JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF AUGUST 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I hope everyone is braving the dog days of summer with high spirits.  As you all know, I have been splitting time between the new Oak Ridge and the Rayford/Sawdust location so it has been harder to pin me down.  I have set up the new store with an excellent array of wine selections that are sure to make even the wine geeks of The Woodlands quite happy.  I will continue have the ‘Thirteen’ picks available at that location and will work there intermittently but not as often.  That being said, I will now begin to focus my time on a new project at the Rayford/Sawdust location that will make everyone extremely happy.  An official announcement will be made soon.  Also, I was astounded at the crazy turnout for our consumer appreciation tastings and will be announcing another spectacular tasting in the near future.  I look forward to seeing you all soon with a delicious bottle of wine in hand!

Contaldi Castaldi Saten  Sparkling 2008

Franciacorta, Italy

Cash Price $38.39

Franciacorta produces the highest quality sparkling wines in all of Italy.  The wines are made with the Methode Champenoise technique (style used in Champagne) in the northern Lombardy region.  The key to this wines beautiful array of complexity and silky texture is the implementation of ‘Saten’ style which tones down the atmospheres (pressure of bubbles) which gives the ensuing wine extra finesse and elegance.  In short, it is the perfect sparkling wine for the scorching hot summers of Houston.  A beautiful bouquet of aromatics lift from the glass with nuances of wild meadow flowers and freshly baked bread.  Flavors of freshly picked green apples and apricots flow easily through soft, but tight bubbles.  Notes of exotic fruits and fig touch into zesty acids and hints of brioche.  The wine sees partial malolactic fermentation and is aged for 30 months on its lees.  This 100% sparkling Chardonnay is divine!  91 Points Wine Enthusiast.

Ampelos ‘Lambda’ Pinot Noir 2011

Sta. Rita Hills, California

Cash Price $29.99

As most of you know,  Ampelos is one of my favorite producers of Pinot Noir in the United States.  The 2011 vintage as a whole was a challenging vintage, but as you know good winemakers make good wine no matter the vintage.  This winery was the first in the United States to become certified Organic, Biodynamic, and Sustainable in Practice which makes them one of the purest wineries in the New World.  The wine is un-fined and unfiltered while aging gracefully for 18 months in partial new French Oak barrels.  Intense flavors of wild cherries and framboise sink into velvety tannins and sleek acids.  The mid palate is encompassing with a rich mouth feel and notes of graham cracker, cardamom and cola.  The finish is quite sexy with rich vanilla, exotic spices and smidgeons of smoked cedar.  Don’t miss out on this gem while it lasts!

Pierre Labet Chardonnay 2013

Burgundy, France

Cash Price $27.99

Pierre Labet is one our more consistent French producers for quality Chardonnay with great pricing.  The grapes come from vieilles vignes (old vines) and are produced with a focus on organic and sustainable practices.  The winery is located in Clos de Vougeot with Francois Labet at the helm.  The wine is exquisite with flavors of ripe green apples, melon and pear with medium acids and just a touch of tannin.  The mid palate is voluptuous with notes of cream, citrus and crushed rocks.  The finish is pure and refreshing with touches of vanilla, hazelnuts and smidgeons of smoky oak.  This is a Burgundy to fall in love with at a great price!

Michel Schlumberger Cabernet 2012

Dry Creek Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

This winery was founded by Jean-Jacques Michel in 1979.  In 1991, Jacques Pierre Schlumberger joined the team bringing with him a more than 400 year old family legacy of winemaking in Alsace.  Thus, the Michel-Schlumberger brand was born.  The winery brings an old world feel to the new world wines that they produce.  The Cabernet from the 2012 vintage is quite possibly the best in Spec’s portfolio for under $20.  La Cime, French for the top or pinnacle, is a stunning wine made from the finest estate mountain top and benchland fruit and aged in barrel for 22 months.  This Cabernet is all about balance and finesse while keeping the hedonistic fruits in check while being 100% organically farmed.  Flavors of blackberry and black currant fill the palate with dark fruits and just a touch of blueberry.  The mid palate shows medium plus tannins and medium acids with a full and textured mouth feel.  The finish gives loads of ripe black raspberry that fall into notes of cinnamon, roasted nuts and vanillin.  Rock Solid Cabernet under $20!

Castillo Perelada Malaveina Red Blend 2008

Emporda, Spain

Cash Price $23.99

Wine has been made at Perelada since the Middle Ages.  The winery is located in the Northeast corner of Spain close to the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean.  The soil structure is a kaleidoscope of slate, sand, alluvial sediment, clay and gravel.  This leads to a lot of different terroir notes in the wines produced.  This particular wine is special because of the 19 hectares of heterogeneous red clay soil.  Red clay is a perfect match for Merlot.  This wine is a Merlot, Cabernet blend with a dollop of Syrah and Garnacha and aged for 16 months in French oak.  Malaveina is drinking wonderfully right now.  Flavors of red cherries and red currant rush into earthy notes of tea leaf and graphite.  Touches of copper, blood oranges and garrigue sink into the mid palate with full tannins and medium acids.  The finish offers dark chocolate, roasted vanilla beans and cedar with a hearty, yet silky finish that lingers beautifully.  Malaveina is ready to drink and begging to be paired with a big slab of beef!

Castellargo Albus White Blend 2014

Friuli, Italy

Cash Price $14.99

In an area best known for Pinot Grigio, Castellargo is producing one of the best quality white blends in the region without the use of its most popular grape.  Albus is a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Friulano that is not aged in oak to preserve the freshness and acidity.  This wine is refreshingly juicy from the first sup.  Exotic flavors of elderflower, guava and lychee zing into medium plus acidity.  Notes of honeysuckle and jasmine quaff through the mid palate with a backbone of minerality.  The finish is clean and lip smacking with hints of citrus.  We showed this wine at our last Italian consumer appreciation tasting and it became an instant classic!

Domain de la Guilloterie Cabernet Franc 2012

Saumur Champigny, France

Cash Price $19.94

Saumur Champigny is one of the geekier regions in the world for Cabernet Franc lovers.  Located just south of the Loire River in the Loire Valley, The Duveau family has been producing wines in this picturesque region for six generations.  The region is chalked full of ‘tuffeau’ which is a chalky limestone soil that is perfectly suited for Cabernet Franc.  This delicate wine is truly special for the price.  Ripe red berries and raspberry flow seamlessly into medium plus acids and medium tannins.  The mid palate shows the rustic terroir and true flavor profile of the grape with notes of cracked black pepper, roasted green peppers and graphite.  The finish is ripe with touches of dusted coco shavings, blackberry and just a whiff of cream.  This is one of my favorite red wines for the Houston summers!

