JAMES BARLOW’S ‘STEALS OF THE MONTH’ FOR MARCH 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

This time of the year is chalked full of great deals with the impending summer season. One can find great value that isn’t always available throughout the year.  I have focused on several wines that are an amazing value and should usually be at a higher price.  Enjoy!

Vallobera ‘Pago Malarina’ Tempranillo 2011

Rioja, Spain

Cash Price $9.99

Delicously rich red cherries and red berries sink into notes of vanilla and cedar.  The finish offers raspberry, currant, and cream. Full bodied and ready to drink!

Domaine de Cassagnole White Blend 2013

Gascogne, France

Cash Price $9.99

This is the best vintage that I have tasted from this winery. Ugni Blanc and Colombard blend that offers flavors citrus lemon, pineapple, and melon. No oak, with clean, zesty acids.

Aquilo Pinot Noir 2013

California

Cash Price $9.49

Silky smooth, Aquilo shows red cherries and raspberries with just a touch of red flowers.  Notes of vanilla, cream, and cola sit on a soft, yet lingering finish! Awesome Value Pinot!

‘JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF MARCH 2015

Hello Ladies and gentlemen,

Spring is right around the corner and winter is showing its last vestiges before it digresses for warmer weather.  This month I will be reviewing wines of different origins and flavor profiles throughout the world.  Wine making techniques are at the highest level that the world has ever seen and that is evident in the ensuing wines.  It is a perfect time to catch the wine ‘fever’ because of the high quality being produced all over the globe!  Enjoy!

Perrier Jouet Grand Brut N/V

Champagne, France

Cash Price $39.89

Perrier Jouet is one of the highest quality houses in all of Champagne.  This house prides itself on offering bubbles of harmony, finesse, and elegance.  The grand brut is every bit as good as the bigger houses of Moet and Chandon or Vueve Clicquot.  This wine has a higher amount of Pinot Meunier in the cepage (blend) which gives this wine a unique flavor profile that is quite delicious.  Jouet’s cepage is driven by Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier with Chardonnay rounding out the blend.  Delicate bubbles flow seamlessly through the palate with flavors of bright cherry, meadow flowers and honeysuckle.  The mid palate softens into a delicate core of Bosc pear and green apples with integrated acids.  It is the finish that takes this wine to the next level.  Notes of vanilla wafers and confection lay on hints of buttered pecan and hazelnuts that linger on the palate till the next sup.  SPECtacular bubbles!

Buoncristiani ‘OPC’ Red Blend 2010

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $47.49

The Buoncristiani Brothers were born and raised in Napa Valley.  Wine is in their blood.  They produce small quantities of very high quality wines that have always truly impressed me.  They strive to create optimum complexity while retaining balance and varietal character.  I like it when a winemaker blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.  Those two varietals make up a lion’s share of this blend with touches of Malbec and Merlot to finish up the cepage.  The grapes come from pedigreed sites such as the famed Stagecoach vineyard.  Silky rich flavors of jammy plum and black currant sinew through a thick, creamy mouth feel.  Medium tannins and acids lead into notes of vanilla, tobacco, and just a touch of smoked meat.  The finish shows off 20 months of French oak aging with hints of toasted oak, charcoal and cinnamon.  This wine is ridiculously sleek.  Wine Advocate gave this wine 92 points.  Limited availability!

Francois Labet Chardonnay

Pouilly Fuisse, France

Cash Price $27.99

Pouilly Fuisse is located in the Maconnais and is highly regarded for making value Chardonnay in Burgundy.  Prices inside the Cote D’Or region of Burgundy can become astronomical very quickly, so I often find myself purchasing wines in the southern portions of Burgundy.  Not far from the town of Chardonnay are where the vineyards are located.  What I enjoy most about the area is rare use of new oak as almost everyone ages their wines in either used oak barrels or (more often) stainless steel vats.  Labet offers flavors of fleshy green apples, citrus and melon.  The acids are well integrated but serve their purpose on the backbone.  The mid palate offers a minerality of crushed cobblestone with lemon lime zest.  The finish is chalked full of pear with smidgeons of white pepper, guava and just a touch of key lime pie. Excellently balanced Chardonnay.

Chateau Cote Montpezat ‘Cuvee Compostelle’ Red blend 2010

Cotes de Castillon, France

Cash price $22.99

The best Bordeaux values can typically be found in the Cotes de Bordeaux regions.  Castillion is on the right bank of Bordeaux and therefore a high volume of the wine is Merlot based.  Flavors of red cherries and plum play into medium plus tannins and medium acids. Notes of mouthwatering spices and herbs play through the mid palate. The finish is long and filled with hints of cedar, leather, and just a touch of licorice.  As is always evident, the 2010’s are stunning.  Wine Spectator gave this wine 90 points.

St. Michael Eppan Pinot Grigio 2013

Alto Adige, Italy

Cash price $16.99

Pinot Grigio has become one of the more popular white wines in the world, but did you know that the grape’s skin is actually blueish gray in color?  Much like in Chapagne’s Blanc de Noir style,  the varietal will not spend any time with the skins so the white juice does not retain any color.  Although its origins are most likely in Germany (called grauerburgunder) or Burgundy (called Fromenteau or Pinot Beurot), it has become most famous in Northeastern Italy.  It grows extremely well in the calcareous soils near the Tyrol.  St. Michael Eppan is based just south of Tyrol and is producing quality Pinot Grigio at a better price point than Santa Margherita.  Flavors of crisp lemon lime and green apples zing through pinpoint acids.  Notes of hay and citrus continue through the mid palate with a touch of wet stone minerality.  The finish offer a hint of meadow flowers and a touch of candied peach.  A Must Try!

Osso Anna Merlot 2012

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $19.94

The Buoncristiani families 2nd tier label is Osso Anna.  This wine is a classic representation of Merlot.  The varietal is often overlooked due to its huge success during the 1980’s which caused a glut of cheap, flavorless wine to flood the market and kill its reputation.  Merlot is finally making a resurgence and the Buocristiani Brothers are showing why we should drink this age worthy varietal again.  Flavors of baked plums and boysenberry  sink through medium tannins and acids.  Notes of violets and black cherries are pure and rich throughout the mid palate with touches of black raspberry.  The finish is silky with smidgeons of cedar, cinnamon and vanilla. Fall in love with Merlot all over again!

