Domaine de Pouy White Blend 2015

Cotes de Gascogne, France

Cash Price $9.99

A blend of Ugni Blanc and Colombard, this wine is built for the searing heat.  Light, fresh, and un-oaked, the wine offers citrus notes with touches of pear and lemon lime zest.  Low alcohol.  Excellent daily white wine.  James Score: 89 Points

Le Versant Grenache Rose 2016

Vins de Pay’s D’Oc, France

Cash Price $7.99

These wines always over-achieve for the price.  This Grenache based Rose is a STEAL!  Light and fruit forward, the wine offers flavors of strawberry and red cherries with medium acidity.  Clean and to the point, this wine is exactly what is in my glass this time of year.  James Score: 89 Points

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF JULY 2017

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I apologize for the tardiness of this month’s release but I took a vacation, so now I’m a bit behind.  Kids are out of school, vacations are booming, and that usually means that people are lighter in the pocketbooks. This month, I have picked some delicious ‘Value’ reds and whites for this blog, sprinkled with some absolute gems that I have tasted this month.  Enjoy!

Paradise Ridge ‘Elevation’ Cabernet 2013

Rockpile, California

Cash Price $44.99

This Gem Cabernet Sauvignon is often overlooked in our portfolio.  It gets lost among the Caymus, Silver Oak, and Jordan’s of the world, but I would pick this bottle of wine 10 out of 10 times over all the aforementioned wineries.  This stunning Cabernet from the Rockpile vineyard in Sonoma drinks gorgeously  from the first sup.  Ripe flavors of black cherry and currant sink into structured, yet juicy tannins and acids.  Lush notes of chocolate covered raspberries sinew through the mid palate with wisps of vanilla bean and mocha.  The finish is long, lingering and integrated with notes of cinnamon, graham crackers, and cedar.  Only 225 cases produced!  James Score: 95 Points

Chateau du Glana 2011

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $34.59

The 2011 vintage is one of my favorite because the wines are less expensive, but still hold outstanding quality across the board.  St. Julien is one of those appellations that doesn’t get the exposure of its neighboring villages such as Pauillac and Margaux, but often outshines its neighbors without breaking the bank.  This rocking wine offers elegance and balance of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot.  Ripe flavors of blackberry and black currant flow easily into firm, yet approachable tannins and acids.  The finish is chalked full of tobacco leaf, cedar, and smidgeons of vanilla.  James Score: 91 Points

Holdredge ‘Rolling Thunder’ Pinot Noir 2014

Russian River, France

Cash Price $44.99

Some of the best Pinot Noir’s from the United States come from the Russian River AVA.  I think John Holdredge is producing some of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir in all California.  He produces less than 2000 cases and you can put it in the bank that anytime you  pop a cork of Holdredge Pinot, the quality is there.  Lush flavors of raspberry and strawberry fly off the palate with exhilaration and a richness that is delightfully surprising.  The mid palate shows a creamy core with cola and allspice that is woven into rose petals and jam.  The finish is sleek and refreshing with just a kiss of cinnamon, and vanilla cream.  James Score: 94 Points

Waterford Chardonnay 2014

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Cash Price $19.94

Waterford winery located in Stellenbosch continues to overachieve for the money.  I am an avid fan of their Cabernet Sauvignon, and now I would say that this Chardonnay is up there on my list of favorites.  The wine is produced in a single vineyard and aged for 8 months on 26% New French oak.  I enjoy this wine because it is not overly oaked, shows restraint, yet also allows for the fruits to shine throughout.  Waterford exudes flavors of peach and papaya that is encompassed by a lemon citrus zest.  The mid palate shows touches of lees aging with hints of nutmeg and hazelnuts.  The finish has a whiff of creamy oak with coconut butter and hints of minerality.  James Score: 91 Points

Dubost Gamay 2015

Beaujolais Villages, France

Cash Price $14.99

Beaujolais is finally shrugging off the stigmatism that they only produce cheap nouveau wine that you only buy once a year to put on the table for Thanksgiving Day festivities.  This region is producing stunningly elegant and refreshing red wines that are perfect for the dog days of Houston summers.  Vibrant flavors of red cherries and cranberry burst into the palate with tinges of freshly picked strawberry and boysenberry.  The wine offers medium plus acids with medium minus tannins and minimal oak influence. Dubost is all about offering refreshing red fruits with deliciously thirst quenching acidity.  YUM!  James Score: 90 Points