Domaine De La Garenne Rose 2014

Vin de Pays, France

Cash Price $14.99

We are in the throws of Dry Rose season and this is a must try by one of the more dynamic producers in the southern France region of Bandol.  It is a blend of Cinsault, Carignan, and Grenache that is delicious and bone dry.  Flavors of wild strawberries and bing cherries flow freely through medium plus acids.  Notes of red roses and cranberry play through the mid palate with just a touch of garrigue.  The finish is cleansing and leaves the palate begging for more.  Garenne is a serious Rose at a phenomenal price!

Jean Baptiste Adam Reserve Dry Riesling 2013

Alsace, France

Cash Price $14.99

I wrote an article for the Society of Wine Educators a couple of years ago titled: Alsace, The Unheralded King of White Wines.  I am still a firm believer and, in fact, have become as staunch as ever on the subject.  This region makes some of the best DRY white wines in the world!  I am stoked to be able to offer this winery at such a spectacular price.  This family just celebrated the 400th anniversary of their family being grape growers and winemakers in Alsace.  Riesling is the king of white grapes in Alsace making wines that are deliciously dry and hauntingly hedonistic.  Flavors of zesty citrus and orange blossoms flow into medium plus acidity without any encumbering oak.  Touches of apricot and grapefruit sinew cleanly through hints of wet rocks.  The finish is amazingly complex with apple blossoms, wild white flowers and lychee.  This is a Stunning wine that will have you hooked immediately!

Les Tuiles Pinot Noir 2013

Burgundy, France

Cash Price $17.99

Red Burgundy can become pricey very quickly, so (as a bargain hunter) I often find myself in the southern reaches of Burgundy outside the Cote D’Or in search of scintillating Pinot Noir.  The Maconnais has some of the best value Pinot Noir in France.  Light and appealing flavors of bright red cherries and pomegranate are encompassed by medium plus acids and minimal tannins.  Smidgeons of cola and tea leaf play through the core with touches of cream.  The finish is pleasant with hints of rose petals and wild red berries.  Tuiles is a tasty Pinot from one of the best value regions in France.

Domaine Cabasse ‘Cuvee Garnacho’ Red 2011

Seguret Cotes du Rhone Villages, France

Cash Price $14.99

My favorite daily reds inevitably come from the Rhone Valley.  It is really hard to find a bad $15 bottle from the Southern Rhone Valley.  Cabasse is a true representation of the high quality coming from this region.  The Cabasse name has Italian roots that goes back to the time when the Pope resided in Avignon in the 14th century.  Avignon is the center for the famed wines of Chateauneuf du Pape.  Flavors of ripe boysenberry and black currant are rounded out with medium acids and tannins that are silky throughout the core.  Notes of fig and touches of bacon fat sink into rich vanilla beans and garrigue.   The finish offers hints of sage, thyme, and peppercorn which lays on the palate for quite awhile.  Cabasse is a perfect BBQ wine!

Domaine David Richards Chardonnay 2011

Russian River Valley, California

Cash Price $12.99

It is nearly impossible to find a Russian River Chardonnay at this price point, much less a deliciously tasty one. This is a classic example of  California Chardonnay.  Notes of green apples, pear, and apricot are balanced with medium acidity and a nice dollop of hazelnut.  The finish is soft and round with notes of toasted oak and touches of buttered pecans.  A Must Try!

Vina Cumbrero Tempranillo Crianza 2010

Rioja, Spain

Cash Price $10.99

This steal was #62 on The Wine Spectator’s ‘Top 100’ list of 2014 with a rating of 90 points!  Delightfully crisp with fleshy flavors of tart cherry and red currant that  are delivered through medium plus acids and tannins.  Notes of vanilla and cinnamon are prevalent on the finish with smidgeions of rose petal and cranberry.  Female winemaker Maria Martinez has produced a gem form the Rioja Alta with this 100% Tempranillo.  I’m excited to see what future offerings will show!  This one is a no brainer!

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF JULY 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

The dog days of summer have really just been an extension of the rainy May showers this year.  I almost welcome the heat if it gives us a reprieve from the rain!  I have been fielding a lot of questions as to my whereabouts these days because of my absence at the Rayford/Sawdust location as of late.  I have been helping the new Oak Ridge North store gain traction and build their wine selections.  I will be working in the wine department at the Oak Ridge location on Wednesdays and Thursdays for the foreseeable future.  The rest of the time, I plan to continue keeping the Rayford/Sawdust store my home.  Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.  I have picked a marvelous selection of wines this month.  In fact, I am extremely proud to offer several of these wines for the first time to customers.  I am also quite proud to have a Texas wine in ‘The Thirteen’ Picks for the very first time!

Castello Di Ama San Lorenzo Gran Selezione Chianti Classico 2011

Tuscany, Italy

Cash Price $45.99

The Gran Selezione is a brand new Tier in Chianti Classico that is rewarding wineries for aging their wine for a longer amount of time before releasing it to the public.  It is now considered the finest that the Chianti Classico region has to offer.  Castello Di Ama is one of the highest quality wineries in all of Tuscany and the inaugural release of their Gran Selezione named San Lorenzo was good enough to make into the Top Five of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 this past year.  The next vintage (2011) was just released and it is Spectacular!  Located just northeast of Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico, is the picturesque estate of Castello Di Ama.  San Lorenzo is picked from their finest vineyards and aged for 12 months in 20% new barrique.  Divine flavors of wild red cherries and fresh raspberries play into the palate with medium plus acidity and medium tannins.  Notes of red clay and scorched earth sinew through the mid palate with touches of vanilla, cinnamon, and leather.  The finish shows a silky complexity that offers graham crackers and hints of milk chocolate.  This is an impressive offering from Chianti Classico!

