeons of hazelnuts, buttered toast, and just a kiss of toasted almond. BARLOW SCORE: 96 POINTS

#10. Long Shadows ‘Feather’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $69.99

I spent a couple of weeks tasting through hundreds of wines in Washington State this year, really diving into the diverse brilliance of the wines coming from the countries 2nd largest growing wine region. Long Shadows was created by Allen Shoup, who was at the helm of Chateau Ste. Michelle and helped form the Washington State wine scene. His unwavering commitment to Washington State wines drove his personal vision of creating a winery that brought together some of the most talented wine makers in the world to produce the best wines that Washington can offer. The Cabernet Sauvignon from this winery is produced by Legendary wine maker Randy Dunn who has been making stunning Napa Valley wines for decades. The 2019 vintage is one of pure intensity with a great growing season. This wine was aged in 85% new French oak for 22 months. Robust and purely concentrated flavors of blackberry and freshly picked plums rock through wonderfully structured tannins. The mid palate is plush and inviting with a soft, creamy core. The finish is vibrant and long lasting with notes of vanilla, graham crackers, dried herbs, and just a kiss of anise. BARLOW SCORE: 95 POINTS

#11. Kathryn Hall Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $213.74

I had Kathryn Hall in town earlier this year to show her wines to Spec’s consumers at an event. She truly is a consummate entertainer! I’ll admit that it had been awhile since I had tasted through her portfolio. I was stunned at the silky deliciousness of her wines. Kathryn acquired land in St. Helena in 2003 after growing up working her family’s vineyards in Mendocino. Hall winery is a true state of the ART facility and they farm more than 500 acres of classic Bordeaux varieties. This classic Napa Valley wine is 95% Cabernet and was aged for 25 months in 75% new French oak. It offers excellent structure with medium plus intensity. Rich flavors of currant and blackberry burst into the palate with hints of ripe blueberry. The mid palate shows blackberry compote, violets, and a creamy core. The finish is long and lingering showing notes of toasted graham crackers, vanilla bean, and melting dark chocolate. Beautifully Lush! BARLOW SCORE: 96 POINTS

#12. Jonata ‘Todos’ Red Blend 2018

Ballard Canyon, California

Cash Price $59.84

The name Jonata pays homage to the 1845 Spanish land grant which now covers a large part of the Santa Ynez Valley. Ballard Canyon is is smaller AVA located within Santa Ynez. Matt Dees has been producing Jonata wines since its inception in 2004. Todos translates to ‘everyone’ and I agree that everyone should give this wine a whirl. Todos is an absolutely stunning blend of 45% Syrah/21% Cabernet Sauvignon/14% Petit Verdot/9% Petite Sirah/5% Merlot/6% other reds varieties and aged in 18% new French oak. Dense and dark flavors of blueberry and raspberry compote lead into a creamy core. This wine is dangerously silky on the palate with notes of molasses, clove, and graham crackers that are encompassed by soft, yet gripping tannins. The finish is chalked full of mocha and exotic spice. Delicious! BARLOW SCORE: 95 POINTS

13. Metier by Delille Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $28.49

Metier is the new 2nd wine from Delille Cellars. I have always been quite impressed with the wine making skills of Jason Gorski. I had the pleasure of visiting the winery while on the Washington State Road Trip this year and was able to dive in and really get a feel for the absolute dedication to producing quality wines from start to finish. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from unique sights throughout the Columbia Valley with a good portion coming from Candy Mountain AVA. The wine is aged in 40% new French oak. Metier translates to a ‘profession or occupation one is good at’. The wine offers medium intensity with red fruit, currant, and a soft core of finely integrated tannins. Whiffs of mocha and vanilla flow throughout the palate. The finish show hints of tart cherry mocha, leather, tobacco and cedar that flows into a long and beautifully integrated mouth feel. Delille knocked this wine out of the park for the price. It drinks well above it’s price point, so I’d seek this wine out to get early and often. BARLOW SCORE: 92 POINTS

