James Barlow’s ‘The Thirteen’ Picks of September 2013

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,The summer season is thankfully coming to a close.  The heat is still blazing full, so I will give you a medley of wines that will transition us all from the crazy heat into the smooth, blissful fall season.  I have had the pleasure of trying several inexpensive Spanish wines that blew my palate away for the money.  I am pleased to offer you all these wines and highly recommend trying them for your daily treats.  Enjoy!

Phillipe Melka ‘CJ’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Napa Valley, California
Cash Price $46.89

Phillipe Melka is considered one of the best wine makers in the world.  This quiet man has built a huge cult following for his wines that have consistently scored 100 points on many wine panels.  This ridiculously appealing wine offers delicious notes of black currant and black cherry that sinew deftly into notes of tobacco leaves and hints of cigar box.  Voluptuous notes of plum and blackberry sink easily through the silky, mouth-watering tannins that soften into gorgeous hints of ripe red flowers and tinges of smoked coffee beans and milk chocolate.  The finish is wonderfully long and fulfilling with an abundance of French oak and tidbits of toasted toffee and graham cracker.  Robert Parker gave this wine 91 Points, but I would actually rate it closer to the 94 point range!

Chateau Tour Sieujean Red Blend 2009
Bordeaux, France
Cash Price $31.99

This Cabernet Based red is exquisite!  Paulliac is known for producing some of the highest quality Grand Cru Classe wines in all of Bordeaux.  This little gem is a steal that is surrounded by some of the best vineyards in all of Bordeaux.  The winery doesn’t have the name recognition, so it cannot command the crazy high prices, but continues to show amazing quality for what is in the bottle.  The commune of St. Laurent holds some of the best vineyard sites on earth and this winery is staked right in the middle of it all.  Sieujean exudes dark fruits of black berry and currant that fill the mouth with ripe, tasty tannins that reach easily into juicy nuances of bramble and black cherry.  The mid palate is focused with notes of leather and graphite that give way to pin point precise acids.  The finish offers smidgeons of potpourri that dance through powerful flavors of cedar, dusted earth, and tobacco leaf.  This Robust blend is a pleasure on the palate and will only get better with age!  WOW!

Zind Humbrecht Riesling 2011
Alsace, France
Cash Price $24.99

I recently taught a class on Riesling, which is one of my favorite varietals on Earth.  The grape is amazingly versatile and can be bone dry or cloyingly sweet.  I love that Riesling can pair with almost any dish accordingly.  This Riesling is quite dry and deliciously full bodied.  Alsace is one of the warmest regions in all of France and produce Riesling with rich, voluptuous fruits and wonderfully fresh acids.  This wine exudes huge fruits of apricot and tangerine that play into candied red apples and mandarin orange.  Zind is an exotic beauty that offers fresh, zingy acids that race through a delightful minerality of crushed rocks and limestone.  The finish offers notes of fresh wild meadow flowers and a soft roundness that sits on a peach sorbet for a wonderfully long time.  This is an absolute treat that will easily change your mind to the beauty of Riesling.  Wine Spectator gave this wine 90 Points!

Giovanni Rosso Barbera D’Alba 2011
Piedmonte, Italy
Cash Price 21.84

Barbera is the perfect summer red.  It is a grape with minimal tannins and zesty acids that refresh the palate and keep it yearning for another sup.  The wine offers vibrant red cherries and red plum that sink into notes of sage and minerals.  Smidgeons of red flowers and cranberry fall  into fresh acids that sing into a beautifully balanced core.  The finish gives hints of vanilla with soft, velvet tannins that are perfect for a person that enjoys a red wine in this crazy summer heat.  This is a can’t miss summer red!