Chateau de Breze Rose N/V

Loire Valley, France

Cash Price $17.99

My continuing affinity for the Loire Valley grows daily when I have the joy of tasting jewels like this wine.  100% Cabernet Franc from Saumur, this summer stunner knocked my socks off for the price.  Breze is considered one of the best organic and biodynamic vineyards in all Saumur and their sparkling Cremants (pronounced Kray-Mawn) are some of the best that they offer.  Flavors of citrus and rose petals zip into the palate with mouth watering intensity.  Hints of wild flowers and raspberry tickle the mid palate with bits of quince.  The finish offers minerality and a touch of salinity with red currant and crisp acidity.  James Score: 90 Points

Gemtree ‘Cinnabar’ Red Blend 2016

McLaren Vale, Australia

Cash Price $16.99

I am pleased to see the Aussies starting to focus on quality over quantity with their wines.  McLaren Vale is considered one of the finest regions in all of Australia and the area is best known for their red blends.  Gemtree garners very high praise from critics on a regular basis.  They have become famous with their organic and biodynamic vineyard practices.  Truthfully, the wines are quite impressive.  This is a blend of 40%Grenache/33% Shiraz/ and 27% Mourvedre.  The wine offers flavors of jammy plums and dark black fruits that offer a thicker viscosity in the mouth feel.  Notes of black pepper and spice are prevalent through the mid palate with medium tannins and acids.  The finish offers hints of tobacco and red licorice that sits easily on the palate.  Good BBQ wine.  James Score: 89 Points

Jean Baptiste Adam Riesling 2015

Alsace, France

Cash Price $16.99

Alsace produces some of the best DRY white wines in the world and this vintage is one of the best I have ever tasted!  I am stoked to be able to offer this winery at such a spectacular price.  This family just celebrated the 400th anniversary of their family being grape growers and winemakers in Alsace.  Riesling is the king of white grapes in Alsace making wines that are deliciously dry and hauntingly hedonistic.  Flavors of zesty citrus and orange blossoms flow into medium plus acidity without any encumbering oak.  Touches of apricot and grapefruit sinew cleanly through hints of wet rocks.  The finish is amazingly complex with apple blossoms, wild white flowers and lychee.  This is a WOW wine.  James Score: 91 Points

12 Gauge Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

California

Cash Price $13.99

Bjorn Larson(Yes, that Bjorn Howell Mountain Cabernet guy) and his compadre were in town recently showing off their delightfully easy drinking Gauge Cabernet.  The theme of this wine is for hunters, but truthfully I see this as a patio wine or daily drinker that never disappoints.  Ripe flavors of black cherry and currant show off this fruity, yet unassuming wine.  Fleshy and fun, Gauge over delivers for the money with accessible tannins and acids that flows into an easy, effortless finish.  James Score: 88 Points

Shannon Ridge ‘Wrangler Red’ Red Blend 2015

Lake County, California

Cash Price $12.99

Lake County is starting to garner praise for rock solid reds in the region north of Napa Valley.  Shannon Ridge was awarded the ‘Top Winery’ at Houston’s Uncorked Wine Competition in 2015.  This winery is releasing stellar red based on Zinfandel and Rhone Varietals.  Wrangler Red is a silky smooth Zindandel, Syrah blend that screams fruit from the onset.  The wine has been aged in French and American oak for 18 months.  Intense flavors of black cherry and black raspberry seep through the full blackberry with medium tannins and acids.  Notes of graham cracker and cinnamon are prevalent on the mid palate with touches of sweet tobacco and milk chocolate.  The finish is creamy and velvety with smooth lingering tones of rich fruit and spice.  Best Daily drinker that money can buy!  James Score: 89 Points

The Ned Rose of Pinot Noir 2016

Marlborough, New Zealand

Cash Price $11.99

This wine is a 2nd label of Marisco and has quickly become one of my favorite ‘inexpensive’ Roses.  You all know that I love Pinot Noir, so it just makes sense that I would love a Pinot Noir Rose.  New Zealand offers fresh and appealing wines that are very consistent in quality.  Bright flavors of wild red berries and watermelon sink into medium acidity with hints of jammed strawberry and cream.  The finish shows raspberry and red flowers with a gentle cream that lingers on the palate.  James Score: 90 Points