JAMES BARLOW’S TOP PICK OF 2023

#1. Domaine Henri Delagrange et Fils Vieilles Vignes (Old Vine) Pinot Noir 2019

Volnay, France

Cash Price $77.89

I first visited this winery way up at the top of the hill in Volnay while Tom Dobson and I were at Grands Jours de Bourgogne looking for new properties to bring into our portfolio. We got a tip that there were some amazing wines being made at this Domaine and so we made an appointment to visit them. They tasted us through a plethora of their wines, but I knew after the first sip that we would be buying these wines. I personally purchased a magnum of their Volnay-Santenots to put in my own cellar after the tasting. I recently re-tasted this wine while teaching a class on Bourgogne and was absolutely slapped in the face with how well the wine was drinking right now. Henri Delagrange is a six generation of wine growers that started in 1947 with Didier Delagrange maintaining the farming for the last 23 years. The seventh generation, Didier’s son Alexis, has taken a more integral role in the Domaine as of the 2017 vintage. He produces wines of structure, elegance, and finesse. Alexis has studied the world over in such places as South Africa, Oregon, New Zealand, and Australia to find the best balance of wine making to bring back to their humble Domaine. He truly brings a new perspective to wine making in Volnay with a subtle blend of modernity and tradition with respect for the land. The family farms with a Lutte Raisonnee (reasoned struggle) which is essentially organic farming. All the grapes are hand picked and sorted in the vineyard. This particular wine is 100% destemmed to produce a cleaner, more fruit driven style of wine. The 100% Pinot Noir is then cold macerated for more vibrant color then fermentation begins with indigenous yeast. It is either pumped over or punched down depending on its specific designation then put in barrel to mature for 12 months in 20% new French Oak. Sleek and inviting from the first sup, this wine has a hypnotic bouquet on the nose of violets, red flowers, and spice. The palate is equally enchanting with flavors of blueberry exploding on the palate with a creamy currant core. The mid palate is elegant and graceful with curvy notes of raspberry and blackberry with tinges of tea leaves that are encompassed by silky tannins and integrated acids. This wine is amazingly textured with a dense core of dark fruit that truly covers every taste bud in your palate. The finish is balanced and pure with hints of Portobello mushroom, cola, and whiffs of exotic spice. STUNNING! BARLOW SCORE: 98 POINTS

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF JUNE 2023

Storybook Mountain Mayacamas Zinfandel 2018

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $45.99

I am super pleased to be able to offer you all this Iconic winery! They haven’t been in the Texas market for several years and I’ve been able to bring back one of the best Zinfandel producers in all of Napa Valley. Storybook Mountain is located at the top of Napa Valley on the eastern slope of the Mayacamas Mountains. Famed Wine Critic Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) once described Storybook wines as ‘representing the pinnacle of wine quality in California’. They are consistently highly rated and have been awarded the prestigious honor from Wine & Spirits as being one of the ‘TOP 1OO Wineries in the World’! The vines are organically farmed and they produce some of the most prestigious wines in Napa Valley. The wine is not bombastic in the least for a Zinfandel. Ripe, refined flavors of dark cherry and blueberry flow gracefully into the palate with medium intensity and a silky purity. Notes of cola, mocha chocolate, and just a whiff of anise show on the mid palate. The finish is long and intense with loads of exotic spice, vanilla bean, and cardamom. TLC (Textured-Layered-Complex) Barlow Score: 96 Points

Devil’s Candy Red Blend

California

Cash Price $29.99

This wine has been scorching hot in our portfolio. The blend is primary Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon with a smidge of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono sourced mainly from Oakville and Calistoga. The wine is nearly opaque in the glass. Rich, hedonistic flavors of blueberry and bramble pound into the palate with medium intensity. Neon purple fruit round into the mid palate with hints of exotic spice. The finish is thick and rich with plenty of blackberry and touches of cedar and vanilla. Barlow Score: 90 Points