Sonoma Highway Pinot Noir 2012

Sonoma, California

Cash Price $17.99

Talented Wine maker Michael Sebastiani (Yes, that Sebastiani family) is the genius behind this delicious Pinot Noir.  He was intent on producing a juicy, fruit forward style of wine and knocked it out of the park with Sonoma Highway.  The fruit comes from vines that are adjacent to the famed Gap’s Crown vineyard.  Flavors of raspberry and bing cherries sink into plush acids and a cream filled core.  Soft tannins integrate deftly throughout the notes if red currant and cola.  The finish is rich and stuffed with vanilla bean and cinnamon spice from aging in French Oak.  Sonoma Highway is built to be a crowd pleaser!

Guicciardino Strozzi Sangiovese 2012

Chianti (Colli Senesi), Italy

Cash Price $17.99

The history behind these families and this winery is almost unbelievable.  Francesco Guicciardini was a political figure for whom Machiavelli was a secretary for as well as being a historian and philosopher.   The Strozzi family has ties to the actual Mona Lisa (Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo).  Prince Girolamo Strozzi has run the estate and his princesses were recently in town showing off the wine.  The estate in San Gimignano, Villa Cusano, can boast over a thousand years of history!  The wine shows flavors of freshly picked picked strawberries and tart red cherries.  Notes of tomato and thyme play through the mid palate with med plus acids and medium tannins.  Hints of black pepper and sage are noticeable on the un-oaked finish.  This is a perfect pizza wine!

Felipe Rutini Coleccion Malbec 2012

Mendoza, Argentina

Cash Price $18.99

I was really pleased when Felipe Rutini came back into the market.  I have always enjoyed their wines, especially for the price point.  This 100% Malbec is rock solid.  The wine is aged for twelve months on French and American oak.  Rutini offers flavors of blackberry and cassis that move quickly into mocha and coffee beans. The mid palate gives a creamy core with notes of toasted fig and almonds with medium acids and tannins.  The finale shows touches of black pepper, vanilla and oak.  This wine is worth every penny!

Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Western Cape, South Africa

Cash Price $12.99

Mulderbosch is widely considered one of the best wineries in South Africa.  Sauvignon Blanc is what they have become famous for with wine guide author John Platter referring to it as ‘South Africa’s most celebrated Sauvignon.  This 100% Sauvignon Blanc never touches oak and is known for its crisp, refreshing appeal.  Delicious flavors of grapefruit and lemon lime zest zing through the palate with medium plus acids.  A wet stone minerality is prevalent on the mid palate.  Touches of honesuckle and green figs flow into a clean, persistent finish.  A Sauvignon Blanc lovers dream!

Highway 12 Red Blend 2012

Sonoma, California

Cash Price $14.99

The Highway 12 line is also produced Michael Sebastiani.  This Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet blend is a true value for the daily wine drinker.  The 2012 vintage is turning out to be one of the best vintages of this decade with a bountiful harvest and perfect growing conditions.  The wine from  this vintage does have a touch of sweet fruit that was absent from the 2011 vintage.  This wine exudes flavors of black cherry, plum, and black currant that flow through the core of this wine with medium acids and tannins.  Notes of tobacco and cedar play into the mid palate with silky tannins.  The finish is velvety with soft notes of vanilla bean and milk chocolate.  Awesome BBQ wine for the Rodeo!

Cuesta Amontillado Medium Dry Sherry

Jerez, Spain

Cash Price $12.99

Medium Dry Sherry is one of the finest aperitifs that no one is talking about. The fortified wine is quite light and refreshing with a touch of salinity on the nose.  Amontillado is considered a step between Fino (dry) and oloroso (typically sweet).  It is produced from 95% Palomino and 5% Pedro Ximinez.  Flavors of nuts and raisins sink into a touch of  salted caramel.  The wine is soft, yet plush in the mouth feel with hints of hazelnut and just a touch of citrus.  A great way to start the evening!

Arrowflite Chardonnay 2013

Sonoma Coast, Calimfornia

Cash Price $12.99

This Chardonnay is built to go against the likes of Kendal Jackson and La Crema Chardonnay.  Rich and creamy, this wine offers flavors of pineapple and melon that quickly turns into a hedonistic creamy texture.  Notes of brioche and buttered popcorn seep into medium minus acids.  The finish is soft, offering butter and caramel with just a touch of citrus.  Hedonistic Chardonnay!

Williams Selyem Russian River Pinot Noir 2012
Cash Price 84.99 but Spec’s Key $11.43 discount
Final Cash Price $73.56
56 bottles available

Winemaker’s Notes

The 14-year-old Drake Estate Vineyard provides Williams-Selyem with the majority of fruit for this flagship blend, which is crafted with primarily Pommard selections and then layered with Heritage clones like Swan, Mt. Eden, Martini and Wente. The nuances of blackberries, ripe cherries, Italian plums, Shitake mushrooms and crème brûlée fill your glass. The opulent and rich tannins are emphasized by the dark berry fruits and complement the lengthy, velvety and unctuous finish. These focused dark fruits and cherry cola flavors truly highlight the unique terrior expressions of the Russian River Valley. Very age worthy

Critical Acclaim

  • WE92
Wine Enthusiast“Showing impeccable elegance, this is totally dry and tart in acidity, with a quietly tannic astringency that suggests pairing with lamb or steak. While it’s not an ager, the cola, pomegranate, cherry and mushroom flavors are classic and complex. “
  • ST91
International Wine Cellar“Bright ruby-red. Highly perfumed aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri and minerals, with a hint of smokiness in the background. On the palate, intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are lifted by tangy acidity and a hint of white pepper. Very precise pinot with strong finishing lift and cut and mineral-driven persistence. Quite nervy, in a style that reminds me a lot of the Sonoma Coast. “

Williams Selyem Westside Road Pinot Noir 2012
Cash Price 109.99 but Spec’s Key $14.00 discount
Final Cash Price $95.99
5 bottles available

Winemaker’s Notes

This wine is crafted from the finest growers along Westside Road – Allen, Bacigalupi, Bucher, Rochioli Riverblock and the Williams Selyem Estate. The brilliant, red color is simply captivating. Floral notes of red rose and crushed rocks permeate the nose. The glass fills with red fruit driven by notes of cranberry, fresh strawberries and raspberries. With some air, deeper pitched aromas of Morello cherry penetrate the alluring aromatic profile. The nutmeg and allspice give way to a mineral-like finish, which is complemented by subtle vanilla flavors. The vivacious acids and long rich finish balance out this wine for cellar longevity.