Liberation de Paris Red Blend 2015

Rhone Valley, France

Cash Price $11.99

This wine pays homage to the US soldiers that liberated Jean-Francois Bonnete’s fathers town in WWII.  A portion of the sales of every bottle of wine goes to a Veteran’s Hospital right here in Houston.  The wines are quite tasty as well!  This Grenache based red blend is jam packed full of flavors with red cherry and strawberries leading the march.  Secondary notes of fig, cured meat and black pepper are encompassed by medium tannins and acids.  The finish is easy and fun with touches of smoke and garrigue.  James Score: 88 Points

Ryan Patrick ‘Naked’ Chardonnay 2014

Columbia Valley, Washington

Cash Price $9.99

Ryan Patrick’s Chardonnay is fresh, fruity and completely un-oaked! Washington is producing some amazing value, every day wines that over deliver for the price point.  This Chardonnay offers flavors of citrus and honeydew melon with hints of apricot and pear.  The mid palate shows medium acidity without malolactic fermentation.  Theh finish gives ways to green apples that cleanses the palate and begs for another gulp!  James Score: 88 Points

Thank you,

James C. Barlow, CWE,CSS

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Well, the heat is back!  After a lovely Spring, Summer is upon us with a vengeance.  This time of the year, I generally gravitate towards lighter wines with good acidity to keep my palate refreshed.  Here are some daily slurpers for this smoking hot heat of Houston!

STEALS OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE 2017

Pins Des Dunes Rose 2016

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $9.99

This is a seriously impressive Dry Rose for dirt cheap.  Pins offers flavors of bubblegum dust, strawberry, and juicy fruit with medium plus acidity.  The mid palate shows crushed rocks and sweet jam.  The finish is packed full of jolly rancher and watermelon.  James Score: 90 Points

Particular Garnacha 2015

Carinena, Spain

Cash Price $6.99

Garnacha is en Fuego!  It’s inexpensive and absolutely delightfully fun on the palate.  Fresh fruits of black cherry and raspberry are played into light notes of cream.  No oak. Very Gulpable wine.  James Score 89 Points

Gryphus Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Maule Valley, Chile

Cash Price $9.99

This is one of my favorite summer whites.  I think the best value Sauvignon Blancs are coming out of Chile.  Zesty acids are whipped into shape with flavors of citrus and grapefruit with kisses of cactus and meadow flowers.  YUM!  James Score: 90 Points

Thank you,

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF JUNE 2017

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Summer is upon us.  I tend to stick to lighter wines such as Rose this time of year, but I have tasted some outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon based wines lately so I feel compelled to put you all in the loop.  This month is a medley of wines, but I tried to keep the price point down as I know most of you all are saving money for the big summer vacation.  Let’s call these wines, SUMMER STUNNERS!  Whatever wine you are drinking this summer, make sure you are pouring it into a Riedel glass!

Janzen Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $49.99

I recently re-tasted this wine and was even more impressed than the first time I tried it.  Janzen is a Cabernet that you open when you really want to impress your guest.  Winemaker to the stars wine Kirk Venge molded this wine and really showed his handprint throughout.  The 2013 vintage is deliciously hedonistic that is absolutely jam packed full of sweet fruits. He let me in on a secret as well. This wine has a portion of the hallowed To Kalon vineyard fruit in it.  Thick flavors of blackberry and black cherry sink deftly into jammy blueberry pie.  The mid palate offers loads of dark chocolate, black pepper and hazelnut with medium plus tannins and medium acids.  The finish is silky smooth with toasted cedar and vanilla from new and used French barrels and a long, lingering mouth feel.  James Score: 93 Points

Chateau Gaudin Red Blend 2012

Pauillac, France

Cash Price $37.69

The region of Pauillac produces the highest quality and priced Cabernet on Earth.  It is hard to find extremely high quality Pauillac under $50.  Gaudin is nestled between several 1st Growth Chateau, but without the huge price point.  This Cabernet based red blend is massive in tannin structure and flavor profile.  Flavors of red currant and black cherry flow through hints of terroir and medium plus tannins and acids.  The mid mouth feel offer a creamy core that soften the brooding tannins and give this wine a surprising elegance.  Notes of vanilla bean, cinnamon and cedar are prevalent on a long, lingering finish.  James Score: 93 Points