Sierra Madre Chardonnay 2010
Santa Maria Valley, California
Cash Price $23.99

This luscious white is produced by the famed wine maker Lane Tanner.  The vineyard is considered one of the most prized sites in all of the central coast due to its wonderful terroir and awesome climate. This succulent white gives bright citrus notes on the palate that slowly sings into vanilla and quince.  The mid palate offers flavors of lemon meringue and pear that soften into hints of caramel and candied pineapple.  The finish is eloquent and flavorful that bring all the delicious fruits into focus with a roundness of French oak aging.  Sierra Madre is one of the best Chardonnay’s that California can offer!

Chateau Ampelia Red Blend 2007
Cotes de Castillon, France
Cash Price 17.59

This 95% Merlot based blend is a true gem!  Ampelia is located on a clay-limestone hillside on the Cotes de Castillon, which borders the famed appellation of Saint Emilion.  The wine was given 5% Cabernet Franc to give it more robust body and structure.  This wine is completely organic  and drinking beautifully right now.  Flavors of blackberry and boysenberry play into vibrant acids that sink into softening tannins.  Notes of graphite and leather give wonderful nuances to the finish that is filled with clove and spice with hints of cedar and vanilla.  Ampelia is drinking perfectly right now.  Enjoy!

Fin Del Mundo Viognier 2012
Patagonia, Argentina
Cash Price $17.99

Viognier is an gorgeous white varietal that no one talks about.  It offers delicious tropical stone fruits with smooth easy acids and typically no oak.  This winery is one of best in Argentina that few know about.  Mundo is a 100% Viognier that offer bursting fruits of rich apricot and tangerine that flow into amazingly fresh notes of papaya and guava.  The wine is fermented in stainless steel vats that keeps freshness and allows the varietal to speak soulfully into the palate and finish with cleansing acids and notes of freshly picked oranges and pineapple.  Mundo is the perfect summer pair for any light cuisine that involves seafood or light fowl.

Villamont ‘Prestige’ Chardonnay 2010
Burgundy, France
Cash Price $14.19

Villamont  is a winery based in the heart of Savigny les Beaune in Burgundy.  They produce iconic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  This entry level white is a great way to ‘get your feet wet’ with Chardonnay from Burgundy.  Many American consumers are still fearful of steering away from the comforts of California Chardonnay, but are becoming bored with the same stylistic wine that is offered.  I submit that you should dip your taste buds into some of the best Chardonnay in the world.  Burgundy offers consummate Chardonnay with class and sophistication and now at an affordable price point.  This wine exudes bursting fruits of apple and meyer lemon that dance easily into tropical stone fruits.  Fruits of pineapple and mango play smoothly into easy, succulent acids and hints of vanilla and toasted oak.  Great Chardonnay for the Money!
Domaine La Suffrene Red Blend 2011
Vin De Pays, France
Cash Price $12.99I have come to really appreciate the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre blends from the South of France since I visited the region last year.  The growers put their heart and soul into the production of their grapes.  The Suffrene Estate is located in the region of Bandol which prides itself on the ancient Mourvedre.  They use large oak Foudres that have been well used, so the typically oaky flavors are not imparted into the wine. This dynamic red is a blend of predominantly Mourvedre with Grenache and Syrah. Flavors of dark black currant and blackberry smash into robust tannins and acids which give way to notes of smoked leather and game.  Hints of cracked black pepper and roasted meat sinew throughout the smooth, velvety finish.  This is a killer food wine at a great Bargain price!

Zingari Rosso blend 2009
Tuscany, Italy
Cash Price $14.99

I Love a good Tuscan Blend.  I find that the Italians can produce some of the best blends in the world from this region.  This blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot is wonderfully crafted.  The wine was aged in large neutral oak barrels, so it does not impart oak on the palate which allows the fruits to take center stage.  Zingari offers robust fruits of blackberry and black cherry with tinges of sage and truffle.  The mid palate give way to plum and currant with just a tinge of black pepper and mocha.  The finish is beautifully long and leaves the palate begging for another sip.  Pair this delish wine with any red pasta based dish.