Critical Acclaim

  • WE94
Wine Enthusiast“The wine is always a blend of the winery’s best vineyards in the northern, warm section of the valley, including Allen, Rochioli Riverblock and Williams Selyem’s Estate. The 2012 is dry, tannic, delicately structured and mouthwateringly tart, with cranberry, raspberry, cherry, sandalwood and dried herb flavors. Enjoy it now and through 2018. “
  • ST92
International Wine Cellar“Dark ruby. Pungent smoke- and spice-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry-cola and zesty minerals. Offers vibrant red fruit and candied rose flavors, with a touch of bitter blood orange adding focus and grip. Shows the urgency of a cooler vintage but with the depth of fruit one expects from wines made from this area. Finishes silky and long, with resonating minerality and excellent spicy persistence.”

Williams Selyem Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2012
Cash Price $71.59 but Spec’s Key $16.56 discount
Final Cash Price 55.03
16 bottles available

The nose is very floral at first with a beautiful lilac aroma and leads into strawberry and Montgomery cherry notes. The wine is beautifully framed with allspice and vanilla. Hints of freshly cut tarragon add a savory complexity to this delicious offering. The palate leads with strawberry and cherry notes and the juicy acidity seems to carry the wine and close with a silky finish. Overall, it is very round and unctuous in the mouth. An amalgam of younger vineyards from the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast, primarily Pommard and Dijon clones, this wine shows the true diversity of Sonoma County. The long texture finishes with a kiss of cherry fruit and mouthwatering acidity.

Critical Acclaim

  • ST90
International Wine Cellar“Bright ruby. Powerful cherry and blackberry scents are energized by tangy acidity and a smoky mineral quality. At once rich and lively on the palate, offering sweet dark berry flavors and a touch of licorice. In a weighty, rather masculine style for this producer, with a note of cola building on the youthfully tannic finish. “
Williams Selyem Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2012
Cash Price $84.99 but Spec’s Key $12.48
Final Cash Price $72.51
21 bottles available

Winemaker’s Notes

The Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir aroma seems to jump from the glass with wild berry notes of alpine strawberry, blackberry, and subtle hints of blueberry and pomegranate. These fruit elements marry extremely well with the deeper bass notes and complement the oak spices and hints of grilled herbs. The palate is equally matched with a depth in complexity that rivals the aroma. The wild berry fruit profile gives way to a vibrant acidity and a wonderfully integrated tannin profile with a surprisingly delicate floral lift on the finish. The bright Sonoma Coast acidity is balanced by the velvety, rich finish. The 2012 Sonoma Coast would be the perfect accompaniment to a grilled squab or grilled saddle of rabbit.

Critical Acclaim

  • ST91
International Wine Cellar“Bright ruby-red. Mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berries on the nose and in the mouth, with a suave floral nuance coming up with air. Silky and precise initially, then more structured in the mid-palate, with a note of bitter cherry emerging. Finishes with repeating minerality, fine-grained, gripping tannins and excellent energy and length.”
Williams Selyem Central Coast Pinot Noir 2012
Cash Price $75.99 but Spec’s Key $16.56 discount
Final Cash Price $59.43
14 bottles available
Winemaker’s NotesThis wine has a fresh, perfumed nose of spice, floral components and dark cherries. As it opens up in the glass, there is a bright, red fruit nose with a hint of earth, nutmeg, fennel and toffee, which are characteristic of this vineyard site. Luscious flavors of dark cherries, strawberry, sassafras, violets and caramel give way to the poised acidity. Elements of cedar, baking spices and vanilla add to the complexity. The rich, textural mouthfeel helps to carry the fat, plump tannins that follow long through into the finish.

The Vineyards

100% of this wine is comprised of fruit from the Vista Verde Vineyard, located a couple miles south-east of Hollister, California, near the small town of Tres Pinos in San Benito County. This heavy limestone vineyard is separated into nine blocks that include clones such as Pommard, Calera, Canada, 667, Mt. Eden, and Swan.

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘THE THIRTEEN’ PICKS OF FEBRUARY 2015

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

The first month of the year is in the books and ‘The Thirteen’ picks are off to a record start for the year.  Thank you everyone! Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching, so I will save all of the gentlemen some headaches by reviewing several selections of sparkling wines that your loved one is sure to enjoy with the ensuing chocolates and goodies.  I am also reviewing a slew of other selections from France, Argentina, Italy, Australia, South Africa, and, of Course, California.  Enjoy!

O. Fournier ‘Alpha Crux’ Malbec 2010

Mendoza, Argentina

Cash Price $44.99

O. Fournier makes wines around the world, but have really found a niche in South America.  The Alpha Crux name and label is based on the stars of the Southern Cross, which is a constellation only visible in the Southern hemisphere.  The Mocovi Indians from Argentina captured the symbol of the ostrich, which symbolizes the joining of the earth and the sky, through paintings in the caves they inhabited and tales spun through the sands of time.  This unfiltered Malbec is pure and plush from the first sup.  Flavors of intense dark plum lift off into the palate with blackberry and dark currant following through the mid mouth feel.  Medium tannins and acids give this wine backbone and balance with 80% French and 20% American oak aging for 20 months.  Notes of roasted meat, toasted oak and a touch of peppercorn are encompassed by a plush richness that gives the wine an intensity of flavor while seducing the palate with its velvet complexity.  The finish offers creamy vanilla, graham crackers, and just a touch of all spice.  Wine Spectator gave this wine 94 points and was#25 on the ‘Top 100’ wines of 2014.  Wine Advocate scored it with 93 points.  Limited Availability!