La Varenne Cabernet Franc 2014

Chinon, France

Cash Price $19.29

The Gouron Family has been producing wine for five generations at their estate in Chinon.  This wine is classic Cabernet Franc.  Varenne is all about producing minimal wine at maximum quality.  This 100% Cabernet Franc is perfectly suited for a slight chill and ready to enjoy on the back porch with a steak and veggies during these warm summer months.  Wonderfully integrated flavors of plum and red cherries sink into an earthy tone of freshly churned soil and forest floor.  Notes of blackberry and currant meld beautifully into hints of green pepper, mushrooms and pencil shavings.  The wine offers medium plus acidity and medium tannins that are enveloped with a creamy core that layers beautifully on the palate with all the spices tickling the taste buds througout.  James Score: 91 Points

Eberle Chardonnay 2015

Paso Robles, California

Cash Price $19.22 (on sale for a limited time)

Eberle is one of the highest quality wineries in Paso Robles that does not typically break the budget.  They are determined to produce high quality, friendly priced wines that exceed expectation.  Gary Eberle has taken back control of his vineyard and recently put in his son, Chris Eberle, as  wine-maker (taking over for Ben Mayo).  Gary was one of the founders of Paso Robles and continues the pursuit of excellence with price conservative red and white wines.  This estate produced 100% Chardonnay is all about balance.  Ripe flavors of pear, pineapple and Meyer lemon sing into medium acidity and fleshy fruits.  Tinges of buttered complexity lay on the palate tantalizingly.  The finish is pure and a touch hedonistic with notes of  buttered popcorn, toasted caramel, and vanilla bean.  James Score: 90 Points.

Cougar Crest ‘Dedication Ten’ Red Blend 2012

Walla Walla, Washington

Cash Price $19.94

Cougar Crest is a new addition to Spec’s portfolio.  I recently tasted through their entire line of wines and had the thought ‘There ain’t a dead dog in the bunch’.  I was duly impressed with every offering they showed.  This wine is their introductory blend.  Dedication is a blend of 55% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot.  I am increasing happy with most of the wines coming out of Washington, but am REALLY excited about the Syrah and Cabernet Franc from Walla Walla.  Dedication offers flavors of silky black cherries and blackberries that encompass velvety tannins and soft acids.  The mid palate shows a harmonious display of plum, currant, and creamy texture.  The wine does have a ‘sense of place’ on the palate that makes it distinctly different from California wines.  James Score: 90 Points

Chateau Callac Prestige Blanc 2015

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $18.99

This is easily one of the best priced Chateau in all of Graves.  The whites from Bordeaux are a beautifully sophisticated blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.  Callac is a 80% Sauvignon Blanc/20% Semillon blend that is wonderfully crisp and clean with flavors of cactus, citrus, and melon.  The wine has medium acidity that cleanses the palate while offering mouth watering notes of lime, creamy vanilla, and mousse.  The finish offers notes of cedar, wet rocks and touches of zippy grapefruit.  James Score: 91 Points

Block 227 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Paso Robles, California

Cash Price $19.94

The Block Estate wines never fail to impress me, especially their Cabernet Sauvignons.  The estate has been venturing out to other regions as of late and I am extremely pleased that they have decided to offer a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Paso Robles region.  I think that Paso Robles is offering the best priced Cabernet Sauvignon in all of California at the present.  Rich and ripe flavors of dark currant and blackberry race through medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate offers fleshy blueberry pie with tinges of milk chocolate and vanilla.  The finish is delightfully long and structured with notes of cinnamon and cedar.  James Score: 90 Points

Dampt Chardonnay 2015

Chablis, France

Cash Price $19.94

Some of my favorite Chardonnays come from Chablis.  The wines produced here are the antithesis of California Chardonnay.  The region is on the northern stretches of France and the area is quite cold, so the ensuing wines are typically more acid driven and often do not offer the buttery, oaky sensations offered in California.  Dampt wines are a family affair that farms 30 hectare in Chablis.  This is their basic offering.  Dampt is 100% Chardonnay aged on vines with 30 years of average age.  The wine is stainless steel fermented.  Refreshing flavors of green apple and lime citrus combine with a crushed rocks minerality that sleeks into medium plus acidity.  The finish offers tinges of hazelnut and almond that wisps easily through the palate.  James Score: 90 Points