Marques De La Concordia Crianza 2009
Rioja, Spain
Cash Price $10.99Concordia is a ridiculously great quality wine for the price, so I feel compelled to let you all know about the new vintage that arrived this year. As most of you know, I love New World fruit infusion combined with Old World terrior mentality, and this wine hits the nail on the head. Marques is 100% Tempranillo and aged in French and American oak for 18 months. Flavors of ripe strawberry and red cherries sink into the palate with easy flavors of rich blackberry and vanilla. Soft spices zing throughout the light oak with undertones of dark truffles on the finish. This wine is made for big hearty meat dishes.  This wine is the steal of the year!

Cune Blance White 2011
Rioja, Spain
Cash Price $9.99

I opened Cune Blanco’s new vintage this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the quality that I found in my glass.  I really enjoy Spanish whites, but usually find myself opening Albarino from the Basque region.  Viura is the main White varietal of Rioja.  It is an unctuous grape that has a similar flavor profile to Sauvignon Blanc, but without the overpowering acids.  This wine offers tropical fruits of melon and baked green apples that play into soft, eloquent acids that are unencumbered by the headiness of oak aging.  Tinges of peach tickle the outer taste buds and finish with a slew of white flowers.  This wine will be a great way to end the final dog days of summer!

Muga Rosado 2011
Rioja, Spain
Cash Price $9.99Muga is considered one of the finest wineries in all of Rioja.  The region isn’t necessarily known for Rose, but as you all know, I am constantly seeking out fun, geeky wines from all over the world at great prices.  This deliciously dry Rose is a blend of Garnacha, Viura, and just a smidgeon of Tempranillo.  Fresh fruits of red cherries and red apple tingle through clean acids and minimal tannins.  Notes of baked pastry round into a nicely textured finish that has just a hint of tartness to give the wine a cherry strudel-esque feel.  Quite a yummy Rose!

Chateau Lanessan Red Blend 2000
Bordeaux, France
Cash Price $31.29

The 2000 Vintage was slated as the best vintage of the 21st century in Bordeaux.  The region had a picture perfect growing season which led to amazing quality and abundant harvests.  This Haut Medoc wine is drinking perfectly right now.  Lanessan is adjacent to the 4th growth of Chateau Beychevelle but at a fraction of the cost.  This Cabernet forward wine is drinking gorgeously right now!  Flavors of soft roasted plum and black currant fall into silky notes of chocolate mocha and sandalwood.  The tannins and acids have softened out perfectly to give this wine a classic Bordeaux feel but with a voluptuous amount of fruits and flavors.  Buy this diamond now and impress all your friends!  Only 4 cases available.

Andre Clouet ‘Grand Reserve’ Brut N/V
Champagne, France
Cash Price $37.99

Clouet Grand Reserve brut was offered last year at $45.99, but we drove a hard bargain and are able to offer you this GRAND CRU Champagne from the region of Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims at an amazing price.  Most big name producers (I.E. Veuve Clicquot, Moet Chandon) are not Grand Cru Quality Champagne. This Pinot Noir heavy Champagne is absolutely to die for.  Flavors of red berries and wild red cherries play into an eloquent backbone of limestone minerality.  Notes of fresh lilacs and graham cracker linger into a rich outer crust of crème brulee and toasted hazelnut.  Candied strawberry licks the palate and finishes with tinges of creamy toast and just a smidgeon of rose petals.  This is a WOW Champagne.  Wine Spectator gave this wine 90 Points!

Etoilles De Salles Merlot 2010
Pomerol,France
Cash Price $22.99

The region of Pomerol makes the best Merlot on Earth.  The best wines of Pomerol cost upwards of $2,000 per bottle.  Lalande is a sub region that produces awesome quality at a fraction of the cost.  The 2010 harvest is considered a vintage of the ages in Bordeaux.  It was a perfect harvest that allowed the grapes to reach ripeness of California proportions.  This delightful buy offers rich, ripe fruits of blackberry and currant that lead into notes of sandalwood and cigar box.  Notes of pyrazine and tobacco flow into bits of black pepper and bell pepper.  The finish gives loads of vanilla and potpourri that lay into a bed of floral tones and mint.  This is a true expression of Merlot that will blow your mind! A Must Try!