Etesian Blanc de Noirs Brut Sparkling Rose NV

Sonoma, California

Cash Price $18.99

Etesian is an excellent sparkling wine for us from an extremely reputable winery (It’s a secret!) that we’ve been able to procure at a great price point. Coming from a bubble head, I’ll tell you that these sparklers are absolutely delicious! This sparkler comes from Carneros on the Sonoma side. The wine is 58% Pinot Noir/42% Chardonnay produced Method Champenoise (Champagne!) and aged on the lees for 2 years before release. Flavors of white cherry and citrus flow into tight, clean bubbles. The mid palate shows notes of lemon and orange peel that sink into tingles of raspberry cream. The finish is light and refreshing with whiffs of lemon meringue and chocolate truffles. Barlow Score: 91 Points

Ca’Momi Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $21.84

Ca’Momi Napa Valley Cabernet has consistently been one of our best selling Cabernet’s for many years.  This American winery with Italian roots produces excellent value wines across the board.  This 100% Cabernet is wonderfully complex with flavors of ripe cassis and black cherry.  The wine has been aged for 18 months in oak and it shows on the palate.  Notes of spice integrate through the balanced tannins and acids.  The finish offers plush hints of currant, cream and toasted oak.  Chocolate mocha sits on the palate for a good long time.  This is a great value Cabernet Sauvignon!  Barlow Score: 89 Points

Kiona Vineyards Chardonnay 2022

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $19.94

I’m proud to announce that we’ve joined into a partnership with Kiona Vineyards! They are the original winery on the famed Red Mountain AVA in Washington State. They are family owned and 3rd generation farmers. Although this wine is labeled Columbia Valley, it is 100% Estate Red Mountain fruit from the oldest plantings in the AVA. The wine is beautifully textured and offers delicious flavors of pineapple, melon, and lemon meringue with medium intensity. The mid palate is plush, offering ripe tree fruits that meld into a soft creamy core. The finish is soft and enticing with hints of hazelnuts, toasted oak, and wet stones. There is a real sense of place to this wine. Yummy! Barlow Score: 92 Points

Chateau Ampelia Red Blend 2016

Cotes de Castillon, France

Cash Price $19.94

Castillon borders St. Emilion on the right bank of the Garonne River.  The region is primarily devoted to Merlot and is considered the value version of the right bank.  This wine is 95% Merlot with the remainder being Cabernet Franc.  Ampelia is medium bodied and peaking right now.   Flavors of blueberry and black currant flow seamlessly through medium tannins and acids.  Notes of cedar and vanilla play through the finish with tinges of plum.   Ampelia is tailor made for a thick steak and always give a Bordeaux wine its proper due by decanting it for awhile.  This wine is peaking now!  Barlow Score: 91 Points

Mer Soleil Pinot Noir 2019

Santa Lucia Highlands, California

Cash Price $18.49

Mer Soleil continally shows excellent quality without breaking the bank. Santa Lucia Highlands is becoming an increasingly popular area to produce stellar Pinot Noir. This winery is owned by Chuck Wagner (Caymus) but he does not give this wine a heavy hand. Delightfully fresh flavors of red cherries and cranberry pop playfully into the palate with medium intensity. Notes of exotic spice and hazelnuts flow freely into the mid palate. The finish is clean and fleshy with hints of cola and raspberry tea. Barlow Score: 90 Points

Single Lot #01 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Alexander Valley, California

Cash Price $15.99

I immediately asked how much I could buy when I tried this Cabernet. It’s nearly IMPOSSIBLE these days to great Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for this price! This wine is like the ‘Block Estate’ wines in that once it sells out….it’s GONE forever. Bold, powerful flavors of blackberry and cassis sink into a voluptuous mouthfeel. The mid palate is rich and enticing with notes of milk chocolate and blueberry pie crust. The finish is long and sensual with lush notes of vanilla bean, toasted oak, and circus peanuts. GREAT VALUE! Barlow Score: 92 Points