Domaine Sorin Rose 2016

Cotes de Provence, France

Cash Price $15.99

Rose season could not get here fast enough for me!  I am an ardent fan Rose all year long, but specifically crave it when the hot heat comes pounding at the door.  Domaine Sorin is exquisite with a blue wax top which shows the winery’s commitment to excellence.  The wine is a blend of Carignan, Grenache and Cinsault that explodes on the palate from the first sup.  Flavors of strawberry and bright red cherries sing loudly into the palate with medium plus acidity.  This wine is deliciously dry and can pair wonderfully with light fowl or seafood dishes.  Notes of white pepper and garrigue fall easily in line with hints of wild red berries and pomegranate.  The finish is crisp, clean and ready for another sip.  James Score: 90 Points

Novare Ripasso Red Blend 2013

Veneto, Italy

Cash Price $19.94

Ripasso’s or aka baby Amarone are really becoming a hot topic in the wine world.  The wines are wonderfully priced and offer some of the best red blends on the market.  The wines are sumptuous and succulent, often WAY over achieving their price point.  This label is done by the long famed Bertani family and may just be the best Ripasso that I have ever tried.  The wine is a Corvina blend from the famed region of Valpolicella.  Rich and full bodied flavors of stewed blackberry and black currant sinew deftly through ripe morello cherry.  This wine is all about offering large fruits with minimal tannins and acids.  The mid palate shows touches of sweet berries with notes of cream and spice.  The finish is deliciously flavorful with notes of candied raspberry with whiffs of molasses and blueberries.  James Score: 91 Points

Del Fin Del Mundo Reserva Malbec 2014

Patagonia, Argentina

Cash Price $18.39

I find Malbec to be the perfect red wine for this weather.  It’s not as heady as Cabernet Sauvignon, but not as transparent as Pinot Noir.  The variety is a great balance of fruit and structure that is sure to please most palates.  Mundo offers flavors of violets and red fruits with hints of plum and red roses.  The mid palate offers medium tannins and acids that are enveloped by red cherry and currant.  The finish is pure and flavorful with notes of toasted oak, vanilla and butterscotch.  James Score: 89 Points

Domaine Montcy Red Blend 2015

Cheverny, France

Cash Price $16.99

Montcy is MY red wine for this summer season.  I love the clean, refreshing flavors and structured body that keeps my palate craving more.  This Domaine is located in a fairly unknown area in the Loire Valley, Cheverny, and focuses on high quality whites and reds on soils of clay and limestone.  The red wine is a blend of 50% Gamay, 45% Pinot Noir, and 5% Malbec.  I know….not typically grapes you see used in blends, but boy o boy this wine is delicious!  Bursting red fruit flavors of freshly picked bing cherries and raspberries sing into medium plus acidity and minimal tannins.  The wine is completely unoaked, instead choosing to focus on pinpoint red fruits with hints of spice.  The finish is silky and mouth watering with touches of white pepper, cranberry and violets.  James Score: 91 Points

Varichon & Clerc Blanc de Blanc N/V

France

Cash Price $12.99

Most of you that follow this blog know that I am a bubble head.  I like bubbles on days that end with ‘Y’.  That said, I constantly seeking value bubbles that over deliver for the price.  Varichon SCREAMS Value from start to finish.  The grapes are sourced from Jura and Savoie on the French/Swiss border.  The wine is produced in the Traditional Method (same way as Champagne) and has been since 1901!  The blend is Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Macabeu that shows a brilliantly elegant body is small, fine bubbles.  Flavors of apple, pear and melon combine with kisses of vanilla and toast.  The finish offers brioche and confection with pure, clean aftertaste.  Yummy!  James Score: 90 Points

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF MAY 2017

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I apologize for the tardiness of this email, but I have been extremely busy as of late.  I recently took on the role of managing the world’s finest varietal specific glassware, Riedel.  I just returned from a Riedel seminar led by none other than Mr. Georg Riedel himself.  We tried through numerous wines and glassware.  Every time, no matter Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, or Tequila the beverage always tasted better in the correct glass.  It was astounding!  If you want to make your wine taste better, you MUST have it in a Riedel Glass!  Email me if you have any questions.