Pierre Archambault Pouilly Fume 2011
Loire Valley, France
Cash Price $18.99

Pouilly Fume is synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc.  It is one of the purest expressions of the grape known to man.  The Loire Valley produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc and is largely unknown due to the popularity of New Zealand.  Archambault offers decisive flavors of zesty lemon lime with wonderfully linear acids.  Notes of wet stone minerality seep into the core of the wine with hints of flint and smoke.  The finish gives bits of melon and green apple that play into grapefruit and spiced pear.  The wine is dry, expressive, and taylor made for this crazy summer heat!

Copain ‘Tous Ensemble’ Chardonnay 2010
Anderson Valley, California
Cash Price $23.99

I love that California has decided to allow Chardonnay to begin to express its true potential.  Typically, California Chardonnay is known for throwing in copious amounts of oak and cream that mask the true flavors that the region has to offer.  Wine makers are now showing the grape for its true glory and allow its deliciously full flavors to reach the forefront.  This dynamic wine offers glorious fruits of ripe pear and fresh apples that lead into notes of nectarine and orange blossom.  Crisp acids play through the backbone with smidgeons of tropical fruits and hints of honey that lick the palate with just a kiss of toasted oak.  The amazing fruits that encompass this wine make it well worth the price of admission!

99 West Pinot Noir 2010
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Cash Price $15.79

This Spec’s exclusive is a home run!  The Willamette Valley offer wines with the panache of California, but the complexity of Burgundy.  The region has longer amount of daylight that allow the grapes to reach full maturity, but still has the cooler temperatures which let the grapes retain the proper acidity to make the perfect Pinot Noir.  It is hard to find great Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley for under $20.  When I do, I feel compelled to let you all in on the secret!  Flavors of eloquent red cherry tickle into raspberry and just a smidgeon of pomegranate.  Notes of wild flowers play into hints of black pepper and potpourri with easy acids that sink into a smooth, playful finish.  An Awesome Value Pinot!

Neal Family Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Napa Valley, California
Cash Price $16.89

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the foothills of Howell Mountain is spectacular!  The wine is organically farmed which offers you the truest expression of the grape.  Neal Family Blanc is completely un-oaked and offers ripe flavors of citrus and stone fruits that play into zesty acids that are softened by the sur lie aging that gives it a supple roundness.  Notes of guava and pineapple sink into a clean, refreshing finish that offers hints of white flower and just a touch of creamy complexity.  This is an Outstanding White that will WOW your palate!

Domaine de Malaveille Charmille Rose 2012
Languedoc, France
Cash Price $13.49

This winery prides itself on its ability to produce excellent wines from organically grown grapes.  This fresh Rose is an homage to the beauty that the land can give its people.  Flavors of ripe bing cherry and citrus cling to fresh acids.  Slight hints of garrigue play into notes of cranberry and ripe, tart strawberry.  The great part of this wine is that it gives you all the characteristics of a flavorful red wine without all the robust tannins and yet retains lively acids to give a succulent mouth feel that will refresh your palate time and time again!

Acquaguista Red Blend 2009
Tuscany, Italy
Cash Price $14.99

This wine has been one of the top sellers in the entire Spec’s chain for two years running.  It is easily one of the more flavorful wines offered in our Italian portfolio.  It is a blend of almost equal parts Cabernet, Syrah, and Merlot. Fresh and vibrant, it is a blend that will be a perfect compliment to any summer occasion!  Delightful fruits of raspberry and strawberry sink into a lush notes of blueberry and bramble.  The mid palate has flavors of juicy fruits that radiate into bits of  grilled meat which meld into a cherry chocolate core which provides an exquisite mouth feel.  It is a perfectly proportioned medium bodied red that is built for the hot Texas heat.  Acquagiusta receives great ratings from the big boys on a yearly basis and I think this one will be quite comparable or even exceed it.