Del Dotto ‘Ca’Nani’ Pinot Noir 2012

Sonoma Coast, California

Cash Price $39.89

Ca’Nani, meaning House of Dwarves,  is the newest adventure by the Cult Classic Del Dotto winery.  This will be the only vintage of this label as it was quickly renamed in the next vintage as Piazza Del Dotto. This wine comes from the highly touted area of Fort Ross-Seaview (Flowers fame) in the Sonoma Coast.  Classic Pinot Noir structure flows through this wine.  Flavors of strawberry and bing cherries show brightly with vibrant acids and fleshy, yet restrained tannins.  Notes of cola and rhubarb mellow into hints of almond and tea leaves.  The finish is rich and decadent with tinges of graham cracker, vanilla, and wild berries.  This wine is delicate while still being quite a mouthful!

Seguinot Bordet Chardonnay 2013

Chablis, France

Cash price $21.84

I find that there is nothing finer in my glass on a scorching summer day than a refreshing Chablis.  Chardonnay from the upper reaches of Burgundy is some of the best expressions of terroir driven wine in the world.  The kimmeridgeon limestone in the area shines through in the wine with minimal use of oak.  Jean-Francois Bordet produces this gem that is perfect for the dog days of summer in Texas.  Flavors of green apple and melon zing into medium plus acids with touches of chalky minerality.  Notes of grapefruit and lemon zest play through the mid palate with hints of butter and hazelnut.  The finish offers hints of cream laced with smidgeons of flint and wet stones.  Seguinot is deliciously complex and an absolute steal!

Carne Humana Red Blend 2011

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $28.49

This hedonistic red blend is a blend of Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, and Zinfandel that is sourced from the sub appellations of Calistoga, St. Helena, and Rutherford Valley.  The dark purple color in the glass shows that it will be a massively intense wine.Thick and juicy flavors of  black cherries and pomegranate sinew into medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Hints of licorice, leather and tobacco leaf show nicely on the chewy mid palate.  The finish is long and integrated with notes of vanilla and cedar from the 18 months of French oak ageing.  Carne Humana is a wine that is built for Texans!

Pederanales Cellars Viognier 2014

Stonewall, Texas

Cash Price $15.99

Pedernales produces the best white wine that I have tasted from Texas and at a great price point.  I have been ardently searching for a quality Texas wine to put on this list and am extremely pleased to offer this delicious wine from The Texas Hill County.  Pedernales produces Spanish and Rhone style wines that are winning awards  throughout the United States.  The 2013 vintage was named the Top Texas Wine at the Rodeo Uncorked! Wine Competition.  Flavors of canned peaches and mango flow into a thick mouth feel with medium acidity.  Notes of tropical pineapple and fleshy nectarines are encompassed with a round viscosity that coats the palate.  The finish is clean and pleasing with touches of blood orange and papaya.  This wine would pair well spicy cuisine or be perfectly suited in your glass on the back porch.  Drink Texas Wine Proudly!

Chateau D’Aussieres by Lafite Rothschild Red Blend 2009

Corbieres, France

Cash Price $29.99

Corbieres is a hidden gem for quality wine in France.  First Growth Bordeaux producer Lafite Rothschild purchased vineyards in this area with the intent of making ‘Grand Cru’ quality wine.  They have certainly achieved that feat with this wine.  The 2009 vintage smiled on the South of France with an exceptional harvest that has produced beautiful wines.  This wine is primarily Syrah based with Grenache and Mourvedre that has been aged for 16 months in oak and selected from only the finest plots in the vineyard.  Flavors of black cherry and black currant race through the palate with medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Notes of toasted cedar and licorice sinew harmoniously through the mid palate with exquisite complexity.  The finish offers hints of gingerbread, vanilla, and clove.  D’Aussieres is a tremendously sleek wine from one of the best producers in the world!

Pietra Santa Pinot Gris 2012

Cinega Valley, California

Cash Price $13.99

This Pinot Gris is consistently one of my favorite summer whites.  The winery is situated 25 miles from Monterey Bay and benefits from the cool coastal breezes that allow for a long growing season.  Their Pinot Gris is grown on the highest elevation vineyards on the estate.  Pietra Santa is Italian for ‘Sacred Stone’ in honor of the rich terrain and terroir on which the winery is located.  Italian Wine Maker Alessio Carli has produced a pure and focused wine with this offering.  Flavors of mangos and oranges are up front on the palate with an under current of citrus fruits.  Notes of ripe peaches play through soft acids and hints of stony minerality.  The finish is delightfully clean with hints of white plum and stone fruits.  Yum!

Chateau Tour Leognan Red Blend 2011

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $23.99

Chateau Tour Leognan is the 2nd label of famed Chateau Carbonnieux in Pessac Leognan.  The winery is owned by the famous Perrin family that is known for producing high quality wine in France.  The Tour Leognan label stems from the same land and vineyards that produce the Grand Cru Classe Chateau Carbonnieux wines.  The wine is a 60% Cabernet/40% Merlot blend that is aged for 12 months in 30% new oak.  Flavors of black cassis and plum flow deftly through medium plus tannins and medium plus acidity.  Notes of tea leaf and sandalwood sink into the mid palate with touches of gravelly minerality.  Hints of graphite show on the finish with vanillin and toasted oak.  This is a spectacular price point for the quality in the bottle.

Block 012 Red Blend 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

The newest release from the Block Vineyard Estates is a dynamite red blend that is a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon based wine from the Oak Knoll district in Napa Valley. The climate is cooler in Oak Knoll and the valley floor produces wines with intense dark fruits.  Flavors of blackberry and currant race through medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Secondary notes of plum and fig play smoothly through the rich mouth feel.  The finish offers touches of vanilla and oak with hints of kitchen spices.  Always a hit with the Block Wines!

Domaine Cabasse ‘Le Rose de Marie’ Rose 2014

Seguret, France

Cash Price $13.99

Dry Rose is my drink of choice during the sweltering summer months in Texas.  This Rose is outstanding every vintage and a staple in my cellar.  It is a Grenache based wine with loads of character.  Flavors of freshly picked strawberries and raspberries zing into zesty acids with tinges of citrus and white pepper.  The mid palate offers notes of red roses and wild meadow flowers.  The finish is clean and thirst quenching with smidgeons of lychee and wild red berries.  Make this a summer of Rose!