Chateau Bouscasse Tannat 2009

Madiran, France

Cash Price $26.99

Madiran is the home of the geeky grape Tannat in the foothills of the Pyrenees, just south of Bordeaux.  Tannat is an intense grape with naturally high acidity and broad tannins, with a deep, rich character that grows well in the limestone and clay soils of Madiran.  This wine is primarily Tannat based, with smidgeons of Cabernet and Cabernet Franc to add complexity and depth.  Bouscasse owner, Alain Brumont was awarded ‘Producer of the Year’ in 2010.  Bouscasse is unfiltered with malolactic fermentation being completed in barrel.    Flavors of dark black currant and blackberry sing through ripe, yet integrated tannins and acids.    Notes of plum and black pepper race through the mid palate with a rustic terroir that leaves the palate begging for more.  Brumont prefers to let this brawny black grape offer its  natural characteristics , while allowing the finesse rise forward in the wine to give a silky  mouth feel. The finish is round and supple with hints of cream and truffles.  Great Food Wine!

Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs N/V

Carneros, California

Cash Price $15.89

Gloria Ferrer is producing some of the best priced sparkling wines in the United States.  I prefer Blanc de Noir, which means they use mainly red grapes in the cepage to make a white wine, because it gives the aromatics of red grapes without the heavy mouth feel.  This wine is 92% Pinot Noir and 8% Chardonnay.  Blanc de Noir sometimes shows just a hint of color, giving the wine a salmon tint.  This delicious bubbly is divine with crisp, tight bubbles.  Flavors of sweet red cherries and raspberry flow cleanly through the palate with notes of brioche and confection.  Hints of butter and almonds show on the finish with tinges of creamy vanilla and rose petals.  Wine Enthusiast gave this wine 90 points.  It is a sure hit for your significant other on your special day!

Consilience Syrah 2012

Santa Barbara, California

Cash Price $18.99

Syrah is finally finding its home in the heart of the American wine drinker.  Sommeliers and critics alike have vaunted this grape into the ‘darling’ category, yet traction for the grape has been gradual.  I have noticed an intense spike in sales in the past year with Syrah and I couldn’t be happier.  American Syrah is some of the best wine produced in the entire world.  Consilience comes from Santa Barbara which is a hot bed for intense, richly concentrated Syrah.  Bill and Jan Sanger created this brand to focus on Rhone varietal that grow so well in the central coast.  Thick, rich flavors of boysenberry and black raspberry jump in a creamy core of dark chocolate and cassis.  The mid palate is soft and plush with medium tannins and acids that sink into touches of kitchen spices.  The finish is silky with notes of black cherry that sinew through touches of toasted oak, molasses and caramel.  Consilience is a great way to fall in love with Syrah!

Meerlust Merlot 2007

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Cash Price $25.89

Meerlust is undoubtedly one of the highest quality wineries in all of South Africa.  They produce Iconic wines that are age worthy and classic.  This wine is tailor made for a big slab of meat roasted in a peppercorn rub and a plate of vegetables.  Flavors of red currant and wild berries are eloquently pronounced through medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Notes of green and black pepper lick easily through the minerality with hints of dark mocha and stewed plums.  Meerlust Merlot is well structured with age worthy quality, but is showing hues of brick color, which lead me to believe this wine will be peaking within the next couple of years.  Perfect Rodeo Rib Wine!

Calcareous ‘Twisted Paso’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Paso Robles, California

Cash Price $17.99

The Calcareous ‘Twisted Paso’ (formerly Twisted Sister) line has become one of the best selling wine selections in Spec’s entire portfolio.  They produce a wine with silky smooth approachability that is heaven on the palate.  Lush flavors of blackberry and currant flow seamlessly through the palate with licks of milk chocolate and cedar.  The mid palate give medium tannins and acids that are soft and integrated.  The core offers creamy blueberry with notes of leather and cigar box.  The finish offers hints of graham cracker and toasted oak with smidgeons of vanilla and cinnamon.  Awesome Value Cab!

D’Arenberg ‘Footbolt’ Old Vine Shiraz 2011

McLaren Vale, Australia

Cash Price $17.19

D’Arenberg has consistently been one of my favorite Aussie wineries for years under the loving care of their eccentric wine maker Chester Osborn.  The Footbolt name comes from the thoroughbred racehorse and stable that founder Joseph Osbourn decided to sell to start his winery.  This wine is his homage to that history.  Footbolt offers restraint that I prefer in wines from Australia.  Flavors of  fleshy mulberry, black plum, and wild cherries jump off the palate with vibrant acids and medium tannins.  Notes of baking spices dance sprightly through the outer palate with touches of mineral and black pepper.  The finish is structured with licks of creamy vanilla bean and charred oak, from 12 months of aging in new and used barrel, that sit on the palate for a good long time.  Try the Consilience and Footbolt side by side and compare the contrasting styles!

Villa Rogole Fiorosa’ Brachetto N/V

Piedmonte, Italy

Cash Price $13.99 BUT $4.00 SAVINGS WITH YOUR SPEC’S KEY FOR A LIMITED TIME!

ONLY $9.99

Brachetto is perfectly suited for Valentine’s Day.  It is fully sparkling and deliciously sweet red wine.  Banfi’s Rosa Regale brought this grape into popularity and it has become a staple for the upcoming holiday.  Villa Rogole is of the same ilk and offers light alcohol with refreshingly fun bubbles.  Flavors of ripe red strawberries and cherries dance melodically through the palate with effortless ease.  Bubbles weave through licks of rose petals and soft strokes of sweetness.  The finish is supple and inviting.  Find love with your love for Valentine’s Day with Fiorosa!

Trig Point ‘Diamond Dust’  Merlot 2013

Alexander Valley, California

Cash Price $15.99

Nick Goldschmidt is one of my favorite wine makers.  He consistently crafts wines of high quality in different climates and even hemispheres.  His father was a land surveyor and a ‘Trig’ is used to establish boundary lines.  Goldschmidt’s Trig Point wines show the unique soils of the area he gets the grapes from, namely Alexander Valley.  The vineyard is located on the southern (and cooler) end of Alexander Valley which makes it prime territory for producing low yield, high quality Merlot.  Flavors of intense black cherry and blackberry jump into zesty acids and well rounded tannins.  Notes of raspberry and freshly picked plum meld into the core of the wine with touches of graphite and dusty minerality.  The finish is dangerously long with 12 months of French oak aging in 20% new barrels and just a touch of new American oak which gives hints of creamy vanilla bean, cinnamon, and cedar.  The finish smacks of blueberry pie!