Domaine Princemelle 1694 Red Blend 2009
Rhone Valley, France
Cash Price $10.39

Princemelle is from Southern Rhone in the tiny town of St. Gervais which is known for producing higher quality than your every day Cotes Du Rhone.  I visited this quaint area last year and met with the growers of this delicious wine.  I was amazed at the care and precision put into producing the best quality grapes from the vine to the bottle.  This Grenache and Syrah blend is quite versatile.  Flavors of ripe blackberry and black cherry sink into the palate with tinges of roasted game and black pepper.  The mid palate is silky smooth with notes of wild berries and stewed fruits that lead into soft notes of garrigue.  The finish is long and tasty with bits of tar and coffee bean.  This wine completely over excels for the money.  Its a Great Everyday Treat!

Protea Chenin Blanc by Anthonij Rupert 2011
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Cash Price $9.09

Chenin Blanc is a deliciously versatile grape.  In fact, it is easily one of my favorite white varietals.  It exudes ripe fruits with great acids and sometimes just a hint of sweetness which makes it a perfectly versatile food wine.  I visited this winery a couple of years ago and was amazingly impressed with their entire portfolio.  Chenin blanc is also called ‘Steen’ in South Africa.  This wine exudes an amazing array of flavors.  Ripe fruits of orange blossom and apricot explode on the palate with fresh chunks of papaya and peach seeping into the core with notes of freshly cut grass.  Crisp acids balance the wine and it finishes with supple and soft licks of honey dew, peach and beeswax.  Fresh and Exuberant!

Gourmandise Syrah 2010
Vin de Pays d’Oc, France
Cash Price $9.49

Anytime I am on the hunt for a bargain, I typically end up in the South of France.  The wines from the Languedoc-Roussillion are the best value in the world in my opinion.  This tasty treat gives homage to the American palate and offers a fresh, exuberant wine with loads of fruits and oak.  Flavors of black cherry and black currant dance easily through soft acids and silky tannins that lead into a rich, voluptuous vanilla bean core.  The finish is long and integrated with smidgeons of cedar and spice.  Gourmandise is a nice compliment to any meaty dish or can easily stand alone as a great value drinker.

James Barlow’s ‘The Thirteen’ Picks of July 2013

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Happy 4th of July everyone!  The boiling summer heat is in full swing this year.  The scorching weather gives us reasons to search out lighter wines, whether it be red or white, that will give us some relief.  This month I have chosen a slew of delightfully refreshing wines that will quench your summer thirst for vino.  This eclectic mix of wines will be surefire hit for your table or any summer party.  Enjoy!  I am teaching a class at Crescent Moon Wine Bar on Wednesday, July 24th from 7-10pm titled ‘Dry Rose, The Perfect Summer Wine’.  Space is limited.  RSVP to 281-364-9463.  See you there!

Poggio Antico Rosso di Montalcino 2009
Tuscany, Italy
Cash Price $34.89

I poured this delicious gem at my last class and it was a huge success.  Poggio Antico does not have any Rosso di Montalcino vineyards, so they delimit some of their Brunello wines to produce this dynamic wine.  In effect, you are drinking ‘baby Brunello’ every time you pop the cork on this wine.  The biggest difference is aging.  Brunello must be aged for five years before it is released while the Rosso must only be aged for one year upon its release.  Sangiovese is the driving force of this wine.  Italy has had several outstanding vintages in a row due to the warmer weather which allows Sangiovese to become a lush, supple wine with plenty of fruit and complexity.  Antico offers bursting flavors of red cherries and raspberry that dance playfully on the palate with tinges of bruised tomato and light herbs of sage and thyme.  Notes of French oak and vanilla are prevalent on the long, tantalizing finish that lingers for a rich, voluptuous mouth feel.  This wine is a classic in the making from a truly classic producer.