Rust En Vrede Merlot 2010

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Cash Price $22.49

Rust En Vrede is one of the best wineries in the world that hardly anyone is talking about.  They are consistenly rated as a Top 100 winery in the world and the only one in South Africa.  It was the wine that Nelson Mandela chose to be served at his Nobel Peace Prize dinner.  The wines are old world in style and terroir with a new world fruit complexity that leaves the palate yearning for more.  Flavors of blueberry and plum are encompassed by full tannins and medium acids.  The mid palate exudes notes of wild blackberries and black cherry with tinges of roasted meat.  The finish expresses terroir with touches of graphite combined with oak tones of cigar box, cedar planks and vanilla that sit on the palate for a nice long time. Perfect wine for a thick, juicy Ribeye!

Shelby Grant Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $12.29

Shelby Grant is a new label in Spec’s portfolio that has taken off like wildfire because of the minimal price point and quality in the bottle.  This wine is taylor made to be a pool party pounder.  Flavors of citrus lemon peel and grapefruit play through medium plus acidity.  The mid palate offers tinges of pear and green apple with freshly cut grass.  The finish is crisp, clean, and refreshing.  Grant is a no brainer Blanc at a great price point!

Chateau Haut Madrac Red Blend 2011

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $14.99

I have been extremely impressed with the 2011 offerings from Bordeaux.  The wine is a 2nd label of 5th Growth producer Lynch Moussas.  It is a classic Cabernet/ Merlot blend that over excels for the price.  I love finding value Bordeaux hidden in 2nd label wines.  Flavors of black cherry and blackberry move smoothly through medium tannins and acids.  Touches of cedar and vanilla are present on the mid palate with hints of leather and cigar box.  The finish is supple and well rounded.  It is a GREAT time to be drinking Bordeaux!

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF JUNE 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I hope everyone was able to brave the torrential rain that has pounded Texas this past month.  On the bright side, most of our lakes are finally back to normal after the long drought that Texas has endured the past several years.  The bright and shiny sunlight has returned and brought the scorching heat with it.    This months picks highlight the lighter style of wines with refreshing acids and softer tannins.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy one (or several!) of my picks this month!

Scholium Project ‘Gardens of Babylon’ Red Blend 2012

Suisun Valley, California

Cash Price $44.64

I am extremely pleased to offer this cult wine from famed wine maker Abe Schoener.  Scholium, Greek for school or scholarship, is a project meant to highlight wines off the beaten path with Abe, student of John Kongsgaard, at the helm.  He has blazed a reputation throughout California as a rebel wine maker that produces pure, terroir driven wines with the intent to highlight the natural side of wine making.  This wine is a blend do 60% Petite Sirah, 30% Cabernet, with a touch of Cinsault and Syrah.  90% of the fruit comes from the Babylon and Wolfskill vineyards tended by Steve Tenbrinks.  This wine is pure and complexly driven from the start.  Flavors of blackberry and black cherry are lead into medium plus acidity and medium plus tannins.  Notes of all spice and black pepper sink through richly textured flavors of blueberry pie, confection and vanilla.  The finish offers tinges of wild flowers and rose petals with touches of bramble and herbs.  This is definitely a thinking man’s wine.  Very limited quantity available!

Leadbelly Pinot Noir 2013

Russian River Valley, California

Cash Price $29.99

I love when Pinot Noir season is upon us!  It is easily one of my favorite varietals because of its complexity and versatility.  This 100% Pinot Noir is a classic example from a glorious vintage. The 2012 and 2013 vintages are shaping up to be very high quality with a possibility of being considered the best of the decade. Time will tell, but the wines that I have tasted are fabulous!.  This wine exudes flavors of wild red cherries and raspberry that become entangled with touches of cola and anise.  The wine has medium plus acids and medium minus tannins.  Notes of wild red flowers and silky strawberry give way to hints of forest floor, button mushroom, and kitchen spices.  The finish is plush and giving with a velvety texture that lingers on the palate beautifully.  Classic Pinot from a classic vintage!

Contadi Castaldi Brut Sparkling N/V

Franciacorta, Italy

Cash Price $23.99

I think the sparkling wines from Franciacorta are some of the best value bubblies in the world.  They use the Methode Champenoise (traditional method) of Champagne and implement specific aging requirements that give the ensuing sparklers added complexity and at a better price point than that of Champagne.  Contadi Castaldi is my ‘go to’ sparkler when showing people the deliciousness of the wines from this area because of its intense quality and great price point.  This wine is primarily Chardonnay with touches of Pinot Noir and Pinot Bianco and aged for seven months in stainless steel and barrique, then spends 20-26 months aging on its lees for complexity.  Flavors of citrus, green apples and white peach sing through the palate with small tight bubbles.  The wine has a thirst quenching mentality with medium plus acids that play through hints of meadow flowers and honey with licks of confection and cream.  Wine Enthusiast 91 Points!

Chateau Pontac Lynch Red Blend 2011

Margaux, France

Cash Price $29.99

How can I review a Bordeaux in June you ask? Well, Margaux is considered the lighter, more elegant red wine of the left bank.  I have been extremely impressed with the 2011 vintage in Bordeaux.  As most of you know, the 2009 & 2010 vintages were some of the finest that Bordeaux has produced back to back in quite awhile, so I think that this vintage will end up become the Great Value vintage of this era.  Pontac Lynch is consistently high quality at a great price point as their property is adjacent to the Grand Cru Classe vineyard of Rauzan Segla and D’Issan.  This sustainably farmed wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.  This wine is young but quite approachable right now.  Flavors of black currant and black cherry dance into nuanced acids and lively tannins.  Notes of cigar box and leather play through the mid palate with tinges of cedar and sandalwood.  The finish offers hints of mocha and vanilla bean that lead into a long, lingering finish.  Fall in love with Bordeaux this summer!

Castello Di Ama Rosato 2013

Tuscany, Italy

Cash Price $18.99

Nestled in the heart of Chianti Classico, this winery is one of the highest quality in all of Tuscany and easily my favorite Rose producer in all of Italy.  The wine is Sangiovese/Merlot based and the saignee (bleeding off) method is used to produce this wine.  This Rose is deliciously dry with bright bing cherries and wild strawberries that sinew gracefully through medium plus acids.  Notes of freshly picked rose petals and lilacs quaff nicely on the mouth.  The mid palate offers a touch of roundness and hints a creamy texture with 40% malolactic fermentation. The finish is all red with hints of cranberry and red apples.  Stunning Rose and a must have in your shopping basket this month!