Chateau Le Conseiller Red Blend 2010

Bordeaux, France

Cash Price $19.94

This offering from famed Wine maker Jean Philippe Janoueix is brilliant.  Conseiller is one of Bordeaux’s best offerings for the price point and in one of the best vintages in recent history.  The wine is a no brainer for Old World lovers.  Flavors of blackberry and cassis layer into graphite and dense minerality.  The wines has medium plus tannins and acid which make it age worthy, but Janoueix makes his wines quite accessible in their youth.  The mid palate softens into touches of cream and currant with touches of iron.  The finish is complex and well balanced with notes of cedar, leather, and tobacco.  This Wine Rocks!  Wine Advocate scored this wine 90 points.  Great Rating at a Great Price!

Les Tuiles Chardonnay 2013

Macon, France

Cash Price $11.89

I have a true love for Chardonnay, especially the un oaked style.  I enjoy the ripe deliciously fresh fruit that this wine offers.  Vibrant flavors of fresh yellow apples and meyer lemon citrus zing through clean acids.  Fleshy pear and pineapple lead the mid palate with touches of crushed wet rocks.  The finish offers a soft, creamy texture that is a perfect ending for this wine.  Fresh and Un Oaked!

Dauvergne Ranvier ‘Vin Gourmand’  Red Blend 2013

Luberon, France

Cash Price $12.19

Jean-Francois Ranvier and Francois Dauvergne are the masterminds behind the various Rhone Valley wines from this winery.  This southern Rhone, Grenache based red offers silky finesse that Luberon wines have become known for on the clay and limestone soils near the Mediterranean.   Gourmand offers flavors of red currant and red cherries mingled with wild red berries.  Notes of garrigue are evident throughout with tinges of basil and thyme.  Plum is prevalent in the mid palate with medium tannins and acids.  The finish is smooth and user friendly.  Some of the best priced value red wines in the world come from the Southern Rhone.  Great Daily Red!

Peirano ‘Immortal’ Old Vine Zinfandel 2012

Lodi, California

Cash Price $11.99

Peirano Zinfandel is an estate grown wine developed in a vintage that was perfect for making spectacular Zinfandel.  So, when 113 year old vines in a perfect vintage are harvested, you get something special in the bottle.  Fermented to dryness, this Immortal wine exudes flavors of rhubarb, bramble, and black cherry that zing through the palate.  The mid palate shows hints of strawberry and juicy red fruits with notes of spice and roasted meat through medium tannins and medium minus acids.  The finish is lengthy and begs for some brisket!  A Zin to Remember!

Duoro, Portugal

Cash Price $31.99

I really enjoy Colheita Port in the winter.  Lightly sweet, well matured wines can be the perfect way to end an evening.  Portugese wines have exploded this past year in the world of wine with Wine Spectator leading the way by making its top pick of the year a Port.  Kopke is the original Port house and was founded in 1638 by the German born Cristiano Kopke.  The house produces predominantly Tawny Ports, specializing in Colheita, with stock dating back 100 years.  Colheita wines are tawny Ports that are vintage dated and at least seven years old.  Since they are already fortified and usually quite oxidized, these wines will last a good month after opening.  So no need to rush through the bottle, in fact I prefer to have a small glass after dinner throughout the month.  This wine offers matured flavors of red currant and cherries with silky tannins that soften through out the mouth feel.  Notes of vanilla, potpourri and brown sugar dance deftly through dried figs and apricots.  The finish is supple and plentiful.  Fall in love with Port this winter!

Guardian Peak ‘Lapa’ Cabernet 2009

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Cash Price $34.99

I think that South Africa quietly makes some of the best wines on Earth.  They can produce New World style wines with a genuine expression of terroir.  Lapa is one of the better Cabs that I have had from Stellenbosch.  The grapes come from the northern slopes of Helderberg Mountain which allows for maximum sun exposure for the grapes with the cool breezes from the Atlantic Ocean cooling off the grapes in the summer.  Guardian Peak shows dark, opaque fruits of cassis and blackberry that are encompassed by a radiance of eighteen month of French oak aging.  Notes of graphite and pencil shavings lead into of Framboise and dark wild berries.  The tannins are medium bodied and well integrated with medium acids.  The finish is long and powerful.  This is an amazing Cabernet!

Chateau Bernadotte 2006

Haut Medoc, France

Cash Price $25.99 but only

$23.49 with your Spec’s Key for a limited time!

I have found some of the best value wines in the 2006 vintage from the Haut Medoc.  It followed the monster vintage of 2005, so it was largely overlooked albeit an outstanding harvest.  This wine is produced by the same team that makes the highly acclaimed Pichon Lalande.  Bernadotte went through a ‘closed’ phase, but is starting to hit its stride right now.  Classic Bordeaux with flavors of red currant with medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Notes of black cherry and cranberry sink into the mid palate with hints of graphite and vanillin.  The finish offers bits of bay leaf and toasted cedar with just a touch of kitchen spice.  Great Value Bordeaux!

Feudo Di San Nicola Negroamaro 2010

Puglia, Italy

Cash Price $17.99

Negroamaro is the signature grape of Puglia and is often blended with Primitivo (Zinfandel) to make a rich, juicy style of red blend.  The grape makes a full bodied wine with fruits that are on the baked side due to the hot flatlands of Puglia.  Thick and racy, this wine exudes flavors of stewed plums and fig with tinges of cinnamon sticks on the mid palate.  Dried morello cherries lead into hints of licorice and molasses.  Nicola has medium tannins and medium plus acids.  The finish has touches of oak with a nice dollop of alcohol on the finish.  Negroamaro would pair nicely with a hearty meat dish or a nice Cuban cigar!