Alexandre Bonnet Grande Reserve Brut N/V

Champagne, France

Cash Price $39.89 BUT ONLY

$35.89 with your Spec’s Key for a $4.00 SAVINGS!

I was able to taste this sparkling gem last week.  It is from the region of ‘Les Riceys’ in the Cote de Bar in Champagne.  This part of Champagne is not considered one of the ‘finer’ regions so its price point is more user friendly than its counterparts in Montagne de Reims.  This beauty is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay that is 100% hand harvested in the Cote de Bar.  Bonnet explodes on the palate with deliciously sexy notes of red roses and cherries that lay on a bed of fresh meadow flowers.  Lilacs lick the mid-mouthfeel with touches of citrus and key lime that are integrated into tightly woven bubbles.  The finish is clean and lingering with whiffs of brioche and hazelnuts.  Yummy!  James Score: 94 Points

La Meridiana ‘Terre Il Cielo’ Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2011

Piedmonte, Italy

Cash Price $36.99

I think that Barbera is the perfect summer red for the state of Texas.  It is extremely flavorful with higher acidity to quench your thirst without beating up your palate with tons of tannin that Cabernet Sauvignon often offers.  This 100% Barbera is one of the best I have tried in quite awhile.  Juicy and thirst quenching, Meridiana is like a TNT fruit bomb on your palate.  Flavors of blackberry and blueberry flow thickly on the palate with medium acidity and tannins that encompass the mouth feel.  Notes of wild berries and pomegranate flow through a medley of sweet spices like gingerbread and clove.  The finish is rich and voluptuous with notes of vanilla bean and hints of cedar.  James Score: 94 Points

Henri de Villamont ‘Les Champs-Claude’ Pinot Noir 2013

Santenay, France

Cash Price $29.99
Santenay is quickly becoming my ‘go to’ Pinot Noir region for great quality Burgundy without the crazy price points.  The Pinot’s from here are gorgeous with excellent balance and purity.  Henri Villamont’s wines can be often overlooked, but I have found consistency across the board with this Domaine.  The wine is 100% Pinot Noir and aged for 10 months in French oak.  Flavors of ripe red cherries and raspberries burst into the palate with medium plus acids and minimal tannins.  The mid palate offers silky complexity with just a hint of cream.  The finish is fresh and vibrant with kisses of minerality and cedar.  James Score: 91 Points

Domaine Seguinot-Bordet Chardonnay 2015

Chablis, France

Cash Price $19.94

I find that there is nothing finer in my glass on a scorching summer day than a refreshing Chablis.  Chardonnay from the upper reaches of Burgundy is some of the best expressions of terroir driven wine in the world.  The kimmeridgeon limestone in the area shines through in the wine with minimal use of oak.  Jean-Francois Bordet produces this gem that is perfect for the dog days of summer in Texas.  Flavors of lush green apple and citrus zing into medium plus acids with touches of chalky minerality.  Notes of ripe melon and lemon zest play through the mid palate with hints of butter and hazelnut.  The finish offers hints of cream laced with smidgeons of flint and wet stones.  This is definitely a riper style of Chablis, but does retain the acidity and minerality throughout.  James Score: 91 Points

Bacio Divino ‘Pazzo’ Red Blend 2014

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $25.99

I have had this wine for numerous vintages and have always been happy with the result.  I prefer this vintage (2014) more than any recent that I have tasted.  It is a Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is richly textured and firm from the start.  Consulting Wine Maker Kirk Venge is known for producing extracted wines with tons of fruit.  The crazy one (Pazzo) is jam packed full of sweet red fruits and hints of blueberry.  The acidity of Sangiovese is quite vibrant on the backbone with silky smooth tannins.  The finish is delivers a slew of complex flavors like black pepper, coffee bean, and mocha. This fruit forward offering is a perfect red that does not need to be paired with food to enjoy.  James Score: 92 Points

Ampelos Rose of Syrah 2016

Santa Ynez Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

This winery was the first in the United States to become certified Organic, Biodynamic, and Sustainable in Practice which makes them one of the purest wineries in the New World.  I have always been an advocate of this amazing winery.  Their Rose is one of my favorite New World Rose’s on the market.  This 80% Syrah/20% Grenache/5% Riesling Rose offers a decadent nose of perfumed red roses and wild white flowers.  The palate flows elegantly with ripe strawberry and candied cherries with medium acidity.  The mid palate offers rounded notes of peaches and cream that waft through the rich red fruits.  The finish is round and full with touches of cream and sweet red berries.  James Score: 90 Points