Edu Pulenta Malbec 2011

Mendoza, Argentina

Cash Price $24.99

Recently I hosted a class at Spec’s Oak Ridge North on quality and terroir in Argentina, specifically Mendoza Valley.  We had a PHD in terroir showing us how he was looking for the best dirt that the region had to offer.  Well, Paul Hobbs is of that same mentality.  He is a Sonoma guy that has found some of the best vineyard sites in all of Argentina and he now imports the wines from these areas to the United States for our tasting pleasure.  I am pleased to see the market starting to focus on quality Malbec over quantity Malbec.  This 100% Malbec by wine maker Javier Lo Forte is truly outstanding.  The wine has a balance and finesse that belies the typically rugged texture of Malbec.  Silky flavors of blueberry and plum seep through the dark purple neon color.  Medium plus acids and tannins are noticeable but play second fiddle to the beautiful fruit flavors.  Notes of black cherry and fig touch through the mid palate with jammed raspberry.  The finish is wonderfully balanced with hints of cedar, almond, milk chocolate and just a touch of vanillin.  Perfect Rodeo wine!

Dr. Frank Dry Rieling 2014

Finger Lakes, New York

Cash Price $14.39

I am an ardent supporter of Riesling, especially the Dry style.  Riesling is the most versatile white grape on earth with an amazing range of flavor profiles and styles.  The dry version of this variety has become a darling of the Sommelier community and is quickly gaining traction as the next trend of popularity in the wine world.  I am truly excited to see this movement and hope you will join me in the next revolution of the American wine palate.  Dr. Frank is producing some of the best wines in the United States and easily some of the best Riesling on the market.  Farmed on the shores of Keuka Lake, this wine has a crispness and minerality that give it old world characteristics with low alcohol and medium plus acidity.  Lively flavors of under ripe green apples and citrus lemon zing through the palate.  Notes of pear and melon seep into the mid palate with hints of white peach.  The finish is pure and clean with smidgeons of wet stones and white flowers. Join the revolution!

Giovanni Rosso Nebbiolo 2012

Piemonte, Italy

Cash Price $23.74

This iconic winery has been producing wines from the famed Serralunga d’Alba region for over 100 years.  They are known to produce spectacular Barolo.  The grape of Barolo is Nebbiolo.  Barolo is delicious, but pricey!  A great way to see if this noble varietal is suitable for your palate is to try the introductory version out of the hills of Langhe.  Refeshing flavors of bright red cherries and pomegranate are encompassed by medium plus/high acids and medium plus tannins.  Notes of rose petals and violets quaff through hints of forest floor and portobello mushroom.  Touches of vanilla and white pepper slide into the finish with tinges of cranberry tart.  This wine is a perfect backyard BBQ wine for the stifling summer heat!

Kono Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Marlborough, New Zealand

Cash Price $12.19

Kono is one of the more consistent selling Sauvignon Blanc’s in Spec’s portfolio.  It is the 2nd label of Tohu winery and has absolutely caught fire in the market the past couple of years.  It recently received 89 points from Wine Spectator, which is quite impressive for the nominal price point.  Completely unoaked, this Sauvignon is juicy and vivacious from start to finish.  Flavors of granny smith apple and citrus lemon-lime zest zing through medium plus acids.  Notes of ripe and dripping grapefruit are prevalent on the with palate with smidgeons of jalapeño jam and finely chopped herbs.  Perfect summer party wine that would pair insanely with oysters on the half shell!

Yalumba ‘Patchwork’ Shiraz 2013

Barossa Valley, Australia

Cash price $17.99

Yalumba (Aboriginee for ‘all the land around’) is the oldest family owned winery in Australia with roots going back 160 years and 5 generations.  They also produce some of the finest wines under $20 in Australia.  This classic Barossa Shiraz is loaded with fruit.  Flavors of dark cherry and rhubarb lay on a bed of herbs and cocoa with medium acids and tannins.  Ripe and juicy, this wine’s mid palate offers touches of smoke and tar with stewed plum and licorice.  The finish is supple and inviting with hints of cream and truffle.  It’s a Rock Solid Shiraz that has Australia showing the quality that the consumer is looking for!

Shelby Grant Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $16.99

Shelby Grant is a new addition to Spec’s portfolio and I couldn’t be happier.  I am always on the hunt for great Cabs under $20 and they hit the nail on the head with this wine.  Vibrant flavors of cassis and blackberry rumble through med tannins and acids with hints of cigar box and leather.  Notes of sweet black cherry play on the mid palate with tobacco and a creamy core.  The finish is chalked full of vanilla and toasted oak that lingers nicely on the palate.  Great Value Cab!

Villa Chiopris Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Friuli, Italy

Cash Price $11.89

This wine comes from a region that is famous for Pinot Grigio and yet it is the other white varietals that are gaining recognition from this high mineral soiled area.  Chiopris is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and displays a purity of terrior that I don’t always find in the whites of Italy.  Flavors of citrus lemon-lime sinew through medium plus acids.  Notes of gravelly wet stone seep into chalk and hints of green herbs.  The finish is clean with touches of green pepper, sage and green apples.  I love this Italian Sav. Blanc!

San Felice Chianti Classico 2011

Tuscany, Italy

Cash Price $14.99

This has been my ‘go to’ value Chianti for years.  It seems to get better every vintage and this is the best I have tasted.  The wine is Sangiovese based and produced in the hills of Chianti Classico.  I have always found Chianti to be an awesome summer red because of its zesty acid profile and light tannins.  Felice offers flavors of bright bing cherries and raspberry with medium plus acids and medium tannins.  Nuances of white pepper and tomato play through the core with hints of sage.  The mid palate is smooth and deliciously well rounded with notes of cranberry and wild violets.  The finish is savory with hints of leather and red flowers.  Staple Summer Red!  Wine Spectator 90 Points!

Winemakers of Murphy Goode & Edmeades

David Ready Jr., Winemaker of Murphy Goode

David Ready, Jr. grew up appreciating wine, tutored by his father, one of the founders of Murphy-Goode. As a teenager playing in local Minneapolis bands,

David aspired to be a musician (more specifically, a rock star). This dream drew him to California, where wine captured his interest once and for all.