Oregon 99West Pinot Gris 2021

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Cash Price $14.99

Oregon Pinot Gris is often lost in the white wine world due to the popularity of its Italian counterpart.  Pinot Gris from Oregon is slightly heavier with more viscosity and fleshier fruits than Italian Pinot Grigio.  This wine displays racy flavors of peach and apricot in a completely un-oaked atmosphere.  The wine has a round mouthfeel with medium acids that sink into notes of citrus and pear blossoms.  The finish is mouth watering with hints of tropical fruits and apple blossoms. We’ve been short on this wine for awhile. So I’m quite happy to be able to offer this wine again!  Barlow Score: 89 Points

Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red Blend 2018

Lake County, California

Cash Price $14.99

Lake County is continuing to build momentum and garner praise for rock solid reds in the region north of Napa Valley.  Shannon Ridge was awarded the ‘Top Winery’ at Houston’s Uncorked Wine Competition in 2015 and their sales have exploded ever since.  This winery is releasing a stellar red blend based on Zinfandel and Rhone Varietals.  Wrangler Red is a silky smooth Zindandel, Syrah blend that screams fruit from the onset.  The wine has been aged in French and American oak for 18 months.  Intense flavors of black cherry and black raspberry seep through the full blackberry with medium tannins and acids.  Notes of graham cracker and cinnamon are prevalent on the mid palate with touches of sweet tobacco and milk chocolate.  The finish is creamy and velvety with smooth lingering tones of rich fruit and spice.  Best Daily drinker that money can buy!  Barlow Score: 89 Points

Barnard Griffin Dry Rosé of Sangiovese 2021

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $13.99

This is one of the original winery’s in Washington State. Rob Griffin started in Washington State in 1977. He and his wife, Deborah Barnard, started the iconic winery in 1983. The winery is still family owned and run with their daughter, Megan Hughes at the helm as head winemaker. The wines are still value based and really over deliver for the price! This delightfully refreshing Rosé is bursting with flavor. Racy strawberries and fresh cherries explode into the palate with medium intensity. Notes of melon show on the mid palate with hints of white pepper and garrigue. The finish is crisp and shows nice acidity with touches of candied red lollipops and watermelon. Barlow Score: 90 Points

Girasole Organic Pinot Blanc 2021

Mendoncino, California

Cash Price $14.99

This ORGANIC value winery has been a lightning rod in our portfolio. It is rare to get organic wine at such a great price point. Pinot Blanc is a white variety in the Pinot family.  It is arguably one of the purest expressions of the variety.  The wine is pale straw in color and offers flavors of freshly squeezed lemons and fresh cut melon with medium intensity.  The mid palate shows nectarines and honeysuckle with just a whiff of wet rocks.  The finish is lovely with tinges of white flowers and tree fruit.  Perfect summer white!  Barlow Score: 90 Points

Barnard Griffin Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $12.99 BUT ON SALE THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH FOR ONLY

$11.97

I recently visited Washington State and made it a priority to get these wines into our portfolio. Their Sauvignon Blanc has always over-achieved in my opinion. The grapes are grown on some of the oldest vines in Washington State. The wine typically has a smidgeon of Semillon to soften out the crisp acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc. This wine boasts popping flavors of pear, apple, and citrus lime with medium intensity. The mid palate is juicy while still exhibiting a deliciously pure backbone of acidity with just a kiss of honeydew melon. The finish is crisp, refreshing, and begs for another sip! YUM! Barlow Score: 91 Points

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS FOR MAY 2023

Baer Merlot 2016

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $34.99

Baer Winery is producing some absolute rocking Red wines. I’ve had the Ursa blend over the years and jumped at the opportunity to bring these wines back into our portfolio. Erica Orr is the winemaker for these single vineyard wines. She worked her first harvest with Cathy Corison! The wines are all single vineyard from Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman hills. The vineyard has quickly earned a reputation as one of Columbia Valley’s Top Vineyards. Thankfully, Merlot is making a comeback with the American palate. This wine is 100% Merlot and was aged in 40% New French barrique for 21 months. The wine has a plush nose. Flavors of plum, dark cherry and lavender enter the palate with medium intensity. The mid palate is soft and inviting with hints of crushed rocks. The finish is smooth and easy with hints of vanilla, cedar, and red roses. You’d be remiss if you didn’t get this beauty in your basket! Barlow Score: 92 Points