Jenner Pinot Noir 2013

Sonoma Coast, California

Cash Price $24.99

This is the 2nd wine of Fritz Cellars.  I typically look for Sonoma Coast Pinot’s when drinking California Pinot Noir due to their more elegant nature.  The 2013 vintage was a rather lush vintage with plenty of sunshine and ripeness of grapes.  Jenner shows the restraint of body, but allows for all the curves to show in the wine.  Sexy flavors of bing cherries and red raspberries flow seamlessly into the palate with medium acidity and light tannins.  The mid palate gives notes of molasses and cola with hints of sassafras that are encompassed into a cream smooth core.  The finish is light and delightful with a lingering sentiment.  James Score: 89 Points

Chateau Filet Red Blend 2013

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $16.99

The 2013 vintage was considered a ‘miss’ in Bordeaux.  That said,  I think you can find excellent value with these elegant wines.  The prices are moderately priced to move and the quality can often surprise.  This deliciously dry red blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.  Elegant flavors of black cherries and currant mold into medium tannins and medium plus acids.  The mid palate gives a touch of cream that is enveloped by an earthy minerality of graphite and green tea.  The finish is pure and balanced with notes of cedar, vanilla and clove.  James Score: 90 Points

Hart and McGarry Chardonnay 2014

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $15.99

It is not easy these days to find Napa Valley juice at this price point.  The price for grapes has been sky-rocketing most producers out of the market.  This wine continues its consistent price and value for Napa Valley year in and year out.  Flavors of juicy melons and pear lick into medium acidity.  Notes of pineapple and guava lay smoothly on a creamy core of vanilla and butter.  The finish is persistent and velvety.  James Score: 89 Points.

Hilt and Blade Red Blend 2013

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

Hilt and Blade sifts through the riff raff of California and finds quality micro climates to produce deliciously fruit forward styles of wine.  This Cabernet Sauvignon blend is jam packed full of red currant and cherries throughout the palate.  The mid mouth feel offers a soft jammy profile of raspberry cream pie with medium tannins and acids.  The finish is chalked full of oak with notes of cedar, vanilla, clove and spice.  James Score: 88 Points

Beppe Moscato d’Asti 2016

Piedmonte, Italy

Cash Price $14.99

Moscato is a perfect white wine for the screaming heat in Texas.  It is light & refreshing with touches of sparkle and sweetness.  This wine is unpretentious and begs to be enjoyed poolside or for summer parties.  Flavors of green apples and honey suckle flow through the palate with just a touch of effervescence that clean the palate.  Notes of white peach and nectarines frolic through the mid palate with hints of white flowers and sweet candied stone fruits.  The wine is lower in alcohol and meant to be a refreshingly fun wine.  James Score: 88 Points

Piattelli Malbec 2014

Luyan de Cuyo, Argentina

Cash Price $14.99

This Argentine winery is dedicated to quality and organic practices.  They avoid chemical fertilization and pesticides and strive for sustainability.  Located in the rocky soils of Tupungato in the lush Mendoza Valley, the Piattelli family immigrated here from Tuscany.  This 100% Malbec is rock solid.  Luyan de Cuyo produces some of the best Malbec in all Argentina.  Piattelli is a high altitude wine grown at 3,152 feet in elevation.  Robust flavors of black currant and blueberry hit the palate with all the beefy brawn that the variety often offers.  The structure is medium with silky tannins and easy acids that are surrounded by a core of dark chocolate and spice.  James Score: 90 Points

Chateau La Tour De Beraud White Blend 2015

Costieries de Nimes, France

Cash Price $11.99

As the heat rises, I start to seek out refreshing whites that over deliver for the price.  Beraud Blanc is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Marsanne that exudes tropical fruits of peach, orange blossoms and pineapple that play over a soft acidity.  The wine is un-oaked and packed full of deliciously refreshing fruit flavors.  The finish is persistent with kisses of grapefruit and honeysuckle.  James Score: 89 Points