David worked the crush at Murphy-Goode, where he realized that he had a winemaker’s palate. Working in the cellar also taught him the impact that winemaking techniques have on wine. Looking to broaden his horizons, he joined the harvest in Australia, where he was exposed to new and innovative winemaking methods. Upon his return to Murphy-Goode, he put them to good use as the winery’s Cellarmaster.

By 1997 David was named Assistant Winemaker and in 1998 he set the style for Liar’s Dice and the subsequent Murphy-Goode zinfandels. In 2001, David became Winemaker. “As Murphy-Goode’s winemaker, I have a fortunate advantage: our winery’s history. I know the taste of the grapes; my direct experience tells me when the vineyard is at optimal ripeness.”

At home in Healdsburg with his wife and young son, David still carries with him a love for his native Minnesota – a love that inspired the Minnesota Viking purple on all of the Murphy-Goode labels.  And it’s not uncommon to catch him roaming the vineyards in his Viking helmet, especially during football season.

David also continues his quest for rock stardom by playing the drums and writing music. In fact, he likens winemaking to composing lyrics. Finding the words that best fit the tune is like designing a balanced blend or discovering the type of oak barrel that harmonizes with the wine. A barbeque enthusiast, David claims there is no finer food and wine match than Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon with a grilled beef filet topped with crumbled blue cheese (unless, of course, it is oysters with The Fumé).

“You need to let the wine show what it has in its soul.” -David Ready. Jr.

BEN SALAZAR

About the Winemaker of Edmeades Winery, Ben Salazar

Though Ben Salazar grew up in Napa Valley, where his schoolmates included the Mondavis, he didn’t think of wine as a career until he began serving it from behind the bar of the famed Napa institution, Rutherford Grill.

After a real world education in wine through the restaurant industry, Ben enrolled at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he eventually graduated with a degree in viticulture and enology. Immediately following graduation, Ben was offered a position as an entry-level winemaker at Carmel Road Winery. He worked at the Monterey based winery for a few years before his true calling found him – Zinfandel.

In 2012, Ben was made the lead winemaker for Edmeades Winery, and it is at Edmeades where his love for wine is most evident. As Ben walks the vineyards in rugged Mendocino County, you can hear the passion in his voice as he talks about the wines he makes and the growers he sources from. “The grape growing community up here consists of farmers – incredibly down-to-earth, wonderful people. These folks pay their mortgage and send their kids to school by farming. They’re an absolute treat to get to know and work alongside.”

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF MAY 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

The heat and humidity are quickly descending upon us. As the temperature rises, my palate begins to gravitate towards lighter wines with higher acidity that will quench my core. Mind you, I still have plenty of delicious Cabernets on my table, but whites and roses are a more frequent occurrence.  This month’s selections are a medley of spectacular wines, beginning with my LIMITED allocation of the cult classic Del Dotto Cabernet 2012.  Don’t miss out on this gem in a truly incredible vintage.  Thank You all for continuing to allow me to guide you through the wonderful world of wine as I celebrate my tenth year of service in The Woodlands.  Enjoy!

Del Dotto Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $63.99

Del  Dotto’s reputation as being one of the highest quality wineries in Napa Valley means that their wines sell out every vintage….quickly.  Spec’s is very lucky to have partnered with them to receive a nice allocation of their wines.  The 2012 vintage was perfect for wine growers in Napa Valley.  Grapes easily achieved phenolic ripeness and wine makers were able to let the ensuing wines show the true character of the vintage.  Flavors of black cherry and black berry encompass the palate with thickly extracted cream and milk chocolate.  The wine has medium plus tannins and medium acidity.  Notes of toasted cedar and vanilla dance rhythmically through hints of cinnamon and freshly cracked hazelnuts.  This wine is drinking beautifully right now, but will age easily for the next decade.  Get it While You Can!

Venge Scout’s Honor Proprietary Red Blend 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $35.99

The Venge family is one of the best wine making families in the United States.  Nils and Kirk have made an indelible footprint on the wine making of Napa Valley.  Kirk is the wine maker for this hedonistic Zinfandel driven blend.  The 2012 vintage has been described as the best since 1997 with opulent fruit throughout the vineyards.  Flavors of bramble and black cherry melodically flow through seamless tannins and light acids.  Notes of violets and crushed pomegranate are enveloped by hints of black pepper, licorice and graphite.  The finish is filled with tasty oak, touches of cream and sweet herbs.  Spectacular wine!

Domaine Bachey Legros ‘Sous La Roche’ Chardonnay 2012

Santenay (Burgundy), France

Cash Price $29.99

Located in the picturesque region of Cote du Beaune in southern Burgundy, the town of Santenay produces refined Chardonnay on limestone based soils that give the wine a true essence of the terroir.  Sous la Roche translates to ‘under the rock’ which is where the vines have to dig to get their nutrients and in turn gives the wine its unique flavor profile.  This 100% Chardonnay was aged in oak for 12 months with only 15% of the oak being new, so just a kiss of oak is prevalent in the ensuing wine.  The vineyards are on the  high slopes which allows for excellent ripening.  Flavors of bright green apples and Bosc pear linger on the palate with smidgeons of layered cream and nuts.  A backbone of the wine has a citrus component that flows through the mid palate with notes of crushed wet rocks.  The wine has medium plus acidity that is mellowed by the oak.  The finish offer hints of charred oak and vanillin which lingers on the palate for a beautifully long time.  A Chardonnay to remember!

Schild Estate Shiraz 2011

Barossa Valley, Australia

Cash Price $20.29

Schild winery’s fame has grown in the last several years because of the high scores (Top 10 in Wine Spectator) they have garnered with their entry level Shiraz.  This winery makes high quality wines at all price points in the hills of the esteemed Barossa Valley with vines up to 160 years old.  Dense flavors of jammy black berry and blue berry sink into a sleek core of Moreno cherries.  Notes of dusted coco and milk chocolate are surrounded by medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Touches of sage and black pepper play into oak and licorice.  The finish is pure and balanced.  Shiraz is back on the rise!