The Auctioneer Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $29.99

The Auctioneer is affectionately named after Michael Broadbent, the 24th Master of Wine, whose career is steeped in tradition and history. He partnered with Robert Mondavi in 1981 to start the Napa Valley wine auction. It is becoming increasingly hard to find $30 Napa Cabernet on the shelves, so it’s a pleasure to be able to offer this one with such history behind it. The wine offers medium intensity with flavors of cassis and blackberry flowing from the start. Notes of juicy plum and black cherry show in the mid palate with easy tannins. The finish is gracious with whiffs of graham cracker, vanillin, and toasted cedar that becomes long and alluring. Auctioneer was aged in 60% new French oak for 15 months. Barlow Score: 91 Points

Brooks Pinot Noir 2021

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Cash Price $29.99

This winery is fully sustainable with most being organic or biodynamic.  The wines offers purity and finesse that make this winery one of the top producers in the United States. They are also one of the first wineries in the United States to partner with 1% for the Earth.  One Percent of all their sales goes straight back into making our Earth a better place.  But enough about the winery!  This smashingly vibrant Pinot offers bright flavors of strawberry and pomegranate on the nose with a rich cherry texture and pie crust filling the mid palate.  The finish is amazingly complex with notes of dried rose petals, hints of forest floor and crunchy red fruit that lingers on the palate for a delightfully long time. Enjoy! Barlow Score: 92+

Blue Rock ‘Baby Blue’ Cabernet Based Red Blend 2020

Alexander Valley, California

Cash Price $32.99

I am always excited to offer wines for the passionate and hard working Kenny Kahn and Company. For Kenny it truly is a labor of love and a life passion to grow grapes in the picturesque Alexander Valley. Blue Rock winery has gained a reputation for producing silky smooth reds from their 100 acre estate in the famed AVA of Alexander Valley. This wine is a 44% Cabernet Sauvignon/32% Merlot/10% Syrah/4% Malbec/9% Petit Verdot/1% Cabernet Franc blend that is aged for 12 months in French oak and dangerously approachable from the pop of the cork.  Sleek flavors of blackberry and currant run into the silky smooth palate that offers a core of milk chocolate.  The tannins are elegant and integrated with easy acids that play into the gracious amount of fruit.  Notes of toasted oak and vanilla sink into hints of black tea and espresso.  The finish is soft and plush with a plethora of fruit and oak. This wine is built to be delicious from start to finish!  Barlow Score: 91 Points

The Escape Artist Red Blend 2020

Alexander Valley, California

Cash Price $23.99

Nick Goldschmidt continues to produce outstanding value wines from Alexander Valley. He is one of the best wine makers in the world with an amazing list of wineries that he has dealt with over the years. He lives right near Alexander Valley and farms several vineyards in the area. I am pleased to offer this new project from him called ‘Escape Artist’ Red Blend. It is a blend of 71% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec that has been aged in French oak. This vibrantly intense wine offers red fruit on the palate with hints of black cherry and blueberry. The mid palate is well balanced with a supple roundness. The finish is smooth and enticing with hints of tobacco leaf, vanilla, and exotic spice. Barlow Score: 91 Points

Dusty Nabor ‘NSO’ Syrah 2018

Sta. Rita Hills, California

Cash Price $18.99

I love good value Syrah. Dusty Nabor is rocking this beauty for under $20. The wine is from the cool climate of Sta. Rita Hills and fermented 30% whole cluster in large foudre barrels for two years. The wine is quite energetic and bursting with nervy fruit. Flavors of pomegranate and raspberry pump into the palate with licks of blue fruit enticing the palate. The mid palate offers classic Syrah notes of peppercorn and spice that stick to the bones of the wine while letting the fruit flow freely throughout. The finish tapers a bit while showing whiffs of lavender and wild flowers. He doesn’t make a lot, so make sure to get this in your basket early and often! Barlow Score: 90 Points