Crossos Garnacha blend 2011

Priorat, Spain

Cash Price $14.99

It is tough to find a Priorat wine for under $20, so I am particularly excited when I find one that is stunning like the Crossos red blend.  The wine is predominantly Garnacha based, but does have Cabernet and Samso to add structure and depth.  Crossos shows flavors of intense red cherries and plums that play into hints of black slate and black pepper.  The wine is full bodied and fat, but with excellent structure throughout the core.  The finish gives fleshy pomegranate and tinges of over ripe raspberry and scorched earth.  Excellent Value Wine!

Aria Brut Sparkling N/V

Cava, Spain

Cash Price $14.99

Segura Viudas is the producer for this great sparkling brand.  This house is considered one of the finest in Cava and was given the high accolade of ‘Value Brand of the Year’ in 2013 by Wine & Spirits magazine.  I have figured out what the best time to have bubbles. Any time, anywhere is the answer.  Cava offers great value as it is produced the same way as Champagne, but at a margin of the price.  Crisp and clean, this sparkler exudes flavors of citrus and green apple with tight, refreshing bubbles.  The mid palate gives hints of jasmine and white flowers with touches of pear and almond.  The finish is vibrant and inviting with tinges of fresh dough and confection.  Bubbles are for all occasions!

Chateau De Lancyre ‘Coste D’Aleyrac’ Red Blend 2009

Pic Saint Loup, France

Cash Price $18.99

The Languedoc is one of the premier value wine regions in the world.  Grenache and Syrah are typically king in this land with other role playing grapes.  Such is the blend of this wine.  50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Carignan give this sustainably farmed wine excellent character.  Lancyre has some of the oldest Syrah vineyards in the region which has given this winery a reputation as one of the top in the district.  Ripe flavors of wild red berries and cherry abound through zippy acids and garrigue.  The wine is un-oaked and ready to drink for the first sup.  Notes of fresh strawberry and raspberry play into medium tannins.  Lancyre is juicy and drinking beautifully right now!  A Must Try!

Cuesta Pedro Ximinez Sherry

El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain

Cash Price $12.99

Pedro Ximinez (better known as PX) is a grape that is used for producing sweeter styles of Sherry.  Cuesta is owned by the famed Lustau Sherry house.  This delicious gem is sweet, but not cloyingly so.  It is aged for a minimum of ten years, which is really prevalent on the baked, aged nose.  Flavors of raisins and brown sugar start the complex profile with almonds and hazelnuts seeping through the mid palate.  Notes of all spice and dried dates sit on the delightfully textured mouth feel. The finish is lingering and shows hints of honey, toffee, and graham crackers.  Excellent flavor profile for the price.  Try this with chocolate and fall in love!

Chateau Ampelia Red Blend 2007

Cotes de Castillon, France

Cash Price $17.49

Castillon borders St. Emilion on the right bank of the Garonne River.  The region is primarily devoted to Merlot and is considered the value version of the right bank.  This wine is 95% Merlot with the remainder being Cabernet Franc.  Ampelia is medium bodied and peaking right now.   Flavors of blueberry and black currant flow seamlessly through medium tannins and acids.  Notes of cedar and vanilla play through the finish with tinges of plum.   Ampelia is tailor made for a thick steak and always give a Bordeaux wine its proper due by decanting it for awhile.

Dr. Frank Semi-Dry Riesling 2011

Finger Lakes, New York

Cash Price $14.39

Konstantin Frank is producing some of the best wines in New York and are, in fact, the first to successfully implement vitis vinifera into New York.  Riesling is a specialty for this winery and their semi dry version is absolutely stunning!  This lightly off dry wine offers flavors orange blossom, green apples with tinges of ripe pear that balance effortlessly through the palate.  The wine is un-oaked and has medium plus acidity that is tamed by the licks of sweetness.  The finish offers notes of honeysuckle and wild meadow flowers combined with hints of wet rock minerality.  Dr. Frank is one of the best Riesling producers in the New World.

Shannon Ridge Cabernet 2012

Lake County, California

Cash Price $12.99

This winery recently received the accolade of ‘Best Winery’ at the Houston Rodeo Uncorked! Wine Competition.  They are located in the steep mountain slopes of Lake County and are dedicated to producing high quality, sustainably farmed wines at a great price.  This high elevation Cabernet is dangerously approachable from the first pop of the cork.  Supple flavors of black cherries and dark berries are encompassed by smooth, easy tannins and well balanced acids. The core offers notes of raspberry, plum and tobacco.  The finish is silky with touches of vanilla, all spice and licks of cedar.  Spectacular wine under $15!

Erik Banti ‘Carato’ Red 2010

Tuscany, Italy

Cash Price $11.99

It is a great time to be drinking Italian wine.  The wines are more approachable and fruit forward as they have ever been and the value wine category has seen a big jump in quality.  This delicious offering is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot, and 5% Syrah.  The wine is medium bodied, but with a fleshy structure that gives it plenty of meat on the bones with fruit pouring into the palate from all angles.  Voluptuous flavors of bing cherries and cranberries lead from the palate with zesty, yet tame acids and medium tannins.  Vibrant notes of ripe tomatoes and hints of black pepper make this wine a perfect pairing for a pizza with all the toppings!  The finish shows notes of toasted oak with hints of vanilla bean and hazelnut.  Carato Red is an outstanding value and a sure fire pick as your new ‘Tuesday’ night wine!

Peirano ‘The Other’ Red Blend 2011

Lodi, California

Cash Price $11.99

The Other Red has a lot going for it besides its catchy labeling.  This wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 40% Merlot, and  10% Syrah.  Peirano offers flavors of sweet black cherries and blackberries with a ripe core of seductive fruit.  Notes of boysenberry and plum play through the mid palate with medium tannins and acids.  The finish is soft and playful with hints of graham cracker, cedar and just a touch of smoke.  The wine is easily paired , but is meant for a nice relaxing evening or an in house date night.

Hello Everyone,

I have found an error in my article that should be corrected.

The wine maker for the hedonistic, Robert Parker loving Tetra Red Blend 2009 is Patrick Mahaney.

Sometimes I should not be writing at 3am….I apologize for the error.