Bench Pinot Noir 2013

Sonoma Coast, California

Cash Price $23.74

The Bench label is one of the labels from the Brack Mountain Wine Company that has a knack for finding excellent fruit at great price points and passing the savings on to the consumer.  This wine is mainly sourced from the Sangiacomo vineyard in the heart of the Sonoma Coast (my favorite area for California Pinot Noir).  Balanced flavors of black cherry and raspberry jump into the palate with medium acids and integrated tannins.  Notes of cola and red roses flow through the mid palate with touches of graham cracker and vanilla.  The finish is soft and pure with hints of pepper and toffee.  Rock Solid Pinot Noir!

Tenuta Sant’ Anna Prosecco N/V

Veneto, Italy

Cash Price $15.89

Prosecco is the perfect sparkler for summer.  It is light, flavorful and inexpensive!  Sant’ Anna is extra dry which is softer than a brut sparkling wine with a touch more residual sugar.  It is not sweet, but an extra dry takes off some of the bite that brut can display.  Plush flavors of peach and green apples pop into delicate bubbles.  Notes of mango and pear sing through the mid palate with medium acidity.  The finish offers just a hint of buttery toasted bread.  Delicious Bubbles!

Chateau Pontoise Cabarrus Red Blend 2010

Haut Medoc (Bordeaux), France

Cash Price $19.94

Pontoise Cabarrus is a Cru Bourgeois winery that has produced a stunning red blend in the 2010 vintage.  This Merlot/Cabernet blend is sleek and sexy from start to finish.  Opulent black fruits ooze out of the core with heady oak texture.  Notes of black raspberry and currant are encompassed by medium plus tannins and medium acids with bits of cigar box.  The finish is spicy with hints of toasted oak, vanillin and tobacco which sit on the palate for a nice long time.  Cabarrus is a great wine to pair with food, but will drink wonderfully on the back patio with a loved one.  Iconic wine from a historic vintage!

Triennes Rose 2014

Mediterranee, France

Cash Price $14.99

Triennes is consistently one of my favorite Rose’s year in and year out.  As the heat starts to rise, I quickly begin to gravitate towards higher acid, lower tannin wines.  Rose wines are a perfect medium to combat the Hot Houston Heat.  Deliciously dry, this Cinsault based Rose has expressive and compelling aromatics.  Flavors of bright red cherries and red roses zing into medium plus acidity that quenches the palate.  Notes of wild meadow flowers play into the mid palate with touches of cranberry and red berries.  The finish is clean and pure with touches of salinity and wet rocks.  Fall in Love with Dry Rose this summer!

Ara Pathway Sauvignon Blanc 2014

Marlborough, New Zealand

Cash Price $14.99

My palate really begins to crave Sauvignon Blanc this time of the year.  I replace the heavy oak and tannins with zesty acids and lively fruit.  New Zealand is a no brainer when it comes to choosing quality Sauvignon Blanc with Marlborough being one of the top regions.  This single estate wine exudes flavors of freshly cut grapefruit and citrus with medium plus acidity.  The mid palate gives a touch of tropical fruits of papaya and pineapple with touches of green pepper and habanero.  The finish is crisp with hints of gooseberry and white pepper. A Mouth Watering Blanc!

Vina Robles ‘Red 4’ Red Blend 2012

Paso Robles, California

Cash Price $14.99

Vina Robles is one of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles.  They consistently offer great wines under $20.  Their red blend is spectacular for the price.  It is a Rhone-ish style blend of Petite Sirah and Syrah with smidgeons of Grenache and Mourvedre.  Red 4 is produced from the rolling hills of the Huerhuero vineyards on their estate.  Harmoniously ripe, the wine offers flavors of pomegranate and black cherry with a silky cream core.  The mid palate shows medium acids and tannins with notes of plum and ripe raspberry.  The finish is supple and smooth with creamy vanilla, milk chocolate and just a touch of savory spice.  The wine is aged in American and French oak for 16 months to give it added complexity.  Red 4 is a steal at this price point!

Bosco Del Merlo Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Veneto, Italy

Cash Price $16.89

It is rare to find Cabernet from Italy.  This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is estate grown from the Bosco Del Merlo vineyards in the northern DOC of Venezia.  I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted through their wines.  The Cabernet has an approachable mouth feel while exuding excellent structure and balance.  Flavors of ripe red cherries and plum sinew easily into medium tannins and acids.  Notes of stewed raspberry and red currant are prevalent on the mid palate.  The finish offers a light, creamy texture of vanilla bean and cedar that sits on the palate for a wonderfully long time.  Great Value Cabernet that will pair beautifully with BBQ!

Block 520 Chardonnay 2012

Russian River Valley, California

Cash Price $14.99

The Block Series continues to churn out delicious Chardonnay from the famed Russian River Valley.  This latest limited release may be the best that I have tasted from the Series.  The wine is truly California in flavor profile with plenty of hedonistic tropical fruit and a heavy dollop of French oak.  Flavors of pineapple and melon sink into a round creamy core.  Notes of buttered popcorn and almonds are prevalent on the mid palate with medium acidity.  The finish offers licks of vanilla and crème brulee with hints of peach and mango.  A Guaranteed Summer Stunner!

Lockwood Merlot 2013

Monterey, California

Cash Price $12.99

I have really been impressed with the changes that the Boisset family made when they purchased Lockwood vineyards a couple of years ago.  They decided to give the wines a terroir driven flavor profile, which is unique in California.  The wine is medium bodied with flavors of strawberry, red berries and bing cherry.  Medium acids and tannins are well integrated into touches of black pepper and under earth.  The finish is silky smooth with hints of tobacco and cream.  Tasty Merlot!

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS AND ‘STEALS OF THE MONTH’ COMBINED

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Tax season is upon us and many are penny pinching to get through this trying time of the year.  Nothing pairs better with writing your friendly government representative a check than a nice glass of wine to ease the pain.  This month I have chosen a medley of wines under $20 that are of outstanding quality and great value for your perusal. Enjoy!

Block 955 Proprietary Red Blend 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

The Block series has always produced excellent value for what is in the bottle.  This red is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc that has been aged in French and American oak for 23 months.  The 2012 vintage is turning out to be a stellar year for Napa Valley with plush, hedonistic fruit and balanced structure.  Block exudes flavors of plum, currant and cassis, that are encompassed by notes of creamy mocha, tobacco and roasted nuts.  The tannins and acids are medium and well integrated.  The finish offers hints of vanilla, caramel and cedar with just a touch of graham cracker.  The wine is an Absolute steal and worthy of buying by the case while it is available!