Summers Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Knights Valley, California
Cash Price $32.99

Knights Valley is an AVA in Sonoma that is known for producing some of the regions best Cabernet.  It is one of the hotter regions in Sonoma which makes it ideal for ripening the thick skinned Cabernet Sauvignon.  Massive flavors of blackberry and black cherry sink into the core of amazingly structured wine.  The tannins are beautifully integrated and the acids meld easily into the delicious fruits.  Notes of allspice and cinnamon reach into the palate and give excellent depth on a finish that offers smidgeons of clove, vanilla, and mocha.  This is a can’t miss Cabernet!

Mulderbosch Chardonnay 2011
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Cash Price $18.99
This Chardonnay has a unique appeal.  It has the minerality and acidity of Burgundy, but is able to combine it with ripe tropical fruits that are surrounded by licks of oak.  Mulderbosch is all about balance in this wine.  Flavors of ripe apricot meddle into quince and green apple.  Notes of melon and guava tickle the mid palate and slowly sinew into rich roundness of toasted almonds and sauteed butter.  The acidity is able to carry this Chardonnay and keep it from falling flat.  The end result is a gorgeously balanced wine has layers of fruit that lay on a depth of complex secondary flavors.  A Must Try for all of the True Chardonnay Lovers!

Chateau La Tour L’Aspic Red Blend 2008
Pauillac, France
Cash Price $27.99

I often find that great value in the second label offering of the Grand Cru Classe Chateau’s.  This eponymous wine is the second label of the Fifth Growth Chateau Haut Batailley.  This impressive estate is run by the famed Borie Family that produces some of the world’s best wines. L’Aspic is a Cabernet, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc blend from a region inside Bordeaux that is known for producing massively structured wines.  Intense flavors of black currant and blackberry sinew deftly into rustic, yet vibrant tannins.  Notes of dusted earth and vanilla bean combine into a smooth, complex mouth feel.  It is a wine of divine elegance with a finish that leaves the palate entranced until the next sup.  This wine is drinking gorgeously now, but will only get better with some age.

Tobias Chardonnay 2010
North Coast, California
Cash Price $14.99

Producers of California Chardonnay are slowly, but surely changing the way they make this versatile varietal.  Gone are they days of heavy handed oak and 100% malolactic fermentation that make fat, flabby wines without structure or acidity.  Wine makers are now toning back the oak and cream and allowing the varietal to show its delicious fruit and character.  This style of Chardonnay is quickly becoming the norm for production of this varietal.  Tobias ages this 100% Chardonnay for 12 months in new and used French oak barrels and only allows 30% malolactic fermentation.  This gives the wine just a kiss of oak characteristics and just a whiff of butter and nuts throughout the palate.  Delicious flavors of ripe green apple and pineapple dance delightfully into notes of melon and toasted coconut.  The wine has mouth watering acidity that clings easily on the ripe fruits.  What a Well Balanced White!

Gran Viu Red Blend 2007
Carinena, Spain
Cash Price $24.89

I have written up this wine in past vintages and recently tasted the new release.  I was astounded at the quality that encompassed my palate.  This Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Blend exudes flavors of stewed red fruits and ripe cherry that lead into a charred mocha and toasted oak.  The tannins are well integrated with easy, supple acids that quench the palate.  The finish gives notes of black pepper, sage, and black slate.  Gran Viu would pair perfectly with a hearty pork loin smothered in brown gravy and mushrooms.  Great Dinner Red!