The Diver Brut N/V

California

Cash Price $19.94

California bubbles are on the rise! This California sparkler is 80% Chardonnay/14% Sauvignon Blanc/6% Gewurztraminer sourced from Monterey and Mendocino made in Charmat method. The wine has pale straw color with loads of citrus on the palate. Notes of white flowers and lychee are prevalent on the nose. The palate offers green apples and pear with hints of biscuity goodness. The finish is clean and floral with a vibrant intensity. Fun and Fresh. Barlow Score: 88 Points

Cru Vineyard Albarino 2021

Edna Valley, California

Cash Price $18.99

I love Albarino. The variety offers an explosion of fruit flavors while retaining nice acidity and typically being unencumbered by oak. This deliciously fresh white offers zingy flavors of grapefruit and melon flowing into alluringly fresh acidity caused by the micro climate of Edna Valley which allows for the ocean’s influence to create a long, cool growing season. Touches of mango and papaya pop into the mid palate with a crisp clean finish of lemon lime. YUM! Barlow Score: 91 Points

Republic of Pink Dry Rosé 2020

Central Coast, California

Cash Price $16.99

This delicious Dry Rosé has become my ‘Go To’ pink wine for hot weather! The winery only makes 1 wine. The wine is not done Saignee. These grapes were specifically chosen to be made into a Rosé. This Rhone style (Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah) blend hails from the several single vineyards in the Central Coast. The color of this wine is pale salmon, much like the Rose’s of Provence. Ripe cherries and strawberries burst into the palate with a light creamy core on the mid palate. Taut acidity makes this a great food wine as the finish shows touches of candied watermelon and citrus zest. This wine is downright gulpable! Barlow Score: 90 Points

Barnard Griffin ‘Rob’s Red’ Red Blend 2020

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $14.99

I am extremely excited to have this winery in our portfolio! This Cabernet Sauvignon based red blend is harvested from 6 unique vineyards and aged for 16 months in oak. Ripe flavors of racy cherry and red currant pop into the palate with medium intensity. The core of the wine is quite juicy with plenty of fresh red fruit on the palate with nice acidity and tannins. The finish shows a medley of toasted oak, vanilla, and exotic spices which sits on a palate for a beautifully long time. Barlow Score: 90 Points

Frey Winery ‘Slow Roads’ Organic Red Blend 2021

Mendocino, California

Cash Price $15.99

As you all know, I love to champion a winery that farms with a nod to the environment. This Organic red is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. The wine is Certified Organic and has no added sulfites. This savory and robust red offers flavors of plum and black currant on the palate with medium intensity. The mid palate softens into an easy creamy sensation with hints of dusty tobacco. The finish is soft and pleasurable with hints of blackberry, dark cocoa, and black tea. Barlow Score: 89 Points

Shannon Ridge Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Lake County, California

Cash Price $14.99

Sauvignon Blanc is on FIRE! Many consumers are now experimenting with this delicious variety over Chardonnay due to its easy accessibility and crushable nature. Lake County is making some of the best priced Sauvignon Blancs in the entire United States. This Sauvignon Blanc is jam packed full of citrus fruits.  Perky and fresh flavors of lemongrass and gooseberry tingle into medium intensity and tickles of exotic fruits.  The mid palate is mouth watering with tangerine and orange blossom flowing into a crispy finish of papaya and grass.  Delightfully refreshing. Barlow Score: 90 Points

Barnard Griffin Chardonnay 2021

Columbia Valley, Washington State

Cash Price $13.99

I was enjoying this wine just last week. I’ve found that I really enjoy good Washington State Chardonnay as they allow the delicious eccentricity of the Variety to come forward while retaining the necessary acidity to give the wines structure and sense of place. This 100% Chardonnay is harvested from 4 vineyards and aged in neutral oak barrels for 9 months. The wine exudes a bright citrus flavor profile with green apple and lime popping into the palate with medium intensity. The mid palate offers vibrant acidity while showcasing wisps of melon, apple, and just a touch of cream. The finish is fresh and appealing with notes of wild flowers and butterscotch. Yum! Barlow Score: 91 Points