Jean Baptiste Adam Cremant Rose N/V

Alsace, France

Cash Price $19.94

I am always on the lookout for quality sparkling wines.  I have often found the best value outside of the region of Champagne, yet still in the confines of France.  Methode Champenoise sparkling wines made outside Champagne, France are called ‘Cremant’ (pronounced (Cray-mawn).  The term originally indicated that the sparkling wine was less bubbly, but it is generally used as a catch all for sparkling wine outside of Champagne now.  In 2014, Jean-Baptiste Adam anniversary of their family being grape growers and winemakers in Alsace.  The winery is one the leaders in biodynamic farming.  This 100% Pinot Noir is spectacular!  Vibrant pink hues flow into the glass with a bouquet of rose petals and wild strawberries.  The palate offers red fruits of cherry and currant with touches of fleshy wild berries.  The finish offers hints of raspberry and cream which flows seamlessly into a crisp, yet elegant finish.  Perfect Summer Sparkler!

Chateau Castera Red Blend 2009

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price 18.99

Castera is a Cru Bourgeois winery that is held to higher standards than the regular AOP wines of the area.  The 2009 vintage was one to behold in Bordeaux.  Bright, sunny days and cool nights helped the grapes reach full potential ripeness while retaining acidity and structure.  The wine is Merlot based with a heavy dollop of Cabernet and touches of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.  Ripe flavors of blackberry and black cherry sing through medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Notes of black currant are displayed through hints of cinnamon and clove.  The finish offers sweet spices with licks of vanilla and a smidgeon of roasted meat and freshly brewed coffee.  Awesome wine from a vintage that is sure to dazzle!

Tobias Chardonnay 2012

North Coast, California

Cash Price $17.99

The grapes from this wine come from the cooler climate of Mendocino county.  When searching for a Chardonnay, I try to find one that has balance which is not overly oaked or ‘malo-ed’.  Tobias only goes through 30% malolactic fermentation which gives the wine touches of butter and cream that do not over power the fruit or acidity.  This wine has medium acids with tropical fruits of pineapple and melon with citrus notes of green apples and lemon blossoms.  The finish shows touches of melted butter and almonds with just a kiss of oak.  Tobias is beautifully balanced and the new wave in California Chardonnay!

Garrison McBride Cabernet 2011

Sonoma County, California

Cash Price $15.59

This wine is brand new to the Spec’s portfolio and I couldn’t be happier with the juice in the bottle at this price point.  Powerful and richly concentrated, McBride offers medium plus tannins and medium acids.  The wine is a classic Bordeaux style, yet with sleek, ripe fruits.  Flavors of dark plum and black cherry sink into a jammy black raspberry.  The fruits turn into  blueberry on the mid palate and notes of milk chocolate and coffee beans start to come forward.  The finish is chalked full of vanilla, cedar and tobacco which lingers on the palate for a delightfully long time.  Awesome Value Cabernet!

Aya Malbec 2012

San Juan, Argentina

Cash Price $16.99

The new vintage of Aya is even better than the last.  Argentina is a beacon for value reds in the wine world.  Aya honors the land that saw its birth with generous sun, scarce rains and cool nights.  All of these conditions make it possible to grow well balanced grapes, which in turn, make awesome wines.  This wine offers flavors of thick, jammy plum with red cherries and pomegranate.  Notes of toasted cedar and hazelnuts sink into the core with medium plus tannins and medium acids.  The finish offers a medley of cigar box, leather and roasted mocha.  Argentina strikes again!

Waterford Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Elgin, South Africa

Cash Price $14.99

Waterford is one of the best quality producers in all of South Africa.  The way they balance fruit and terrior is second to none.  This wine is different than your New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc because of the lees aging.  Letting a wine age on its lees gives the wine more weight and texture which shows a nuttier complexity.  Waterford exudes succulent fruits of melon, fresh lemons, and guava.  The mouth feel is rounder and fuller than your typical Sauvignon Blanc while still retaining excellent acidity through the core of the wine.  The lees aging gives the wine a softer feel with hints of hazelnut and butterscotch.  The finish is clean and pure without any trace of oak. This is a wine that a Chardonnay drinker will love, but will also please the Sauvignon Blanc/Pinot Grigio lover in your household.  Waterford wines are a no brainer!

La Flor Rose of Malbec 2013

Mendoza, Argentina

Cash Price $13.99

Rose season is coming quickly! I am always excited to see the new vintages of Dry Rose that are released around this time every year.  La Flor is the 2nd label of famed Pulenta Estates which are imported by legendary wine maker Paul Hobbs.  The Malbec grapes are specifically grown for producing stellar Rose wine.  Carbonic maceration is implemented to retain freshness and vibrant color.  Flavors of ripe strawberry and watermelon seep through clean, refreshing acids.   Hints of red apple, raspberries and rose petals dance through the core with tantalizing appeal.  Thank God its Rose season!

Butera Nero D’Avola 2012

Sicily, Italy

Cash Price $12.99

I have consistently found this wine to be of outstanding value in every vintage.  Nero D’Avola is an indigenous varietal of Sicily that has fleshy fruits and medium body, which makes it perfect for summer.  Ripe flavors of black cherry and blackberry play through sleek medium acids and tannins.  The fruit turns slightly stewed on the mid palate with hints of brown sugar and scorched plum.  The finish shows cinnamon, mocha and tinges of coffee grinds. Butera is a very versatile wine that will pair well with numerous dishes.

Smythe and Renfield Chardonnay 2013

Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Cash Price $11.89

Hawkes Bay is located on the North Island and is considered one of the finest regions for growing Chardonnay in all of New Zealand.   This Chardonnay displays flavors of citrus  and lemon lime that begins to turn more tropical in the mid palate.  Notes of peach and apricot sink through medium acids and just a kiss of oak.  The finish is clean and expressive with notes of vanilla, fig and apple blossom.  True Value Chardonnay with excellent balance!

STEALS OF THE MONTH

Anselme Rose 2013

Provence, France

Cash Price $9.49

Deliciously dry with fruits of cranberry, wild red berries and strawberry.  Sweet tart on the finish.

Domiane de Gournier Grenache 2010

Vin de Pays, France

Cash Price $8.99

Fresh and fruity with flavors of red cherry, plum and raspberry followed by a touch of garrigue.  Well balanced and un oaked.