Block 303 Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Rutherford Valley, California
Cash Price $19.94

Most of you know the amazing quality that the Block Series has produced over the years.  These wines have become iconic for offering great quality wines under $20.  The Rutherford Valley has become renowned for growing terroir-driven Cabernet that has a distinct ‘Rutherford Dust’ flavor in the wines produced from this region.  Block 303 is brilliantly concentrated with divine flavors of blackberry, cassis and black raspberry that reach into voluptuous tannins which envelope the palate with hints of dusty, alluvial soil.  Notes of rich mocha chocolate and vanilla fall into ripe acids that give depth and complexity to the mouth feel.  The finish is long and tantalizing with smooth notes of clove and cedar that linger on the palate for a wonderfully long time.  Don’t miss out on this cult classic Cabernet!

Commanderie Bargemone Rose 2012
Provence, France
Cash Price $14.29

Rose is a classic wine for hot weather.  Provence is right on the Mediterranean coast, which is a hotbed for Rose because of the sweltering hot summer heat.  It is amazingly versatile and pairs quite well with lighter foods. Provence produces the best Rose in the world. It is a region in southern France that has made its livelihood off of this eloquent blush for centuries. They produce a dry style of Rose without much or any residual sugar, so you get pure and clean fruits without the sweetness. This winery was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century.  Bargemone is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet that offers flavors of wild strawberries and vibrant red cherries.  Succulent acids race through the core of this wine with smidgeons of meadow flowers and red berries.  The finish is clean and with a lip smacking appeal that keeps the palate begging for more.  Dry Rose is the PERFECT compliment to the Hot Houston Heat!

Cacciagrande Cortiglione Syrah/Petite Verdot Blend 2010
Tuscany, Italy
Cash Price $16.79

Tuscan blends from the IGT delimitation are typically whacky blends from International varietals instead of indigenous grapes.  This Syrah blend is booming with flavor from start to finish.  Big Fruits of red currant and red berries zing on the palate with zesty acids that seep through the core of the wine.  Notes of black pepper and roasted meats are prevalent on the mid palate.  The finish softens into a creamy dream with hints of vanilla bean and kitchen spices.  Cortiglione is a great BBQ wine!

Butera Insolia 2011
Sicily, Italy
Cash Price $12.99

This 100% indigenous varietal is great poolside wine.  It offers harmonious flavors of nectarine and lemon lime zest that sing into soft notes of almond and jasmine.  Insolia has a wonderful floral aromatic profile that gives notes of gardenia, peach, and melon.  The finish is clean and pure with just a slight candied texture.  This wine does not touch oak and is a pure expression of a wonderful varietal that is rarely supped.  Try this delicious wine that is outside the box of the normal white wine varietals and shows amazing character!

Leonce Bocquet Pinot Noir 2011
Burgundy, France
Cash Price $13.99

You all know that I am constantly on the hunt for Pinot Bargains!  I have found that the Bocquet portfolio typically overachieves for the money.  This daily PInot is awesome!  Flavors of bing cherry and raspberry lay on a bed of red roses.  Brilliant acids refresh the palate and lead into tinges of cola and cranberry.  The tannins are minimal and integrate nicely into the background.  The finish is supple and smooth with just a kiss of oak that lingers on the palate for a wonderfully long time.  Great Value!

Grand Bateau Blanc 2011
Bordeaux, France
Cash Price $10.99

This wine is a new project from the famed Fourth Growth Estate of Beychevelle in Saint Julien.  The wine comes from Entre-Deux-Mers and is a 80% Sauvignon Blanc/20% Semillion Blend.  The wine is aged in French oak barrels which gives it a unique difference from the typical Sauvignon’s from around the world.  Flavors of green apple and kiwi give way to a supple, rounded mouth feel with smidgeons of grapefruit and citrus lemon peel.  Hints of toasted vanilla play into clean acids and a superb minerality with brilliant focus.  Bateau Blanc is definitely a WOW! white from an amazing producer.

Ashwood Grove Cabernet 2009
Victoria, Australia
Cash Price $7.99

Australia has become synonymous with good, inexpensive wines that are quaffable to almost any palate.  This approachable Cabernet exudes flavors of blackberry and black cherry with smooth, easy tannins that integrate easily into the un oaked finish.  Great daily red!