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘TOP PICKS’ OF 2014

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is the time of the year when I pour over notes on the thousands of wines that I have tried the past year to find the best wines that have passed through my palate.  I compile them and offer you a chance to taste what I thought were the highest quality wines that were offered to me this year.  Wines from France and California dominate this year’s list with a smattering of South Africa, Italy, and Germany.  This list is in no particular order except for my TOP PICK OF THE YEAR, which is at the bottom of this blog.  Thank you ever so much for being a part of this blog and allowing me to guide you through the flavorful world of wine.  Enjoy and Merry Christmas!!!

Domaine Pegau Red Blend 2008

Chateauneuf du Pape,  France

Cash Price $90.99

Pegau is a highly acclaimed, organic producer in one of my favorite regions, the Rhone Valley.  Laurence Feraud is a brilliant wine maker that molds wines of massive structure, yet with an elegant mouth feel.  The wine is 80% Grenache with bits of Syrah and Mourvedre that are all hand picked.  This wine is traditional in style with flavors of black berry, stewed black cherry, and ripe currant.  The mid palate has medium plus tannins and medium tannins.  Notes of fig and briar waft through dark notes of tar, espresso, and molasses.  The finish is long lasting with hints of truffle, cocoa, and baking spices.  Pegau is a classic producer that over achieved with this dynamic and exquisite gem.

Francois Mikulski ‘Limozin’ Chardonnay 2011

Meursault, France

Cash Price $84.99

Francois Mikulski has been producing high quality Meursault since 1992.  The vineyards are low yielding and the crushed grapes start fermentation with natural yeast which gives the wine the unique flavor profile of Meursault.  I decided to make this a year of Burgundy for me as I sought to try as much red and white from this iconic region as I could get my hands on.  This estate bottled wine is aged for twelve months on new and used French oak.  Divine flavors of baked green apples and melon flow into light nuances nectarine and citrus blossom.  The mid palate offers creamy oak complexity combined with nutty notes of lees aging.  The core of the wine is quite opulent with a creamy richness that is restrained nicely with a backbone of acidity.  The finish is shows hints of butter and toffee that are balanced by a minerality of crushed wet stones.  Exquisite Chardonnay!

Illuminati ‘Zanna’  Reserva Montepulciano Colline Teramane DOCG 2008

Abruzzo, Italy

Cash Price $38.94

The best expression of Montepulciano comes from the DOCG region of Colline Teramane.  I often akin this grape to the flavor profile of Cabernet Sauvignon.  It has massive structure with full tannins and acids that are helped with oak aging.  Illuminati is family owned and beginning to garner accolades from around the world.  This is causing a buzz in the wine world as wine critics are beginning to make Montepulciano the next ‘darling’ grape.  I am proud to say that I have been an advocate of this varietal and region for many years now (Marramiero’s Inferi Montepulicano 2007 was my Top Pick of 2011).   I have found this winery to over deliver on the price point and Wine Advocate agrees with 4 straight years of 90+ ratings.  Zanna offers flavors of black plum and blue berry are integrated in medium plus tannins and medium acids.  Notes of dried herbs and garrigue move deftly through the palate with touches of dried fig and nutmeg.  The finish shows notes of currant with tinges of crushed coffee beans and smoke.  Oak is present but not overtly and adds a textural mouth feel.  This is a great meal wine!

Tetra Red Blend 2009

Napa Valley, California

Cash Price $56.99

Tetra is comprised of four ‘noble’ Bordeaux varietals grown in four distinct vineyards in Napa Valley.  This Cabernet Sauvignon based red was meticulously crafted by Richard Sowalsky.  The grapes are sourced from Broken Rock, Coombsville, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Suscol Bench.  Rich and full bodied, Tetra exudes brilliance from start to finish.  The opulent 2009 vintage really shows in the fruit structure of the wine.  Flavors of black cherry and raspberry combine with layers of ripe fruit and dense tannins.  The wine is deliciously complex and continues to unfold in the glass.  Notes of fresh leather and mocha sinew through hints of cedar, vanilla, and milk chocolate.  Tetra is fabulously constructed!

Robert Weil ‘Traditional’ Riesling 2011

Rheingau, Germany

Cash Price $19.94

Robert Weil is considered one of the best in all of Germany, and I am quite excited to be able to offer you this excellent Riesling!  As you know, I recently visited Germany and found some excellent Dry and off Dry Riesling that exuded excellence from start to finish.  This winery is located in Kiedrich and produces wine from one of Germany’s best vineyards, Kiedrich Grafenberg.  In fact, Robert Weil was focused by Wine and Spirits magazine as a ‘Top 100 Winery’ in 2012 and 2013.  This wine is truly a delight.  It is off dry with just a hint of residual sugar that is easily integrated into the dynamic minerality that soaks into the palate.  Flavors of fresh green apples and stone fruits play into sleek acids and licks of honey dew.  Notes of jasmine and white plum sink into wet pebbles with just a touch of peach. This wine displays a true complexity that keeps the palate begging for more!

Chateau La Confession Red Blend 2006

St. Emilion, France

Cash Price $50.99

I re-tasted this gem several months ago and was astounded at how well it was drinking.  The 2006 vintage is often over looked because of the massive commercial outpouring of the 2005 vintage.  I have found many wines in this vintage that I would consider ‘steals’ because of the price point.  Jean Philippe Janoueix, former assistant to Michel Rolland, is making some of the best Right Bank wines in all of Bordeaux.  This St. Emilion Red is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and just a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon The wine is unfined and unfiltered.  The fruits are offering baked plum, stewed black berry and cassis.  The mid palate is beautifully full bodied with medium tannins plus and medium acids.  Notes of graphite and licorice play into roasted nuts and mocha.  The finish offers plenty of oak, which helps tame the vivacious tannins.  This wine is a beauty to behold.  Enjoy!

Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc 2011

Pessac Leognan, France

Cash Price $47.49

Chateau Carbonnieux is one of my favorite white wine producers in the world and this vintage is absolutely stellar.  The Chateau has history dating back to the 12th century which makes it one of the most historic estates in all of Bordeaux.  The wine is Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon based from 30-60 year old vines.  It is 100% barrel fermented and yet does not carry much oak on the palate.  Flavors of grapefruit, cactus, and green apples are encompassed by zesty acids that are slightly tamed by the round mouth feel with barrel aging.  Notes of wild white flowers sing through the mid palate with touches of white peach and citrus lemon peel.  The finish offers crushed rocks and just a kiss of oak with hints of pear and honey dew.  This wine has excellent potential for aging, but is also drinking quite well right now!

Blue Rock ‘Baby Blue’ Red Blend 2012

Alexander Valley, California

Cash Price $25.99

Blue Rock winery has gained a reputation for producing silky smooth reds from their 100 acre estate in the famed AVA of Alexander Valley.  The 2012 vintage was a dream come true for vintners in California.  The previous vintage was a disaster, but this one exceeded expectations and has been regarded as one of the best in recent history.  This Cabernet based blend is dangerously approachable from the pop of the cork.  Flavors of blueberry, boysenberry and red currant explode on the palate with a core of milk chocolate.  The tannins are elegant and integrated with easy acids that play into the gracious amount of fruit.  Notes of toasted oak and vanilla sink into hints of violet and granola.  The finish is soft and plush with a plethora of fruit and oak.  By the way, this winery is next door to Silver Oak!

Summers Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Knights Valley, California

Cash Price $32.99 But

Only $29.99 with your Spec’s Key through the end of the year

Knights Valley is the warmest part of Sonoma and is a perfect climate for producing high quality Cabernet Sauvignon.  Summers produces several Cabernets throughout Napa and Sonoma that are all very well made, but I have found this 2012 Knights Valley version to be the best of them all.  This wine is exquisite from the pop of the cork.  Lush, yet structured flavors of black cherry and currant flow seamlessly through the palate with silky, integrated tannins.  The mid palate is rich and plush with a textured and round mouth feel.  Notes of sweet dark berries move through milk chocolate, cinnamon, and creamy vanilla beans.  The finish is opulent and long lasting with hints of toasted oak and cigar box.  This is a Cabernet lover’s Cab!

Ampelos Pinot Noir 2013

Sta. Rita Hills, California

Cash Price $23.99

Ampelos quality comes from the amazing care that is given to the vines.  Starting with the proper care of the soil, which leads to strong vines that work hard and struggle beautifully, which leads to amazingly concentrated grapes.  One would think that is all that needs to be done, but Peter and Rebecca Work’s team strive to create elegant and structured wines that reflect the gorgeous Sta. Rita Hills AVA.  They backed up their tireless ethics to conserve and better the earth by becoming Certified Sustainable In Practice, Certified Biodynamic, and also USDA Organic Certified.  Ampelos is about as ‘GREEN’ as they come!  This puts them on the upper echelon of quality wines….and a quiet gem to be sought out!  Ampelos is situated near the Highly Esteemed Sea Smoke Vineyards at which Peter’s son, Don, is the current wine-maker.  Kris Curran (former Sea Smoke wine-maker) was a consulting wine-maker with Ampelos.  So, these guys have some history with making some of the best Pinot Noir in the world!  Ampelos has been one of my favorite California producers for many years.  The grapes were hand harvested and allowed to start a natural fermentation.  The wine is un-fined, unfiltered, and 100%  Pinot Noir.  Flavors of dark cherries and raspberry sing into a rich cola and brown molasses core.  Notes of wild red berries meld  with medium acids and minimal tannins.  The finish offers hints of Asian spice and Moreno cherries with a touch of butterscotch and vanilla from French oak aging.  Rock Solid Wine!

Waterford ‘Kevin Arnold’ Shiraz 2009

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Cash Price $29.99

I recently poured this at a tasting and absolutely stunned the people.  They couldn’t believe how good this South African wine tasted.  I find South Africa to be a hidden gem in the wine world.  Their wines typically offer an abundance of fruit, yet give true essence of terroir.  This wine offers immense fruit from the start.  Powerful flavors of red currants and red cherries enrich the palate with stewed fruits.  The mid palate is seamless with integrated tannins and acids that play into notes of savory meat and garrigue.  The finish is full bodied with 26 months of French oak aging that show hints of sage, clove and cedar with just a dollop of vanilla.  Impressive!

Vassal de Mercues Malbec 2011

Cahors, France

Cash Price $11.99

Vassal is the 2nd label of Chateau de Mercues and is owned by highly touted producer Georges Vigouroux in the birth place of Malbec, which is Cahors, France. This wine is meant to be drunk early and often!  Almost neon in color, Vassal offers flavors of dense plum and currant that seep through the palate with medium tannins and acids.  The mid palate is well structured and offers notes of red cherry and hints of cranberry with a creamy texture.  The finish is filled with spices of black pepper, cinnamon and cardamom.  I think this wine has more character than most of the Argentinian  offerings.  Fall in love with French Malbec!

JAMES BARLOW’S ‘TOP PICK’ OF 2014

Roblet Monnot ‘St. Francois’ Pinot Noir 2011

Volnay, France

Cash Price $56.99

Pascal Monnot can trace his roots in Volnay back to the 1600’s.  He produces very low yield, but extremely high quality wines from only 6 hectares in the small commune of Volnay in the Cote de Beaune.  He has held the reins to the domaine since 1990.  He implements bio-dynamic practices, even going so far as to use horses to plow the vineyards.  The perfumed and expressive wines of this small town have been enjoyed by kings for centuries.  The St. Francois is blended from several vineyards with some coming from the premier cru sites of Robardelle and Mitans.  Pascal tends the vineyards mostly by himself so one can taste his meticulous nature of farming in his wines.  I tried this particular wine early this year and it inspired me to expand my Burgundy portfolio ten fold.  It was THAT GOOD!  Monnot’s 100% Pinot Noir is de-stemmed prior to fermentation and aged for twenty four month in French oak.  Vibrant flavors of ripe red cherries and cranberry flow through soft, silky tannins and vivacious acids.  The mid palate offers a core of creamy vanilla bean encompassed by framboise, red berries and infused with cola.  The finish gives notes of toasted oak, hazelnuts, and light baking spices.  Monnot’s wines are precise, yet give elegance and finesse of stunning quality.
